Racing Against Time, Part V

Dear Friends,

I find it interesting that a number of bloggers are wondering about my health or are wondering why death seems to be in the back of my mind.  First of all, I am perfectly healthy.  However, when I was thinking of getting life insurance during this past legislative session, a nurse came over to my office to take some tests right after I had to painfully say “no” to a senator who wanted a bill that had some legal concerns.  Stress can cause a lot of problems.  My blood pressure was high on the first try.  After about ten minutes,  it went down to an average reading.  Then after about another 10 minutes, my blood pressure was much better than the average person.  I have always been a very determined person in goals I really believed in.  However, determination and work needs to be balanced by eating healthy, exercise, and mental relaxation such as meditation, or we can get a heart attack or stroke.  Living unhealthy and/or stress can cause future problems.  Not only must we work hard and do all we can before we die, we must enjoy life and live healthy.  I had one unusual early morning shortness of breath and one early morning pain in my chest this Spring.  That could very well be caused by stress.  Although a number of people believe it was one of those spiritual attacks against me because I am healthy and regularly exercise.

On January 6, 2009, I wrote: “Let’s do all we can to keep the balance tipped towards the positive.  We only have a limited time in this world.  We need to be faster than “death.”  We have to say what we need to say and do what we need to do before it catches up with us because sooner or later, it will.  We can only do the best we can before our destiny is revealed to us.”

When I talk about “death,” I am really talking about life.  Knowing that death can happen anytime, sometimes sooner than we want, that makes it all the more important to live life to the fullest now.  My hope is that we all live a long and happy life.  But life is not always like that.  I have seen so many people die way before their time.  I look forward to everyday.  Even in my darkest days, I try to make the most of life.  So many people are sad and depressed or worse, angry, jealous, impatient, and full of hatred.  There are many people who criticize others.  A number of people hide behind code names on their computers and send negative statements on the Internet.  At the extreme, there are those who harm, rape, and kill.  We must always strive to be positive and that will result in a positive affect on others as well as your soul, mind, and body.  Our impermanence is an incentive to live life the best we can.

I am fortunate to be healthy.  I lift weights, walk, and run regularly.  I try to eat healthy.  I pray and meditate occasionally to relax my soul, mind, and body.  My “Peace”  page on this website lists my strategy to attain peace within ourselves to help us to live positively and healthy.

Like you, I am racing against time, the time left in our lives in this physical world.  My “Farewell” page on this website is another way of me being ahead of my death.  I can thank my loved ones and all of you, just in case I don’t have the last opportunity before my death.  Live positively and healthy!

With Warmest Aloha,

Jon Riki Karamatsu

Rep. Jon Riki Karamatsu’s Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Bill Signed Into Law

Honolulu.  A bill replacing and updating the existing uniform management of institutional funds act was signed into law by the governor as Act 135 on June 19, 2009.  Representative Jon Riki Karamatsu (District 41-Waipahu, Village Park, Waikele), House Judiciary chairman, introduced the legislation.

The law provides guidance and authority to charitable organizations concerning management and investment of funds held by those organizations, while also providing additional protections for charities and interests of donors.

“Among other things, this law affords charitable institutions the ability to cope with fluctuations in the value of the endowment, which is an important tool for these organizations to have at their disposal in these uncertain economic times,” explains Karamatsu.

The law takes effect on July 1, 2009.

Michael Jackson

I was shocked to find out Michael Jackson had passed away today.  I grew up with his music.  I believe his “Thriller” album was the second album I ever owned.  I will remember him most for his humanitarian efforts.  His song “You are not alone” fits his sad departure.

Michael Jackson – “You Are Not Alone”

“Black or White” is a fun song with a good meaning in that we as the human race should all live in harmony.

Michael Jackson – “Black or White”

Many of the radio stations were playing Micahael Jackson’s songs.  One of the songs often requested was “Man in the mirror,” a song that encourages us to look at ourselves and change for the better.  We can all play a role in making our world better.  A good song with a good message!

My tank was sitting with just water for several months after my Koi fish died.  On Tuesday, June 15, 2009, I cleaned out my tank and bought 2 Blue Gouramis, 12 Neon Tetras and some plants for my 55 gallon tank.  Since I was a young kid, I have enjoyed raising fish.  It is very relaxing to watch my new fish swim late at night.

Everything felt good within me.

You are still with me.

Disappear

Good song.

Beyonce – “Disappear”

If I begged and if I cried
Would it change the sky tonight?
Will it give me sunlight?
Should I wait for you to call?
Is there any hope at all?
Are you drifting by?

When I think about it
I know that I was never there or even cared
The more I think about it
The less that I was able to share with you
I try to reach you, I can almost feel you
You’re nearly here
And then, you disappear
(Disappear, disappear, disappear)
You disappear
(Disappear, disappear, disappear)

And then I lie all by myself
I see your face, I hear your voice
My heart stays faithful
And time has come and time has passed
If it’s good it’s got to last
It feels so right

When I think about it
I know that I was never there or even cared
The more I think about it
The less that I was able to share with you
I try to reach you, I can almost feel you
You’re nearly here
And then, you disappear
(Disappear, disappear, disappear)
You disappear
(Disappear, disappear, disappear)
You disappear

I missed all the signs
One at a time, you were ready
What did I know starting our lives
Now my love, I’m ready to shine

When I think about it
I know that I was never there or even cared
The more I think about it
The less that I was able to share with you
I try to reach you, I can almost feel you
You’re nearly here
And then, you disappear
You disappear, you disappear
You disappear, you disappear

You disappear

Councilman “Duke” Bainum

On June 9, 2009, Councilman Duke Bainum, 56, died at about 11 p.m. of complications from an aneurysm.  In 2003 Spring,  he visited me at my office with his aide at the time, John White.  I would see him at events throughout the years since.  He was  a gentleman and very ambitious.  Just as he was making a comeback, it was shocking how quickly he passed away.  My heart goes out to his spirit, family, and loved ones.

Philippine Consulate General Independence Day Ball “Freedom Bash 2”

On Friday, June 12, 2009 from 6:00 P.M., I attended the Philippine Consulate General Independence Day Ball “Freedom Bash 2” at Hilton Hawaiian Village’s Tapa Ballroom.

It was also a farewell dinner for Consul General Ariel Y. Abadilla who has been posted in Honolulu since December 2005.  He will be Philippine Ambassador to Ireland.  Senator Clarence Nishihara, Senator Norman Sakamoto, and I made a few speeches and presented a certificate to him on stage.  In my speech, I stated, “One of my favorite memories with Consul General was when we had a strategy session at his house to help the Filipino community.  However, what I will miss the most is seeing his smile at all the events.”

I danced with a friend and even got Sen. Donna Kim to dance with me.

Rep. Jon Riki Karamatsu’s bill on harassment and harassment by stalking through electronic communication became law

Published in the House Blog on Monday, June 8, 2009.

A bill expanding the definition of “harassment” and “harassment by stalking” to include contact through electronic communications was signed into law by the governor as Act 090 on June 5, 2009. Representative Jon Riki Karamatsu (District 41-Waipahu, Village Park, Waikele), House Judiciary chairman, introduced the legislation to increase the protection and safety of Hawaii residents.

The law updates Hawaii’s harassment and stalking laws as text messaging and social media websites such as Facebook, Myspace and Twitter grow exponentially in popularity. While technology continues to change and new forms of electronic communications develop, so has the increase in harassment and harassment by stalking through electronic communications.

“Passage of these bills will update the current statute with all of the existing forms of today’s technology,” explains Karamatsu. “It is important that lawmakers keep current in order to best serve our constituents.” Karamatsu was inspired to introduce this bill after two friends became victims of electronic harassment and did not have any form of legal recourse.

Law enforcement agencies estimate that electronic communications are a factor in 20 to 40 percent of all stalking cases. Forty-six states now have laws that explicitly include electronic forms of communication within stalking or harassment laws.

Happy 86th Birthday Robert Arakaki, President of the 100th Infantry Battalion!

Every Thursday the 100th Infantry Battalion veterans hang out, talk story, eat pupus, and have some beverages, including beer and wine.  I spent many Thursdays with them in 2007.  After my DUI on October 16, 2007, I stopped attending their gatherings because I got really busy with my legislative duties and I was determined to make a political comeback despite knowing that no politician has ever survived such a mistake.  I would see Mr. Arakaki at events and he said to come by and the boys would ask about me.  I saw Mr. Arakaki at the 2009 Lantern Floating and he told me to come, plus it was his birthday.

On May 28, 2009 at about noon I stopped by the 100th Infantry Battalion Clubhouse.  It was so good to see all the veterans: Goro, “China”, Aki, “Stu”, Judge Miho, Kiku (longtime friend of the veterans), and others.  I always get emotional and at times, teary-eyed when I think of the sacrifice they did for us.  I was happy to celebrate Mr. Arakaki’s 86th birthday.  I live because of these heroes.  My heart is filled with so much appreciation and love for them.

House Certificate for Waikele Elementary School Principal Carmielita Minami

2008_5_31 105

On May 20, 2009, I went to Waikele Elementary School and surprised Principal Carmielita Minami becoming the Hawaii’s 2009 Distinguished Principal.  She was announced as Hawaii’s 2009 National Distinguished Principal at an awards luncheon held on May 3, 2009.

Minami was nominated by Pearl City/Waipahu Complex Area Superintendent Keith Hayashi and selected for this prestigious award by a committee of fellow principals and business community representatives through a process conducted by the Hawaii Elementary and Middle School Administrators’ Association.

A veteran educator, Minami has devoted 38 years to Hawaii’s public school system. Her leadership has been instrumental in bringing transformational change to Waikele Elementary where she has served as principal since 2004.

“Research results prove what school communities know from experience that successful schools depend on dedicated instructional leaders,” said Vincent Ferrandino, former executive director of the National Association of Elementary School Principals. “This honor represents our deep appreciation to a few of those who are committed to the academic, social, and emotional development of school children both in our nation and overseas.”

Joining Minami at the celebration were nominees: Carol Petersen, Mililani Mauka Elementary (Central); Lehua Veincent, Keaukaha Elementary (Hawaii); Cindy Giorgis, Hahaione Elementary (Honolulu); Fred Rose, Kilauea Elementary (Kauai); Susan Alivado, Paia Elementary (Maui); and Joyce Bellino, Kapunahala Elementary (Windward).

This fall, she will travel to Washington, D.C., to be honored along with other principals from across the nation during two days of activities and recognition events.

The National Distinguished Principals Program is sponsored by the NAESP in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education and in corporate partnership with AIG VALIC.
