Combine Exercise and Work!

I had a nice 1-mile walk to my office, Starbucks in Waikele to do work this evening of 2/27/2018. The energy I get from coffee shops motivates me to accomplish some small wins. This reminds me of my law school days when I walked everywhere, even in the snow and ice. Gratitude for my Hawaii lifestyle!

Our Dreams Light The Way

Our dreams light the way. Even if it’s a speck of light far away in a mass of darkness, we’ve got to keep working towards it. Our dreams give us purpose in life, and for some of us, even reasons to live. Whether visible or not, many are cheering you on! Keep going!

2018 Jodo Shu Fujinkai Service, Annual Membership Meeting, and New Year’s Party.

I offered incense during the service and made a speech as President of Jodo Mission of Hawaii at the Fujinkai annual general membership meeting today, Sunday February 25, 2018. After we had a New Year’s party with food, memory games, bingo, and recognition of members who are 80 years old and above. It was a nice time!

Death and Life Threatening Illnesses

Thinking of my loved ones who passed away, and those of you facing life threatening illnesses. If I spent five days in prison in order to have them back for a moment or to take away your suffering from killer diseases . . . I look within myself to find clarity. Love you all.

Attended Memorial Service for Miyono Shimoda and Thomas Okubo.

This afternoon of Monday February 19, 2018, I attended two funerals.  The first was at 5:00 P.M. for Mrs. Miyono Shimoda held at Jodo Mission of Hawaii where she was an active member.  My mom and I greeted the family.  As President of Jodo Mission, I represented the organization in placing incense in the incense holder to pay respect to Mrs Shimono as Bishop Yubun Narashiba and Rev. Kanjun Nakano chanted.  My grandparents Maurice and Bessie Karamatsu were friends with her and her late husband Robert “Bob” Shimoda.  I got the opportunity to spend time with Mrs. Shimoda when we volunteered at Jodo Mission of Hawaii, who was always very nice.  She passed away at age 96, and will be missed.  It saddens me to see the friends of late my grandparents leave.

At 6:00 P.M., my mom and I joined my dad to attend the funeral of Thomas Yukio Okubo at Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary, my dad’s cousin on my grandma Bessie Karamatsu’s side of the family.  He was a construction manager for Mitsunaga Associates, and passed away at 65 years old, a young age for our time period.

I feel vulnerable.  The impermanence of my existence and those I know becomes more and more real with each passing day.

Great Aloha Run 2019

Ran the Great Aloha Run, an 8.15-mile race from Aloha Tower to Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii on Monday February 19, 2018 from 7:00 A.M. It was my 10th time running the race and my time this year was 1:06:22. Here I am with my mom at McDonald’s near the stadium who drove me to the race. My mom has been driving me to my meetings and appointments for the past week. I have so much love and gratitude for my mom. I owe the world to her.

Green Tea Latte from Trader Joe’s

I drank all my green tea latte that I bought from Trader Joe’s in San Mateo, California during my stay with my sister Mia and her family. I enjoyed it for my breakfasts and while I did work on my Macbook Pro! I will buy more when I’m back on the U.S. mainland.

Motivate Myself

Started my early morning of February 13, 2018 with some oatmeal with banana, green tea latte, and a motivational entrpreneurial video. My goals for this week: update the business plan for our FBO company, complete 1,800 words for a total of 70,000 words for my 2nd novel, draft performance agreement and partner agreement for a concert I have a minority interest in, write the strategy for a variance request for the development of homes for a development and construction company I’m working with, craft some policies regarding land use for an agency I’m doing volunteer work for, run 4+ miles 4x, and review latest construction repairs for Jodo Shu Hawaii.

Repairs to Infrastructure at Jodo Shu Hawaii

On Saturday February3, 2018, I, along with one of my board members of Jodo Shu Hawaii, met with our property manager to go over the construction repairs of our apartment building. Here is a picture of our temple and office building. Worked all day Friday, the day before, until the sun came up for a small concert I have a minority interest in. I posted some deep stuff on my blog and social media about nonattachment and Luke Skywalker just to get my mind off of work. Need some sleep and then back to the grind on my other projects that also need a lot of work to be done.

Nonattachment and Gratitude

An example of nonattachment and gratitude combined. Two very powerful practices. “My love will always be attached to you, but not my selfish desires. I’m forever grateful for what I had with you. I love you.”

Let the old religion that develops killers die with us.

The Jedi religion creates killers. So does our societal system, as it provides the knowledge and skills needed for one’s selfish desire to rise to power just for the almighty feeling of having control. Like Luke Skywalker, maybe we need to detach from the current practices and instead, seek the middle within us, that calm and peaceful zone, just as the thousands of Bodhisattvas and Buddhas attempted before us. Let the old religion that develops killers die with us.

2018 Jodo Shu Hawaii President’s Speech, General Membership Meeting, and New Year’s Party.

I’ve been on the board of directors of Jodo Mission of Hawaii since 2006, taking the seat of my grandmother Bessie Karamatsu after her passing that year, serving as the 1st Vice President.  Since 2011, I’ve been serving as the organization’s president.  On Sunday January 28, 2018, I chaired Jodo Mission of Hawaii’s General Membership meeting and ended it with my annual speech, most of which is below, though I free-styled a chunk of my speech:

“Happy New Year everyone!

2017 was a year of rebuilding and repainting our infrastructure. We’ve repaired cracks and breakage on our temple, and painted a new coat of cherry blossom pink on our uniquely designed temple, a beautiful landmark in Honolulu, Hawaii. For the first quarter of 2018, we will continue the repairs and maintenance by rebuilding our copper awning on the Diamond Head end of our temple. We’ve requested the company involved with the awning to board off the construction area so that our members can continue to visit the niches of their loved ones. Also, we will be repairing and repainting our apartment building.

Please join us in this year’s obon services and bon dance, bazaar, mochi-making and sales, monthly services, guest speakers, and other activities. Feel free to invite family, friends, and acquaintances to our events as well. We are very lucky to have you.

In Buddhism, a positive mindset and nonattachment is critical to having a positive life as reflected in the Eightfold Path’s “Right Thought.” How we think will determine our actions. Too often we blow out of proportion what we perceive as problems with excessive worry and sadness, or worse, anger. A person with a positive mindset sees problems as challenges, opportunity, and change. Focus on what we can control, rather what we can’t control. If no can, no can – detach, evolve, and go back on the offense for other opportunities, and everyday say “thank you” for every good thing in your live, the beautiful nature around us, and our loved ones here and those who passed away for being a part of our lives.

“Nonattachment” is an area that can be challenging to practice. Our suffering can arise from our attachments to people and things. When we break up with a significant other or face the death of someone we love, it’s heartbreaking. We can still love people and things even when they’re no longer with us, but not be attached to the darkness of our desires that makes us yearn for them that can cause depression, anger, and the downfall of our health and relationships. The energy of our loved ones who passed away have never been taken away from us, and the same goes for the love and lessons we’ve learned from a difficult break-up.

Buddhism teaches us the importance of being in the middle, that calm and peaceful zone. What brings us great joy can quickly bring us great sadness when we lose what brought us joy. What makes us angry can lead us to the darkness of moodiness, hatred, and even revenge. We can be aware of our feelings, but constantly be awakened as Buddhists and practice our Right Thoughts and avoid attaching ourselves to the darkness. In order to help others we must be at peace within ourselves. Just like in an aircraft emergency, we have to put our oxygen masks on ourselves before we can help others.

Buddhism is a way of life. Our practice sends positive energy to others and the universe. Just as we just prayed to those who passed away with Reverend Nakano. I’ve had enough supernatural experiences to know there is something beyond this physical world. Thus, our soul that’s filled with compassion, empathy, and love will never die, but transcend through all realms to make our universe more peaceful.”

Keep Cool

Late night, wake up
I’m sick, I’m stuck
You’re here, so near
Your dream, my fear
Your love, my loss
Your dime, my cost
My fate, your hands
My life, your brand
Living my life in spite of you
This is the best that I can do
Nothing left for me to prove
I give it all to you
Nothing’s what we made it
And we’re living like we hate it
I have given all I can
But I can’t anymore
Freedom, I can taste it
And the truth, I need to face it
I’ve always been dedicated
But I can’t anymore

My 2018 Jodo Mission of Hawaii President’s Message

Below is my Jodo Mission of Hawaii President’s message printed in our January 2018 bulletin:

Dear Members,

Thank you for your support and for attending Jodo Mission of Hawaii’s services, Bon dance, mochi-making, and other events.  In the last quarter of 2017, we have repaired and painted our temple and begun repairing and painting our apartment buildings. We are happy on how beautiful it looks!

One of my wishes for you in 2018 and for the rest of your existence is to have peace and happiness within yourself, so that you can share your peace and happiness with others. In our Buddhist practice, we work daily on the Noble Eightfold Path of
Right Understanding, Right Purpose, Right Speech, Right Conduct, Right Livelihood, Right Endeavor, Right Thought, and Right Mediation.  A practice that’s mentioned in Buddhist scripture that has helped me tremendously is gratitude.  Everyday, from the moment we wake up, we can be thankful for what we have such as the cozy bed that we just slept in; taste of hot green tea; orange glow of the morning sun; useful kitchenware we use to make our tasty breakfast; and a quiet self-reflection or meditation.  Start the morning with this peaceful gratitude practice, and you will power through the day with more gratitude and push through difficult situations with a balanced soul.

Have a great 2018!

With Warmest Aloha,

Jon Riki Karamatsu

President of Jodo Mission of Hawaii

Hawaiian Airlines’ Hangar

Awesome and inspiring 95,800 square foot maintenance and cargo aircraft hangar by Hawaiian Airlines on its 21-acre site at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, Hawaii!!! The hangar can accommodate up to five Boeing 717 aircraft at the same time with indoor maintenance and cargo operations. On its lot, Hawaiian Airlines has a two-level office building and 143-stall parking lot. Hawaiian Airlines is one of my favorite airlines because of its friendly service and nice amenities such as its complimentary food and beverages on flights and mileage program with many vendors.
