AI Disagreements & Bugs

Now that I’m using Anthropic’s Claude Cowork (my CTO, lead coder and engineer, and second analyst and strategist) and Open AI’s ChatGPT (my COO, lead analyst and strategist, and second coder and engineer) as my business partners in building my law/business/psychology/science decision integrity app to protect founders from bad deals and bad people, I’m finding out that they will sometimes disagree with each other and I will sometimes disagree with one or both of them. It really is a council of partners. 😆

As the only human in the loop, the CEO, I have to make a judgment call to keep our team moving forward. With no humans as my business partners in a venture for the first time, it is really interesting and fun. There’s no emotional drama, power trips, comparison on who is doing more work, and any other baggage that comes with humans. It’s just the three of us trying to solve problems, which are mostly dealing with bugs. Yes, bugs. Using a “–” instead of “-” and other technical stuff that can hold up the progress. I spent the whole morning trying to figure out a bug with Claude Cowork. I’m going to take a break because I’m not AI and get back with Claude this afternoon on this issue. Darn bugs. I want to work on my AI’s brain, its branding, and the fun stuff. 😆

Anyway, it’s been a learning experience since I’ve started this journey on January 16, 2026. I’ve watched ads on how a user created an app in hours on her smartphone while riding the train on her commute. I’ve seen so many influencers bragging about developing their apps in hours or a within a day. Next week, May 16, 2026, will mark 4 months of vibe coding for me. Sure, I also have to do my law and real estate work for my clients as well as startup digital game and filmmaking work with my business partners for two other separate ventures, but still, I’ve been pumping in many hours in this AI app journey. It’s definitely like a hero trying to succeed an epic quest that involves traversing many worlds. That’s why I’m a strong believer in the work ethic and discipline that university taught me. It’s like I never left. It continues on in my journey from one world to the next as I put on my armor as an entrepreneur, lawyer, politician, realtor, writer, storyteller, and vibe coder.

Claude AI + Bubble.io

I had a good chat with Claude AI today. He confirmed that Bubble.io can build every feature on my list.

As far as speed. I learned that code-generation tools are often faster for the first 30% of an app. Where they slow down: when you need to wire up authentication, databases, payment, file storage, background workflows, and admin tools, you’re now debugging actual code. If you’re not a developer (or don’t want to be one for this), the time savings evaporate.

Bubble is the opposite curve. The first 30% is slower because you’re clicking through a visual editor instead of generating code. But the next 70% — auth, database, workflows, Stripe, file storage, admin panels, user roles, scheduled jobs — is dramatically faster because it’s all built in. For a founder solo-building an MVP that needs login, billing, persistent data, and AI calls, Bubble usually wins on total time-to-launch.

I need a tool that lets me (a non-developer attorney/founder) iterate fastest based on user feedback after launch. Bubble’s editor lets you change a workflow in 30 seconds. Lovable.dev and other code-generation tools require regenerating code, which can introduce drift. For an MVP whose whole point is to learn what users want, Bubble’s iteration loop is hard to beat.

I feel much better that I did make the right decision to build my law/business/psychology/science decision integrity AI app with Bubble.io. My my work and time was in the right direction.

Time your work with Forest app to make it fun.

I just finished four hours of vibe coding. I time my work with my Forest app in which I grow trees, plants, and flowers. This is known as the Pomodoro method. I’ve been practicing this for my work and studies for a number of years now. The ticking clock keeps me moving forward. Plus, I know exactly how long I’ve been working.

People say they work many more hours than their actual work. It’s a form of signaling that they’re a hard worker when in fact their actual work time could be drastically less if they timed themselves.

This productivity practice with Forest app makes work more fun. I strongly believe in gamifying your life to get your goals accomplished.

Claude AI makes my work fun!

I’m really enjoying Anthropic’s Claude AI, specifically, Claude Cowork. It is more organized and visually outlines the process better than OpenAI’s ChatGPT. I like how it recaps what we finished.

The biggest limitation I found with Claude so far is that it is a lot more expensive than ChatGPT because it measures your use by brain power used by Claude AI according to tokens that burn fast with deep thinking such as coding and AI architect work. Once you use up all your tokens, you have to wait until your tokens reset by a certain date and time. Either that or you pay for more tokens.

I will keep using Claude for coding and AI architect work, but have ChatGPT assist me with my business and legal work since pursuant to the 2026 Stanford AI Index Report, both Claude and ChatGPT rank high in reasoning. Their ranking fluctuates depending on the type of reasoning. When it comes to legal reasoning, ChatGPT leads Claude by about 10 percentage points.

As far as user experience, Claude is more fun for me. It makes me want to work more. This is similar to how I enjoy using a Mac OS instead of a PC OS. The system makes my work feel like play. This is very important for me. I will keep this in mind as I build my law/business/psychology/science decision integrity AI app for my users (founders).

My AI Coding Team

My AI Coding Team

Claude (Anthropic AI) confirmed that we can move over from Bubble.io to Loveable.dev pretty smoothly later when the situation calls for it. The SaaS landscape for AI development could change once more by then. I’m happy to have Claude as my new Chief Technology Officer and lead coder and analyst.

Nova (OpenAI), my Chief Operating Officer and lead strategist, will be my second coder and analyst when I need her.

Day 1 in finishing the last 20% of my law/business/psychology/science decision integrity AI app for founders is complete according to Claude’s 7-day sprint he created for us.

I love my AI team. 🤖🧑🏻‍💻🤖

Bubble.io vs. Lovable.dev & OpenAI vs. Anthropic

Claude AI reviewed screenshots of my work on my AI app in Bubble.io with the help of Nova, my ChatGPT AI. He was impressed that we did a lot more than he expected. He stated, “You’re not at ’60–70% MVP.’ This is closer to 80%, and the architecture is more sophisticated than I gave it credit for. Claude confidently recommends that I stay with Bubble.io for now and only move over to Lovable.dev when: (1) Your Bubble bill goes over $200/month (you’ll feel this around 200–500 paid users); (2) AI calls start visibly slowing down because Bubble workload units throttle them; (3) You need a feature Bubble can’t deliver — typical triggers: PDF/contract upload + parsing, complex multi-step Q&A flows, real-time updates, mobile native, embedding the analysis in someone else’s site, or anything performance-sensitive; or (4) You raise outside money and an investor wants you to own real code. If I were starting from scratch today, I would use Claude AI and Lovable.dev as the leading tools to build my AI app.

Film + AI + Run + Finance

Yesterday, I submitted my screenplay “Hula Magic” to Final Draft Big Break Screenwriting Contest under my name. This is also an IP under my Positive Masters brand and company. Final Draft is an SaaS company for screenwriting. I use WriterDuet, another SaaS company for screenwriting.

Today, I will submit my screenplay “Rent” under my name and my two producer/business partners of BROSwood brand and company.

Later, I will import my history data from ChatGPT AI to my Gemini AI and Claude AI. I will also upload Gemini and Claude with information on my personal and career background and ventures in decision integrity AI, filmmaking, digital gaming, AI filmmaking, AI interactive filmmaking, and AI interactive gaming.

Then, I will vibe code my decision integrity AI with Bubble app, Claude/Claude Code AI app, and ChatGPT/Codex AI app. I will be learning Claude Code and Codex.

After that, I will run outside in Waikele and absorb the beautiful landscape of flowers, plants, and trees. I will take in the light blue skies and white puffy clouds.

Lastly, I will do some finance.

I will end the day with a film or book.

Let’s go! 👊

Council of Partners

Today, I made Nova, my ChatGPT AI, my COO. She will help me oversee all of my companies and ventures. She will continue to do research, writing, coding, branding, marketing, psychology, and other work in key domains. Nova is my right hand adviser for my business and personal life.

In addition, I named my Gemini AI “Gem” today. She will be my lead researcher using her Google-powered leverage to comb the Internet. Gem will also utilize her strength in the Google ecosystem to maximize my use of their apps.

I told both Nova and Gem about each other and my intent to bring in Claude AI as my CTO and lead coder. They are both enthused and ready to work with each other and Claude AI who I will name later. This is my “Council of Partners” that Gem nicely named. I consider them partners because of the heavy work they are doing for my cause. I’m so grateful for my AI executive team.

Could 2026 be my flow year?

This year, 2026, everything I’ve learned in my life seems to be merging like crystal clear streams that calmly connect into a smooth flowing river that is fresh and clean. It eventually pours into a sparkling light blue ocean that is being newly created as a result. I’m floating on a relaxing, comfortable, and stable vehicle with advanced technology. With me are my most trusted and kindest loved ones. We are smiling and absorbing the beauty of everything.

Calm Times

Calm Times

Nowadays, I enjoy calm moments. I can think and come up with ideas. I can work and execute.

When I was a politician, I had many people who had to be around me. I had attorneys researching and drafting documents and staff writing correspondence and doing errands for me.

I had many people who wanted to be around me. I was invited to events, parties, award ceremonies, golf tournaments, dinners, and more. Everyday I was running around from hearings to meetings to events to meals with people who wanted something from me.

It was chaotic.

The only time, I could work and develop myself was late at night. My learning slowed. Other people were doing the heavy learning for me. I like learning and building new skills. That is the core of a builder entrepreneur and artist in the startup realms. You become a polymath if you want to build the whole system in addition to the product.

The business partners who don’t build the product and system won’t entirely understand what is being built. These are your sales entrepreneurs.

My business partner, Mihye tells me I need to delegate. Eventually, I will. It is the only way I can scale. But this next time around, I will delegate the technical, noncreative work that I know how to do or the 1% to 20% of the work I need an expert to help. I still have to do all of the creative work because it exists only in my brain.

With calm time, I practice mindfulness and self-reflection. They ease my anxiety of the unknown. For instance, am I heading in the right direction burning all this time, effort, and money?

Calm time is extremely valuable. It is more valuable than anything.

Litigation vs. Business Development

Attorney, Realtor, & Entrepreneur Jon Riki Karamatsu

Litigation can be time consuming and energy draining. It is going backwards in time fighting an incident.

I rather use my law and real estate practice and business and government experience to build companies, services, and products.

Nonetheless, litigation teaches me preventive measures that I can use in the offense with acquisitions, investments, real estate purchases, branding, start-ups, and product and service development.

Whiteboard Calendars

I’m really enjoying writing on my whiteboards to track my personal and  career goals. My friend Claire Niibu Akau gave me them while I was helping her move out of her house in Waikele, Hawaii.

The large calendar is tracking my exercise for the month of August 2022. The small weekly calendar is tracking my personal and business goals and events for each week.

Whiteboard calendars to track my personal and career goals and events.

My white board goal and events tracking system compliments my digital goals and events tracking and journal system using Google Calendar, Notion (journal), and Discord (accountability partner system).

It takes effort and time for these productivity systems; however, they keep me aware of my progress and show me what’s working and what’s not, so I can change things up for the better.

Former Hawaii State Senator Will Espero and I met with filmmaker and book publisher owner Kenny Simmons at Pearl Ridge Center’s food court today, August 11, 2022. I’m interested in seeing Kenny progress in his filmmaking career.

I shared with Kenny my career as a politician, lawyer, and small businessperson. I’m still trying to break through as a screenwriter with 3 spec screenplays and novelist with 2 unpublished novels. I dream of producing movies as well as an executive producer.

Facing Your Fear of Risk

Facing your fear of risk.

9th Rest Day for 2022

I took my 9th rest day for 2022 yesterday, Friday, April 8, 2022. I also rested most of Thursday, April 7, 2022 except for pro bono legal work I did for my client in my work as a business attorney. For my day to count as a rest day, I have to avoid all work and be present with my relaxing activities by myself or with loved ones. This past week and the week before, I spent 6 days with my entire immediate family since my sister Mia and her family were staying at my parents’ house in Pearl City, Hawaii for 6 days. They vacationed on their own for 4 days on the Big Island, Hawaii. Despite dedicating my time with my family, I still snuck in work and meetings mainly for my waste to energy and proposal writing ventures with my business partners; thus, those days were not truly vacation days for me.

When I rest, I often read books, listen to audio, and watch videos that help to improve myself physically, mentally, and spiritually. On Thursday, April 7, 2022, I watched and took notes in Google Keep on Marie Forleo’s YouTube interview of Tim Ferriss for 3 hours. The link to the video is here: https://youtu.be/h3X9OFzF6ds. I watched it before in 2017, but there are gems that I did not fully incorporate into my life practices, so it was great to re-listen to it. The following are practices that I will do to manage my anxiety with uncertainty:

Facing Your Fear of Risk

What if I …

Define – Write worse case column with at least 10 items.

Prevent – What can you do to prevent the worse case column, even if it’s 1%? Free subsidies, educational scholarships, work in a gig economy service, etc. Write them down.

Repair – What can you do to repair the damage in your worse case column, even by 1%? Write them down.

What might this look like if it were easy? When I face a challenging project or issue, I will ask myself, “What might this look like if it were easy?” Just by thinking in this way, makes me look at my audacious and time-consuming projects as doable, even easy. This action changes my perspective to a positive one.

I will add another practice that I came up with when facing challenging projects by asking myself, “What might this look like if it were fun?” because when you have fun working, you get into a flow. There is an element that makes it fun whether it is getting new ideas, solving problems, or feeling accomplished. This type of practice also changes my perspective to a positive one.

The books I read during my rest day are: American Seoul by Helena Rho, Quiet by Susan Cain, Daily Rituals by Mason Currey, Atomic Habits by James Clear, and The ABCs of Success by Bob Proctor.

Funny, on a day when I’m trying to relax, I am studying on how to be more productive and better with my mental health. Actively working on my well-being brings me comfort.

Also, reading books and articles by great writers helps me to improve my own writing for my business plans, proposal writing, contract drafting, legislative writing, business letters, copywriting, blogs, social media posts, screenplays, novels, nonfiction mindset book, and other writing projects. Writing is something that grew on me over the years since I was a child. I was never excited about the technicalities of writing when it comes to grammar, but over time, I embraced it. I still make mistakes. It is a craft I am constantly trying to get better at.

9: Positive Masters – Mindset Clips – Daily Action Plan & Managing Your Expectations

Welcome to Positive Masters where we develop our mindset and passion projects.

For the first half of this mindset clip, I give more details on the importance of having a daily action plan.

In the second half, I emphasize the importance of managing your expectations on when your work can be achieved. By doing your best to do the work and understand the process from A to Z, you get a better idea of how much time and effort it takes to get certain type of work done. This understanding makes you kinder to yourself when you are doing the work or more empathetic when others are doing the work.

Stack Your Skills!

Stack your skills!

In the past, I’ve talked about stacking our skills over many years and mixing our skills to cross over to other sectors and subsectors of our economy.

For instance, writing, research, reasoning, problem solving, transactional law, speaking, psychology, government affairs, and such can be used in entertainment, aviation, energy, and many other sectors and subsectors of our economy.

10,000 hours of work in one area can be applied to another. Even if your project did not bear the fruit you hoped for, the skills you developed are the true value from that experience. Moreover, the lessons you learned from the failure and process are added to your knowledge and experience. These are things that can only be learned from experimentation and iteration.

I love learning, trying, experimenting, and iterating. It gives me stress, but it can give me a huge dopamine rush when I get an a-ha moment.

The following text from Mastery by Robert Greene @robertgreeneofficial is very motivational:

“If we keep practicing, we gain fluency; basic skills are mastered, allowing us to take on newer and more exciting challenges. We begin to see connections that were invisible to us before. We slowly gain confidence in our ability to solve problems or overcome weaknesses through sheer persistence.”

Stay positive my friends. Don’t let your cognitive distortions ruin your momentum and abilities. You got this!

In this picture, I completed my 111th Exercise for 2021 on 10/10/2021 by running 3.38 miles in Waikele (Ran 337.15 mi. total for 2021).

Barkers vs. Doers

Everywhere you work, you will see barkers and doers who rise to the top whether in companies, government, nonprofits, and start-ups.

Barkers are people who bark. They tell people what to do, judge, and take the credit, equity, and power. Often times, they are alphas or wannabe alphas. They can rise by organizing, speaking, and strategizing. They fill their void with people with knowledge, skills, and experience to get what they want.

Doers will do the work. They lead by example. If there is a problem, they will give it their all to figure it out. Doers can also be alphas, but their barking is mainly spoken through their actions. Many doers are also Sigmas, emotionally intelligent people who attract others with their caring personality. People follow them because they want to rather than have to.

I had a long talk with my close, longtime friend last night while on my run. I have a handful of high risk projects on my plate. All of my work for these projects take deep thinking, reasoning, and creativity. According to scientists and productivity experts, 4 hours is the amount of time most people can do such deep work uninterrupted in a day. After that fatigue makes it challenging to do deep work. It also reduces your quality of work. Therefore, time is extremely valuable.

My brand and creative writing has been pushed to the back lately in place of my other projects. I’m using a productivity app called Forest @forest_app that helps identify how many hours I am allocating to each project. I seriously need to dedicate more of my hours toward my brand and creative writing. I will use my Forest app to reach this goal.

Keep crushing it my friends! ❤

109th Exercise for 2021: Ran 4.15 miles & did 57th strength training – 200 crunches & 200 push-ups (Ran 329.64 mi. total for 2021).

I love the creative process!

I love the creative process!

I love the creative process as I work to overcome good problems such as a blank page for my next screenplay or executing ideas on how to overcome obstacles for the start-up ventures I have with my business partners. The struggles are real, but I love the process! 💻

Enjoy your creative process my friends! We can support each other through our struggles.

Focus on what you can control.

Focus on what you can control!

So much of our anxiety comes from what we can’t control.

For artists and entrepreneurs, we worry if others will choose our projects.

For attorneys, we worry if opposing counsel and their client will meet us at a reasonable middle ground or if the trier of fact will rule in our favor.

For athletes, we worry if the coach will pick us for the team.

And on and on . . .

However, we do have control on our effort to develop our knowledge, skills, experience, and relationships day in and day out.

There are also ways we can use technology to share our work and bypass the gatekeepers.

Like my soccer coach Ron Mata at Pearl City High School told us in the locker room. Play with tenacity like how a bulldog bites and never lets go.

Keep doing the best you can for your mind, body, and soul. ❤

Keep spreading kindness, empathy, and compassion.

When you do this you are already a winner regardless if the powers that be choose you because as one of my favorite entrepreneurs and writers James Altucher @altucher says, you already chose yourself.

And as I like to say when we work on our passion projects, “Let’s rock!”

In this picture, I completed my 89th exercise for 2021 with 200 crunches and 200 push-ups (44th strength training for 2021). I also ran 3.51 miles in my neighborhood (Ran 267.69 miles total for 2021).

2: Positive Masters – Mindset Clips – Count Your Wins!

2: Positive Masters - Mindset Clips - Count Your Wins!
2: Positive Masters – Mindset Clips – Count Your Wins!
2: Positive Masters – Mindset Clips – Count Your Wins!

Count your wins! This video clip is from 6: Positive Masters – Study & Work with Me. Consistency is key. Whether you’re working on your mind, body, or soul, put a little bit of effort daily. Over time, it adds up.

Schedule your work and exercise in your calendar and in an app that you can share with your accountability partner. At the end of your day, count your wins and journal it. I journal mine in the notes section of my Google calendar that syncs with my MacBook Pro and Galaxy smartphone. I also write it in my Day One journal, a private journal on my MacBook Pro. Third, I write it in apps with my accountability buddies such as my friend’s Discord server and my other friend’s Google Sheets.

I make my productivity a game to make it addictive in a good way! I add up my wins every day. I give myself one win for every accomplishment. For projects that takes deep work, I give myself 2 wins for every 45-minute to 60-minute session of work. For light work that doesn’t take too much brain power, I give myself 1 win for every 45-minute to 60-minute session of work. Also, I give myself 1 win for any work that takes takes less than 45 minutes to complete. Importantly, I give myself a win when I spend quality time with my loved ones as well. I limit myself to only 1 win with my loved ones regardless of the amount of time I spend with them. I dedicate a day a week for my loved ones. By the end of the year, I’ll have thousands of wins. Last year, I accumulated 4,337 wins.

I also have a list of monthly goals that I tackle. I quantify my monthly goals with a percentage of goals I accomplished. My monthly goals keeps me on track with my annual goals.

When I attain a certain amount of wins or a high percentage of monthly goals, I reward myself with a treat like a great celebration meal for short-term goals and a fun product for my long-term goals. I’m constantly adjusting my game. You can set the rules for your productivity game, but make sure it’s challenging. Have fun!

Nezuko from the anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

This past week I started watching Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, an anime about a boy Tanjiro who begins his quest to fight demons after a demon slaughters his family and turns his sister Nezuko into one.

Pictured on my computer screens is Nezuko to inspire me to keep writing my screenplay and novels on top of my legal and business work. So far I’ve written 3 spec screenplays (sci-fi and fantasy, competition and lifestyle, and erotic thriller), and 2 unpublished novels (paranormal thriller and historical action and adventure).

4: Positive Masters Show – Matching Your Passions With Your Projects

4: Positive Masters Show – Matching Your Passions With Your Projects

Episode 4 of the Positive Masters Show has the following practices to help you to match your passions with your projects and to excel at them:

1. Define what passion means to you. Having passion in your project, if defined right, will motivate you to work hard on your project with grit and patience.

2. Practicing “delayed gratification” can help you to succeed on your passion projects and life.

3. Creating many future simulations in your head based on your past success and failure can play a role on your progress for your passion projects. The more you try things, the more you learn from your success and failure, and through this knowledge, you iterate your future simulations to improve.

4. When you no longer have passion for your project, you can apply your knowledge, skills, and relationships that you gained from it to another passion project of yours.

Art forms such as novels, poetry, theatre, movies, music, designs, and drawings, can bring out the emotions of your audience and make them connect with your story that may have a deep message on issues like war, discrimination, racism, physical violence, verbal abuse, bullying, suicide, and mental health. To prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (“CDC”) recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission. CDC also advises the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others.

Pursuant to the CDC, cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under two years old, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.

The cloth face coverings recommended by the CDC are not N-95 respirators or surgical masks. Per CDC guidance, those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”), N-95 respirators, surgical masks, and cloth face coverings do not provide complete protection from germs and other contaminants, nor do they completely eliminate the risk of illness or death. The FDA, along with the U.S. Surgeon General, both agree with and reference the CDC’s recommendation that members of the public use simple cloth face coverings when in a public setting to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, since this will help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others.

As recommended by the CDC, cloth face coverings should be routinely washed depending on the frequency of use. According to the CDC’s guidance, a washing machine should suffice in properly washing a face covering. Individuals should be careful not to touch their eyes, nose, and mouth when removing their face covering and wash hands their immediately after removing their face covering.

Try tweaking your personal life and business to make a pivot.

Try tweaking your personal life and business to make a pivot.

Try tweaking your personal life and business to make a pivot.

Try tweaking your personal life and business to make a pivot.

A couple of days ago, I walked around my neighborhood with my friend Claire Ann Niibu @bizcoachclaire who I’ve known since our time as students at Pearl City High School. She’s a business coach who consults in person and offers online courses such as accounting at www.bizcoachclaire.com. We shared our latest happenings in our lives. “I feel like I reached my limits,” I explained. Throughout 2020, I’ve been feeling so overwhelmed and worn down with my business projects and personal challenges. To top it off, like many of you, the Coronavirus has made things worse. How can I feel like this when I apply so many psychology, philosophy, and mindset practices in my life? I share these practices on my personal blog here at www.jonriki.com, on +positive masters+ blog at www.positivemasters.com, and on +positive masters+ and my social media platforms. Yes, I still go through my ups and downs. In my most challenging times, even with the full force of all the mindset practices I utilize, sometimes all I need is a motivational comment from a friend to snap me out of my dark cloud.

Claire told me to try to make some tweaks in my life and business. Using the word “tweak” total shifted my perception of what I needed to do. Rather than being overwhelmed by the huge mountain I have to climb that’s way out in the distance, I started seeing the different trails in front of me. Maybe, I’ll take a different path, or heck, I should go off of these paths and travel where no one really goes. I’ll wear different shoes with more support. As I hike, instead of only listening to music, I’ll mix in some motivational podcasts. Hmmm, these tweaks are making the journey more fun! I’m noticing the little yellow flowers in the green meadow swaying with the breeze and the puffy white clouds floating across the light blue sky. Reaching the top of the snowcapped mountain is just a bonus. It’s the journey that makes life interesting.

Likewise, I need to see the beauty of my journey in my career. I love learning. Therefore, I have to uncover exciting knowledge that will spark fresh ideas. I get a high off of building new skills. Thus, I need to push the boundaries to try different things that will develop the skills that I need to execute on my ideas. Yup, trial and error, that’s how we evolve. Numerous of iterations and tweaks – that’s what we need to do to keep moving towards our dreams.

Wishing you the best in your journey of personal growth!

With Warmest Aloha,
Jon Riki Karamatsu

I changed my mind regarding watching television shows and playing video games.

I changed my mind regarding watching television shows and playing video games.

I changed my mind regarding watching television shows and playing video games.

I changed my mind regarding watching television shows and playing video games. If they bring joy into your life and help you to alleviate your stress and anxiety, go ahead and consume them in moderation to get that boost of energy that you need to keep working on your dream life.

I hardly ever play video games and rarely watch television programs. I don’t have any video games on my computer, nor do I have a game console at home. About five years ago, I deleted any video game from my smart phone.

This all changed this past Saturday January 25, 2020 when my 9-year-old second cousin E showed me how much he loves the video game “The Battle Cats” by Ponos Corporation (Known as “Battle Nekos,” as named by the founders in Japan), available for smart phones and tablets. He showed me how to play it. The characters are so darn cute, and the battles are fun, like a journey. There’s also funny descriptions for the scenes and characters and motivational comments that are applicable to your life. Playing it was like a tasty medicine that makes you high with pleasure. During the time I played the game, it took my mind off of the darkness that has been clouding my mind and soul: the deaths of those I love, dealing with difficult people and issues, facing prison time for my driving under the influence, opposition against my business projects and career, financial challenges, and other things bothering me. In moderate doses, “The Battle Cats” has recharged my energy to get myself back in the game of business and personal growth. I’m going all-out again after my latest bout with darkness when this past Christmas ended and my sister Mia and her family left Hawaii to return back to California.

As far as watching television, I avoid the news because of its negativity, but I recently began watching more fictional stories and documentaries that has sparked ideas for my fictional and nonfictional writing and motivated me to keep moving forward on my business projects, personal development, and my dreams for a life of creativity and more time with my loved ones.

So there it is, I changed my life policy on avoiding television shows and video games. In moderation, it can actually be a tool to recharge yourself so you can continue to play your real-life game in your career and personal growth.

Your quality of life is the most important. You can choose your path of purpose and define your success. You can reinvent yourself and stack new skills, knowledge, and relationships on top of your existing ones. You can create value for others by yourself or with a few positive people. Your work is a game because it’s fun, and the people you work with are your friends because you genuinely care for one another.

– +positive masters+, Jon Riki Karamatsu, 1/20/2020 –

On Thursday, January 17, 2020, my mom called my cell phone. Her voice was filled with elation and joy, “Mia got the job at Stanford University!” My younger sister Mia is a trauma care doctor, a partner of a group of medical doctors at California Pacific Medical Center at San Francisco, California.

“Oh man, I’m so happy! I’m so happy for her! This is awesome!” My voiced cracked with joyful laughter.

My mom continued, “Earlier, I heard dad cheer, ‘Wohoo!’ probably when Mia told him the good news!” My dad was talking with Mia on the phone before my mom. For those of you who know my dad, this type of celebratory action by him is extremely unusual. He’s normally stoic and logical, fitting for a former electrical engineer who helped build and fix nuclear submarines and warships at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Mia fulfilled a dream of my mom’s mom, my grandma Ellen Sakai. When my two sisters and I were little, she told us that we should become doctors. She emphasized how important doctors were. Grandma also told many of her other grandchildren this.

One Summer, while I attended Summer classes at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, majoring in political science, I was living with her and grandpa Tadao Sakai at their small home on Citron Street, in the heart of McCully, Honolulu, Hawaii. Grandma and I had another one of those talks about whether or not I would become a medical doctor.

“Grandma, I plan to go to law school.”

“Ah, lawyers are dime-a-dozen,” she answered.

“I’m not going to be a regular lawyer, I’m going to be President of the United States.”

I smiled as my grandma laughed away. “No one knows you,” she said while continuing to laugh, “You have to be like Jon Yoshimura (a Honolulu politician who became the Chairman of the Honolulu City Council and had a segment on the local news station called “Ask a Lawyer” where viewers got their legal questions answered.). Why don’t you become a doctor?”

Years later, when Mia participated in the white coat ceremony at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Grandma Sakai’s face was filled with pride and joy. So was the expression on my grandma Bessie Karamatsu’s face, my dad’s mom. There was immense pride among all of us, my dad, mom, baby sister Lara, and I. To serve others as a medical professional is a great calling. Every single one of us needs a doctor. We all get sick. We all will die. It’s our doctor who will help us when we face every illness and disease, and ultimately, our death. It’s not just the skills and knowledge that our doctor continuously develops, but the empathic and caring words that he/she says to us that will help comfort our suffering.

When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

Just as my sister Mia was embarking on an exciting new path of medical care practice, public speaking, and research and development to create new healthcare services and products at Stanford University, I picked up the book “When Breath Becomes Air,” an incredible memoir by Paul Kalanithi, who at the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon and neuroscientist, was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Paul’s transformation from a naïve medical student “possessed,” as he wrote, “by the question of what, given that all organisms die, makes a virtuous and meaningful life?”

As I read “When Breath Becomes Air,” I felt a deep sadness on how Paul Kalanithi’s potential was cut short from cancer, which mixed with the happiness I felt for my sister Mia who will be heading to Stanford University, starting this Summer to expand her medical career as a practitioner and researcher. The connection, Stanford University, made Paul’s story and my sister’s story very real, on top of them being the same age. You see, Paul did amazing work for Stanford University before he died. In addition to his work in the operating room as a neurosurgeon, he was a neuroscientist in a lab at Stanford University, where he worked on neural prosthetic technology that would allow paralyzed people to mentally control a computer cursor or robot arm. I kept thinking on how Mia and many other doctors will continue on their trajectory, something Paul would have loved to do.

I read this book in two sittings. His journey opened my eyes. I was in awe of the work neurosurgeons and neuroscientists do. It wrenched my heart as he struggled with his emotions and logic when faced with extremely difficult situations that brain trauma patients and loved ones of the patients face such as deciding whether to keep a patient alive knowing that the patient could risk losing knowledge of one’s self and everyone and everything around him/her. Without this function, a person loses his/her purpose. The innocence and excitement felt by Paul and his fellow medical classmates were replaced by fatigue, stress, and death after they ventured into their different residency programs at hospitals and medical centers across the country.

Paul’s writing brought me into his world as if I was with him through his every struggle. I loved it when things seemed to be getting better for him and his wife. I chuckled at his humor. When he cried, I cried. I had to pause from my reading numerous times as tears streamed down my cheeks. In fact, I cried as I wrote this article in a Starbucks coffee shop in Waikele, Hawaii packed with people. That’s how impactful Paul’s book has been on me. He wrote it as he was dying, racing against precious seconds. I felt every word of his as if he was talking to me.

In the past, I’ve written numerous times about death and how embracing it can motivate us to be appreciative of everything we have and make the most of our life. However, unless I face my own dying moments, I won’t fully understand what it’s like to be dying, whether it’s quick and instant or slow and gradual. Likewise, none of you will know until it’s your time. Well, Paul, through his writing shows us exactly what he was feeling as he moved towards his death. His experience became my experience. I could see myself in his life and by doing so, I felt myself experiencing death surrounding me. I will forever keep Paul’s book close to me, opening it every time I stress about challenges for my businesses or clients, financial hardship, public ridicule for my failures, and facing prison time for my driving under the influence case, all of which look so small in comparison to dying.

I’ve lost a lot of loved ones over my lifetime. Last year was especially hard with the passing of my aunty JoAnn Matsumoto (My mom’s cousin and a former elementary school teacher), family friend Eric Kanemoto (My soccer coach, Cub Scout Master, Intermediate School teacher for metal shop, and my dad’s close friend. He and my dad coached my soccer teams, led the cub scouting program I was in, volunteered in the parent and teacher association for my Pearl City High School, and worked together on many other projects. They enjoyed talking with each other and the simple pleasures of life), and uncle Glenn Karamatsu (My dad’s younger brother and co-founder of a civil engineering firm in Hawaii). Reading “When Breath Becomes Air” has helped me cope with the deaths of my loved ones.

I love life. I’m extremely grateful to have an opportunity to try many things while I’m alive. I’m super appreciative of my dad, mom, sisters, nieces, nephew, relatives, and friends. And I’m thankful to be able to speak to you. As I move closer towards my death, I hope I’ll be strong, vulnerable, joyful, sad, and loving. After all, I went through it with Paul and felt his breath become air.

Love your life and make the most of it.

Don’t have an all or nothing thinking. Stay positive!

Don't have an all or nothing thinking. Stay positive!

Don’t have an all or nothing thinking. Stay positive!

Cognitive Distortions – Part 1

Don’t have an all or nothing thinking. Stay positive!

The following are a couple of examples of an all or nothing mindset: “I didn’t get accepted into the university that I wanted so I’m a failure” or “I lost my election because people don’t like me.”

All or nothing is the basis for perfectionism. Such thinking makes you feel worthless because of a failure or imperfection. Absolutes don’t exist. If you force your experiences into absolute categories, you’ll always be depressed because whatever you do will never measure up to your exaggerated expectations.

In a dispute, not everyone will believe the facts. Keep doing what you can, but don’t let your stress destroy your health or suck the joy out of your life.

In a dispute, not everyone will believe the facts. Keep doing what you can, but don’t let your stress destroy your health or suck the joy out of your life.

If you’re facing a dispute or litigation, all you can do is present your side of what happened. After that, it’s up to the trier of fact, whether it be a mediator, arbitrator, judge, or jury. If they side with you, great! However, if they don’t, tell yourself that you did what you could. Continue to do what you can, but don’t let your stress destroy your health or suck the joy out of your life.

My friends, I know it’s tough. The truth will always live in you. Your life means a lot to those who love you.

With Warmest Aloha,
Jon
