The compound effect applies to everything we do!

The compound effect applies to everything we do!

The compound effect applies to everything we do! It applies to learning, reading, writing, skills, exercise, relationships, investments, and more. A little hard work every day on your goals add up over time. In a year, you will be a different person from last new year’s day.

Sure, we humans want things immediately. That’s why we give up when things don’t happen right away.

Even brilliant people like Einstein took many years, even decades to reach their goals. There are no shortcuts for audacious goals. Such goals are always difficult.

All great things require perseverance and patience. Your big project will be overwhelming. Therefore, diligently work on one small logical step at a time. Over time, you will put the million pieces of your puzzle together. The picture for your finished puzzle, your vision that turned into reality will look and feel amazing because of the stress, anxiety, and tears you went through.

2: Positive Masters – Mindset Clips – Count Your Wins!

2: Positive Masters - Mindset Clips - Count Your Wins!
2: Positive Masters – Mindset Clips – Count Your Wins!
2: Positive Masters – Mindset Clips – Count Your Wins!

Count your wins! This video clip is from 6: Positive Masters – Study & Work with Me. Consistency is key. Whether you’re working on your mind, body, or soul, put a little bit of effort daily. Over time, it adds up.

Schedule your work and exercise in your calendar and in an app that you can share with your accountability partner. At the end of your day, count your wins and journal it. I journal mine in the notes section of my Google calendar that syncs with my MacBook Pro and Galaxy smartphone. I also write it in my Day One journal, a private journal on my MacBook Pro. Third, I write it in apps with my accountability buddies such as my friend’s Discord server and my other friend’s Google Sheets.

I make my productivity a game to make it addictive in a good way! I add up my wins every day. I give myself one win for every accomplishment. For projects that takes deep work, I give myself 2 wins for every 45-minute to 60-minute session of work. For light work that doesn’t take too much brain power, I give myself 1 win for every 45-minute to 60-minute session of work. Also, I give myself 1 win for any work that takes takes less than 45 minutes to complete. Importantly, I give myself a win when I spend quality time with my loved ones as well. I limit myself to only 1 win with my loved ones regardless of the amount of time I spend with them. I dedicate a day a week for my loved ones. By the end of the year, I’ll have thousands of wins. Last year, I accumulated 4,337 wins.

I also have a list of monthly goals that I tackle. I quantify my monthly goals with a percentage of goals I accomplished. My monthly goals keeps me on track with my annual goals.

When I attain a certain amount of wins or a high percentage of monthly goals, I reward myself with a treat like a great celebration meal for short-term goals and a fun product for my long-term goals. I’m constantly adjusting my game. You can set the rules for your productivity game, but make sure it’s challenging. Have fun!

Aloha!

In this Youtube video, let’s study and work together for three 45-minute Pomodoros (study or work sessions), so we can get a step closer to our goals!

In the first two Pomodoros (study and work sessions), I worked on the fourth draft of my sci-fi and fantasy screenplay. In the third Pomodoro (study and work session), I created audiograms from my fifth podcast episode “5: Positive Masters Show – Get Better Sleep.”

I spent hours handpicking each song in this video from the catalogs of music I purchased the licenses for while I studied and worked on my passion projects. The vibe I got from the lofi and chill songs had to blend well with my concentration on my studies and work – soothing tunes and steady rhythm that play in the background while I crush my passion projects.

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a lawyer, small business person, and retired politician from Hawaii. My passion projects are writing fiction and creating content about mindset and mental health.

Quadrupling Down in My Race Against Time – Race Against Time Part X

I have so much #gratitude for Starbucks @starbucks , especially the @waikelestarbucks @waikelepo because the baristas are so nice and the #vibe is good. I can #work there for 10 hours straight. Pictured here are some free samples: a brownie and the Pink Drink! Grateful ! Got my constant companion, my @apple #macbookpro #laptop ! ūüíĽ

For the past few years, I feel like almost every month or two, someone I know dies. My last poem was about racing against time. It’s the 9th time since 2004 that I’ve titled a post on my website “Racing Against Time.” We have to go all-out on what we want to do before our time in this realm expires. I’m super #thankful to have lived this long and experienced many things I envisioned #accomplishing but I still have so much more on my mind that I need to execute before I die. I’m quadrupling down on my work and going harder now! ūüíĽ

My friends, keep going, keep loving, and keep smiling! ūüėÄ

With Warmest Aloha,
Jon

“I’m Racing Against Time” – Racing Against Time Part IX

You elevated me with this high.

Break open another special moment.

I hold my heart. It’s thumping. I’m still alive.

How many thumps do I have left before I die?

Back at my computer, I download my mind.

I have to keep going. I’m racing against time.

I have more to do, more to share.

My joy, my pain, how much I care.

Detach the anger, detach the hate.

If we all have love, we can determine our world’s fate.

Growth Mindset

I’m a strong believer in having a positive mindset in order to be happier and more fulfilled in life. ¬†In this post, I would like to point out the importance of us having a growth mindset, which is believing that our abilities and intelligence can be developed. ¬†We can develop our knowledge and skills by reading and practicing everyday. ¬†The more we work on our knowledge and skills, the better we get. ¬†If we keep up this daily practice, over time, we may attain the knowledge and become very good at the skills we envisioned ourselves achieving.

I like to schedule in my Google calendar blocks of time to learning and building skills and I color code them according to the subject matter. ¬†I count each 30-minute period of learning or practicing as a “win” in my Count My Wins program I created for myself. ¬†This program gives me a natural high from the happy chemicals released when I finish each 30-minute self-development session. I’m a very curious person so I push myself even in areas I’m unfamiliar with. ¬†I really want to become a better person mentally, spiritually, and physically.

Have fun in your self-development!  Crush it!

3 of my daily practices: growth mindset, mindfulness, and gratitude.

(I took a picture of these plants and trees in Waikele, Hawaii on March 12, 2019. They represent growth in our growth mindset practice. I’m always mindful of the beauty around me. I’m grateful to experience such simple pleasures.)

My awesome REI Bookpacker Plus backpack with all my gear to make me a mobile office.

In the past year, I’ve stopped using my briefcase that I got from the University of Hawaii at Manoa bookstore when I was a college student and turned to my awesome REI Bookpacker Plus backpack that I used while a law student at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. It’s so comfortable and sturdy, great for walking and moving about in the bus transportation system in Honolulu, Hawaii. Briefcases aren’t comfortable to carry. Backpacks like the REI Bookpacker Plus has cushion and support for long walks.

My REI Bookpacker Plus also has a lot of space and compartments to put all my useful things. My backpack carries the following: good luck charms; Apple MacBook Pro; plastic folders of different colors from Office Depot and Fisher, which holds my business material; black gunmetal Bose Quietcomfort 25 noise-cancelling headphones; black Bose Soudsport wireless headphones; space gray Apple iPod; plugs and cables for my devices; batteries; black Imation flash drive; black with silver designs samurai umbrella by Waterfront in Japan; UNIQLO black foldable windbreaker hoodie; black Fossil sunglasses; black with gold accent Perry Ellis prescription glasses; several pairs of Dailies AquacomfortPlus contact lenses; Victorinox Swiss Army knife with my first and middle name on the transparent frame that my mom and dad got for me when they went to Switzerland; blue-purple with gold accents Parker dress pen; blue Eagle Scout pen with a rubber end to touch the screen of my phone, great for designing ads; pens; mechanical pencil; eraser; gray Totoro foldable reusable bag; black blue gunmetal Tiger Sahara stainless steel water bottle; hand sanitizer; napkins; and food and snacks.

The one thing I need is a portable charger to recharge my smartphone. I’ll reward myself this once I achieve a major goal.

All in all, I’m pretty functional as a mobile office with the gear I have in my backpack. The only times, I need my office is to work on¬†my finances with my Dell PC desktop; scan, copy, and¬†print in color and black and white documents on my Brother Inkjet All-in-One, or print large amounts of documents quickly in black and white with my Dell laser printer. I’m extremely grateful for my backpack and all my useful things in it that help me to maximize my productivity. It makes work fun!

My daily practice: gratitude!

Wrote 71,343 Words for My 2nd Novel

For one of my projects, my second novel, a historical, suspense and romance story, I have to do a lot of research and reading on Iraq from 2003 to 2011. I also got input from my female friend who was born and raised in Iraq and endured the war. I wrote 71,343 words so far. My goal is to have 80,000 to 100,000 words. It took me 8 years to finish my first story, a historical, suspense, paranormal and romance novel based in Honolulu, Hawaii and the spirit world, that received some interest but it hasn’t been picked up yet. This one is taking me 4+ years so far, much faster. Maybe I can finish my third fictional writing in 2 years? Here, I’m writing at McDonald’s in Waikele on the evening of March 20, 2018.

Happy Place and Peaceful Walk

Walked home at 11 P.M. on March 6, 2018 after Starbucks closed. There’s a peacefulness in walking alone while listening to an educational podcast after a day’s work at a place that helps me to attain a level of peace, happiness, and productivity.

“The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing” by Al Ries & Jack Trout

I finished reading “The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing” by Al Ries & Jack Trout late this morning of November 18, 2017 at Starbucks in Pearl City, Hawaii. I learned about this book through Tim Ferriss who is an entrepreneur, author, podcast host, and investor. Super good! Very applicable! My mind is churning up stuff that I’m putting into words with my MacBook Pro.

Consistency

Since I was young, I’ve been setting goals and then practicing, studying, and doing whatever it takes everyday to achieve the smaller goals in order to reach my larger goals.

As a young soccer player in elementary school, I wasn’t big and strong like some of the other players. ¬†I did have quickness and speed, but to better myself, I had to train everyday on my ball handling skills and playmaking skills. ¬†I read books, watched videos, and practiced with the soccer ball everyday at parks, in my yard, and even in the house. ¬†Eventually, over the years, when I reached high school, I made it to the select teams I wanted and was recognized with awards.

Likewise, to become a politician, I started training to be a politician from my teens by studying political science and then later law, volunteering for politicians at their office and for their campaigns, joined the Young Democrats, business organizations, jaycees, and even got appointed to the Pearl City Neighborhood Board.

When I ran for the Senate and then Vice President of the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii at Manao (ASUH), I would post my posters at 1 A.M. to 3 A.M. in the morning, go to sleep, and then wake up at 6 A.M. to pass out my fliers that had my goals for the university to student commuters walking onto campus from the parking lot and students walking onto campus from the dorms. In between classes I would pass out my fliers to students walking through the mall on campus, with some of them avoiding me by walking around me and onto the grass.  At lunch breaks or in the evening, I spoke to the various student organizations about my campaign and what I was going to do for them.  I went door-to-door at the dorms passing out easter eggs that my mom and I wrote my name and office on, and I posted my posters on dorm doors of my supporters.  I did this for months and was successful in winning a Senate seat in ASUH in 1996 and then the following year, the Vice Presidency.

While in college, in 1996, I typed out my campaign plan and gathered all the necessary information to run for a Hawaii State House seat or Hawaii State Senate seat in Pearl City that was so thick that I had to put it into a binder.  After campaigning a number of small political races and even mayor and governor races, by 2002, I was ready to launch my own campaign for the Hawaii State House, but all the Pearl City races had an incumbent.  However, the Waipahu, Waikele, Village Park, and Royal Kunia district had an open race due to redistricting.  I moved to Waikele and re-typed my entire plan to fit this district. Over the years, I had collected contact information from family, friends, and acquaintances and built a database, which I used to raise $16,000.  I mailed three mailers and walked the district 3 times, which is over 18,000 homes over a period of 7 months and lost 20 pounds and burned holes into my pants because of the constant rubbing of my bag that held my campaign material.  Like my college student government elections, people told me they voted for me because of my ideas and their respect for my hard work.  Over my 8-year political career, I walked my district over 10 times, which is over 60,000 households.

In soccer and politics, I consistently worked hard mentally and physically until I was fortunate to reach my goals.

As far as my career in law, consistency in my studies and efforts helped me to make a comeback after I received bad grades and was placed on probation while attending the ¬†University of Hawaii at Manoa. ¬†I had a 3.2 GPA but it plunged during a time when I broke up with my first girlfriend. ¬†My college counselor asked me what I wanted to be, and I told her, “a lawyer.” ¬†She looked at my grades and then looked back at me and asked, “Do you like helping people?” ¬†I answered, “Yes.” ¬†She continued, “How about being a social worker?” ¬†I smiled, unable to agree with her. ¬†After that I made my comeback by getting 4.0 grades for several semesters and if I did fall short, I had a 3.8 grade point average for that semester.

Now, after leaving the public sector in April 2015, and pursuing a number of projects in the private sector, either on my own or with business partners, I’m facing a lot of hardship. ¬†Some projects had to end, while others keep moving forward. ¬†Everyday, I make sure I work on tasks that will add up in helping me and my¬†team in achieving a larger goal. ¬†A couple of projects are getting close to fruition – just need to get past a few more walls. ¬†It’s exciting and depressing at the same time. ¬†Sometimes you’re enthusiastic, while other times you want to cry.

I try my best to surround myself with positive and inspiring people like my friend Brandon who is always upbeat and optimistic. ¬†Basically, he’s my life coach. ¬†My mom is my number one supporter who has encouraged me to try many things since I was a child. ¬†My father’s tenacious style of work ethic has rubbed off on me as I relentless push forward despite my failures. ¬†A girl I know who’s from Japan came to Hawaii to learn hula, and now has 4 halaus in Japan and performs and teaches in Hawaii. ¬†That would be like me going to Japan to learn sword fighting and the Japanese language, mastering it, and creating schools back in Hawaii. ¬†She’s an inspiration to me. ¬†My business partners for my various projects always find a positive point even when things are going bad, just like how my mom taught me to look at a glass half-filled as half-full rather than half-empty.

Below is a video by Marie Forleo, an entrepreneur who I’m inspired by, and in it she recommends 5 things to do to stay committed on your goals.

  1. Keep your eye on the “why.” ¬†Why you want to do what you do?
  2. Pick your battle. ¬†Pick one thing and stick with it. ¬†Don’t try to do everything at one time.
  3. Schedule it.  Schedule your priorities.  Build you life around your priorities.
  4. Ignore your feelings. ¬†Ignore the voice in your head that cries and says, “I don’t feel like it.” ¬†Override that voice because you know the power of consistency.
  5. Catch that wagon. ¬†Don’t have an all or nothing mindset. ¬†You will fall off the wagon. ¬†Just run and catch that wagon.

“Success doesn’t come from what you do occasionally, it comes from¬†what you do consistently.” – Marie Forleo.

Here is a song called “Try Everything” by Shakira to inspire you as you consistently pursue your goals, whether it’s for your career, health, or personal life. ¬†My wish for you is to be happy in this life and the next! ¬†I’ll celebrate with¬†you at the finish line, no matter what place we come in!
