Boy & His Daruma

When I was newly in this world, my grandma Ellen Sakai got me this awesome display for Boys Day from Japan protected by a glass box showing a baby boy and his daruma. They are determined to reach their goals despite others saying they can’t. A daruma is a doll that reminds you of your goals. You paint one eye when you have a goal and color in the other eye after you achieve it. A daruma is round so it will get back up when it is knocked down. The Japanese Zen have a saying, “Fall down seven times, get up eight.” I grew up very focused on what I want, even one track mind at times, obsessively attacking my most passionate goals. I’m always thinking about them even when I’m not working. I’ve learned to tame my obsession for my goals by understanding that there are things I can’t control, so I focus on what I can. Good luck on your goals! With Warmest Aloha, Jon

The light will push through.

Something’s happening.

A feeling, a buzz-like high.

The light will push through.

– Jon Riki Karamatsu, Haiku Poem #138, 6/27/2018 –

No matter how hard life gets, whether it be financial hardship, a death of a loved one, or a broken heart, we have to do our best to see all the good we have in our life. Day by day as we work at our projects, we get better and a bit closer to our dreams. In person and through social media, we can support one another. We’re in this together.

I took this picture in Waikele, Hawaii on 10/30/2018.

With Warmest Aloha,
Jon

A smile to a stranger goes a long way.

I ran 5 miles in Waikele, Oahu, Hawaii on Monday October 29, 2018 at about 2:00 P.M. I ran up the hill to the upper part of Waikele. At the top, I smiled and waved to a female professional groundskeeper who was working on the front area of a house on the main street with her co-workers, a man and another woman. Their white van was parked on the driveway that stuck out onto the sidewalk. A little surprised, her serious face turned into a smile, and she waved back.

When I reached the house again on my second lap, I had slowed down into a walk, resulting from me being out of shape and the heat from the intense humidity. The same lady went out of the way to meet me on the street. “Did you run around? she asked with a beaming smile.

“Yes,” I answered.

“How many miles is it?”

“It’s about 2 miles.” The neighborhood block contains several planned communities within Waikele and about 40% of the Waikele Premium Outlets, which is about 2.5 miles to go around.

“Have a good one!” she cheered.

“Thank you!” Her happy energy pumped me up to get back into a run.

I stopped by the Waikele Community Park to drink water from a water faucet near the swimming pool. As I walked out into the parking lot, I saw the lady again in the driver seat of a the white van with her colleagues inside. They were parked in a stall near the grass of the park.

Upon eye contact, we enthusiastically waved at each other with laughter.

I put my hand by my mouth like it was half of a megaphone. “I’m following you!” I joked.

She laughed and made a running motion with her arms and upper body. “I want to run like you,” she said.

“Have a good day!” I told her. Happy, I was again motivated to run the last part of the way home.

This was one of only three people I spoke to that day and it made my day!

When I got home, I was even more happier when I found out entrepreneur James Altucher liked one of my haiku pictures I posted about going within ourselves to build, explore, and create. Plus, earlier that day, a business partner of mine from Kona, Hawaii emailed my a nice message, following up on a great meeting we had last Thursday at Starbucks in Waikele. All this positive energy is motivating me to finish my 3rd edits/4th draft of my 2nd novel, a historical, suspense, and romance based in Baghdad, Iraq during the U.S. occupation.

Everyday we can spread love through a smile!

Children of a Neverending Summer

The children of a neverending summer jumping off a stepladder into the ocean. As adults, life can come at us hard. Children remind us to live in the present moment. They clearly define mindfulness by the way they live. Beautiful Haleiwa, Hawaii with my friend Mike who added comments on the moment. We reminisced when we were children. We could relate on how these children felt, not wanting the moment to end, playing until the last drop of sunlight.

Gratitude + Anything Is Possible

I learned gratitude from my mom. She has also encouraged me to try new things since I was a child. Anything is possible is what my mom instilled in me. I share with her and my dad every plan I have.

Here’s my mom and my baby niece at Pearl Ridge Center, Aiea, Hawaii on 8/2/2018.

My Last Moments

I stood on the top of the ridge and admired the beautiful green trees swaying far below with the wind. The last of the blue skies were painted over with shades of gray. Ahead, dark clouds were sweeping in like an angry predator. They swallowed peak after peak and kept coming for me.

I calmly inserted my headphones in my ears and played my favorite song. The happy tune brought me a smile. My time here would be over soon, but I was content. All that came to my mind was my mom, dad, sisters, nieces, family, and my closest friends. It’s funny how we spend much of our lives building so much, pushing through all the problems and terrible people that seemed so important to do back then. Yet, in the last moments of our lives, all we think about are the ones who really mattered. Memories of joy with them came blasting in like a movie in fast forward. You see their faces and then you’re gone.

Start-Ups

I have so much gratitude for my business partners, especially my FBO partners who have been working with me for almost three years, and all of us are pushing forward and taking on challenges without pay for all these years in addition to other projects we have for ourselves or with other groups. Trying to make personal ends meet while developing start-ups are tough and takes patience, but the process of learning, building new skills, and expanding relationships gives us a high. We’re seeing the destination of each goal getting closer and closer with our daily grind. My heart is with all of you as you strive for your goals. Fall down seven times and get back up eight (Japanese proverb). I’m cheering for you!!!

Illuminate the Light Within Us

Today, I had a nice lunch at Jade Dynasty Seafood Restaurant in Ala Moana Center with Speaker Emeritus of the Hawaii State House of Representatives Calvin K.Y. Say and three friends of his who have done amazing work in various sectors of business in Hawaii and abroad. My good friend Brandon Mitsuda had a nice talk with Speaker last week, which prompted him to reach out because he was thinking of me. His caring heart is always refreshing, and today he sparked light for me for my on and off feelings of emptiness that have become my norm for the past three years as I distanced myself from political, business, charity, and social events, unless it was a cause I connected with or relevant to a business project I was working on. There are many moments when I feel joy and a zest for life, but it’s scary how quickly these great feelings can leave me alone and in nothingness. It’s like a numbness that fogs up my vision of the many good things around me such as my loving family and friends, good momentum for a project that my business partners and I have been working on, and new opportunities presented before me. I love the excitement of business and politics, but at the same time I’m pained by the dark energy it attracts. All people have positive and negative energy, some more of one than the other. It’s impossible to completely avoid negative people. They’re everywhere. You see how they behave badly as drivers on the road. They make tantrums at work and yell at their family at home. When you succeed, they punish you harder on your failures or simply enjoy it as a spectator. When I’m vibrant and happy, I take the negative energies and use it towards my momentum for positive actions like an Aikido martial artist does in taking down an attacker. However, when I’m feeling down, I have to do all I can to not let the shadows pull me into a blank space. I have many daily practices, which I’ve mentioned in my peace page and previous posts that has helped me to fight off this shadowy assassin that has destroyed so many other souls. In my first novel, I wrote about how our suffering follows us even after we die, therefore, there’s no escape from darkness without us confronting it with all the light illuminated from within us through love, compassion, empathy, and gratitude. Speaker Calvin K.Y. Say is an example of how to live with such qualities. I’m extremely lucky to have his friendship. In revealing my vulnerable side, I hope it helps you to push forward with all your practices that lift your spirit whether it be spending time with loved ones, exercise, listening to music, creative writing, going to the ocean, or other such enjoyable experiences. May positive energy be with you always!

With Warmest Aloha,

Jon

Attacking Our Long-Term Goals

When attacking my long-term goals, it usually takes 6 to 7 years for them to manifest. I have one goal that is on its 12th year. To quell the worry monster inside us from wondering if we will get there, or if all these years of work are worth it, we can keep working on each project step by step, day by day to knock off many small wins until we reach our vision. Each small win gives us a dopamine rush or feelings of accomplishment! Also, we can be like water, and adjust to receive different variations of our dreams.

I love the feel of books being physically with me.

I love the feel of books being physically with me as well as their soul. I have books on shelves in my living room and office. I also have stacks of them on my nights stands on both sides of my bed. When reading before bed, books don’t radiate blue light like when reading from a computer, pad, or smartphone. Further, I take a book with me on trips or to the coffee shop.

My Swiss Army Pocket Knife

My Swiss Army Knife from my parents when they visited Switzerland as they toured Europe some years ago. It has my first and middle name on it. I made the leather knife holder with my initials on it when I was a Cub Scout in Pack 75 of Pearl City, Hawaii and used it through Boy Scouts of Troop 75 and Team 75 of Pearl City, Hawaii and up to now. Scouting taught me about learning, teamwork, and perserverance. I had to use my knife’s scissors to open up a small package of snacks from Japan while I typed and read last night at Starbucks. Build Value and Peace

Our “why” is what will motivate us to provide value for others.

Our desire to learn and ability to work with others will give us the “how.”

Our daily work and patience towards the long game will determine our “when.”

The above is our sweat equity for our vision.

If . . . no, when we build our own abundance of capital, we can add it to our sweat equity to power a value-making system that creates jobs, services, and products for others.

Another influential practice for a human is to always be mindful and grateful, and consistently loving, compassionate, and empathetic towards all beings and the universe. Enlightening oneself to transcend beyond the suffering of life and death.

Building value and peace. May they both be with you.

Happy Office at Starbucks

Getting pulled in different directions at the same time. How do I resolve this? By working day and night at my happy office, Starbucks. In my days as a politician or litigation attorney, I would have difficulty doing this. But working in business development and law, in-between my meetings, much of my work is reading, analyzing, and drafting content and transactions, thus, my mighty MacBook Pro computer can keep me mobile, productive, and connected. Why are coffee shops my happy office? (1) Positive energy from people working, studying, reading, or meeting; (2) I’m fixed to a table to work and just using the restroom takes effort, so I keep working as much as possible with fewer breaks; and (3) Beverages and food are available so I can remain working.

Working @ Coffee Talk!

20180311_133535.jpg

Chaired my board of directors meeting for Jodo Shu Hawaii earlier and now working at Coffee Talk in Kaimuki, Hawaii while my mom attends a meeting for wellness products. I’ve been in the zone for the past week, pulling off nonstop writing and learning sessions of up to 10 hours straight at coffee shops. I snapped out of a low and depressive energy period caused by stress and anxiety – partly because life and death became very real when I had to save my cousin-in-law from choking on food. There’s so much I want to accomplish before I die. I want to play a small role in providing value to others, especially in products and services that can help others find peace. So excited to work!!!

Saved My Cousin-In-Law’s Life With The Heimlich Maneuver

Last night on March 2, 2018, I used the Heimlich maneuveur to save the life of my cousin-in-law who couldn’t breathe because he was choking on food at my home. The piece of food shot out of his throat on my second attempt. I’m so happy my cousin-in-law is alive. Below is information I gathered in case if you need to save someone from choking to death. Live every day to the fullest.

Performing abdominal thrusts involves a rescuer standing behind an upright patient and using his or her hands to exert pressure on the bottom of the diaphragm. This compresses the lungs and exerts pressure on any object lodged in the trachea, hopefully expelling it. This amounts to an artificially induced cough. For example, WebMD recommends the rescuer placing his or her fist just above the person’s bellybutton and grasping it with the other hand. To assist a larger person, more force may be needed. The Mayo Clinic recommends the same placement of fist and hand and upward thrusts as if you are trying to lift the person.

If the victim is not upright, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends positioning the person on his or her back, then straddling the torso and using chest thrusts.

Our dreams light the way. Even if it’s a speck of light far away in a mass of darkness, we’ve got to keep working towards it. Our dreams give us purpose in life, and for some of us, even reasons to live. Whether visible or not, many are cheering you on! Keep going!

2018 Jodo Shu Fujinkai Service, Annual Membership Meeting, and New Year’s Party.

I offered incense during the service and made a speech as President of Jodo Mission of Hawaii at the Fujinkai annual general membership meeting today, Sunday February 25, 2018. After we had a New Year’s party with food, memory games, bingo, and recognition of members who are 80 years old and above. It was a nice time!
