Freedom, Not Terror

Orphaned by their war.

I rebel for my people.

Freedom, not terror.

– Jon Riki Karamatsu, Haiku Poem #137, 6/19/2018 (This poem was inspired by the protagonist in my second novel who struggles with his sadness and anger over the death of his parents caused by the Iraq war. I’m editing the first draft.) –

Attacking Our Long-Term Goals

When attacking my long-term goals, it usually takes 6 to 7 years for them to manifest. I have one goal that is on its 12th year. To quell the worry monster inside us from wondering if we will get there, or if all these years of work are worth it, we can keep working on each project step by step, day by day to knock off many small wins until we reach our vision. Each small win gives us a dopamine rush or feelings of accomplishment! Also, we can be like water, and adjust to receive different variations of our dreams.

I work on what I can today

To distract me from worrying about tomorrow, I work on what I can today.

At times we decline opportunities to pursue our dreams, which causes us stress. I’ve been through it with my political and legal career, and now I’m going through it with my recent goals in the private sector. Focusing on what I can work on now has helped me move forward on my journey, even through the roughest parts. I wish you the best in your journey. I’m feeling you and cheering for you!

With Warmest Aloha, Jon

Our worries can make it hard to sleep.

Our worries can make it hard to sleep. Before bed, I like to drink a hot decaffeinated tea or hot chocolate, take a hot shower, and wrap myself in this cozy Nautica bathrobe that my sister Mia gave me some years ago for Christmas. Also, reading a book, especially fiction helps. Every so often I meditate to clear my mind. As a last resort, we could take a supplement to help us sleep so long as we are okay waking up wanting to sleep more, which is better than waking up with morning anxiety. Wishing you the best!

Wrote 71,343 Words for My 2nd Novel

For one of my projects, my second novel, a historical, suspense and romance story, I have to do a lot of research and reading on Iraq from 2003 to 2011. I also got input from my female friend who was born and raised in Iraq and endured the war. I wrote 71,343 words so far. My goal is to have 80,000 to 100,000 words. It took me 8 years to finish my first story, a historical, suspense, paranormal and romance novel based in Honolulu, Hawaii and the spirit world, that received some interest but it hasn’t been picked up yet. This one is taking me 4+ years so far, much faster. Maybe I can finish my third fictional writing in 2 years? Here, I’m writing at McDonald’s in Waikele on the evening of March 20, 2018.

Stay on the Offense

We can stay on the offense by working on things we can control. Reacting and panicking to things we can’t control will put us on the defense, destroying our mood, which in turn, kills our productivity.

Motivate Myself

Started my early morning of February 13, 2018 with some oatmeal with banana, green tea latte, and a motivational entrpreneurial video. My goals for this week: update the business plan for our FBO company, complete 1,800 words for a total of 70,000 words for my 2nd novel, draft performance agreement and partner agreement for a concert I have a minority interest in, write the strategy for a variance request for the development of homes for a development and construction company I’m working with, craft some policies regarding land use for an agency I’m doing volunteer work for, run 4+ miles 4x, and review latest construction repairs for Jodo Shu Hawaii.

Did she forget about me? Had she really moved on?

On that early evening, I waited by the small, shallow pond in the middle of the large field like we planned a year ago. It was dark. The clouds blacked out all of the stars above. Anxious, I began to pull at the tall blades of wild grass. Did she forget about me? Had she really moved on? In a bitter argument sometime after our promise, I was blocked out of her life. If she had wanted to reconcile with me, she would have contacted me. I was beyond wishing. Instead, I was living in a fantasy.

I waited for about an hour and gave up. Rather than heading back home, I kicked off my shoes, took off my socks, and rolled up my pants to just below my knees. I entered the pond, in an attempt to make the most of my trip there. The cool water felt nice, and I was mindful of the soft mud squeezing between my toes. I slowly proceeded to the middle of the pond, where at that point, I had no care of wetting my clothes. So I crouched down, placed my face in my hands, and let my emotions go. I felt my tears seeping out beneath my palms, making little drops that fell into the water. I stayed like this for some time.

Then, I heard something. There was a buzz. Then a second buzz. And then another and another. I raised my face out of my hands to see what was going on. There were hundreds of fireflies flying in the air, lighting up the pond like tiny flickering candles.

Further away, I heard a faint sound of grass moving in the darkness. Many of the fireflies flew towards the noise. And then I saw a silhouette of the curves of a woman near the other end of the pond. She took a step into the light of the fireflies. It was Kaylee. She was smiling at me in a fitted long-sleeve top and a short skirt. We stood there for a few moments, just looking at each other. My tears were now coming from joy. I grinned back at her.

“Sorry,” she broke the silence. “It took me longer than I thought.”

I looked at her high-heeled sandals and giggled with a shake of my head.

Kaylee followed my eyes and looked down at her feet. “Yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking.” She bent over to unstrap and take off her sandals. Then, she lifted her light skirt and waded into the pond. As she walked towards me, ripples moved across the pool of water. Upon meeting me, she wrapped her arms around my waist and placed her cheek against my chest. I embraced her body in my arms.

Strangely, the fireflies reacted by moving around us like we were star actors of some kind of show. “Uh, guys, what are you doing?” I asked them.

Kaylee lifted her head from my chest and watched them fly around us. “Let them be,” she joked.

She turned her attention back to me, and gazed into my eyes. “I missed you.”

“I missed you too,” I replied.

Still holding one another, we inched closer. I closed my eyes and felt her soft lips press against mine. My eyelids tightened firmer and quivered upon feeling a euphoric sensation that moved throughout my soul.

Life sometimes has its strange twists and turns. I was glad that we both took a chance on this one.

Hi Everyone,

I hope you enjoyed this romantic scene. To help me evoke my emotions, I listened to the songs “Sleepy Eyes” by Elohim & Whethan and “Stargazing” by Kygo ft. Justin Jesso while I was writing this, which I posted below. I found the picture shown above, of a boy and girl in a shallow pond in a field of grass at http://gde-fon.com/download/guy_girl_lake_water_night_fireflies/401727/1680×1050.

Enjoy! May peace and love be with you!

Construction Law

My cousin-in-law Christine Ogawa Karamatsu (she has a career in law, health, and government affairs) saw on social media that I’m working on projects involving construction, so she brought her construction law book at our family Thanksgiving dinner at my parents’ house in Pearl City, Hawaii. I have so much love and gratitude for her thoughtfulness. Happy Thanksgiving!

“The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing” by Al Ries & Jack Trout

I finished reading “The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing” by Al Ries & Jack Trout late this morning of November 18, 2017 at Starbucks in Pearl City, Hawaii. I learned about this book through Tim Ferriss who is an entrepreneur, author, podcast host, and investor. Super good! Very applicable! My mind is churning up stuff that I’m putting into words with my MacBook Pro.

Excited for Every Day!

Even when I’m tired, I get up excited to be working on a few projects that I’m passionate about that have the potential to positively impact Hawaii and the Pacific rim with more revenue, jobs, services, and products – maybe even the world. I fear failure, but I learn and develop relationships from both, success and failure, which continues to build my ideas, skills, and network, so like a music producer/DJwho mixes different sounds and talent, I can mix my ideas, skills, and friends across different sectors of our economy to create a different service or product for people to enjoy. When I was a politician, I did the same technique to create or better programs and laws. Building things through entrepreneurship and lawmaking is much more fun than fighting and breaking apart things through litigation, which I also do once in awhile. I recently got an arbitration case closed, which I’m so happy about. Here I am reviewing about 750 pages of documents for one of my projects. Notice I have my good friend, my Macbook Pro. I have so much gratitude for all the things we’ve done together. Have a great weekend my friends!!!

Step by step to get back to peak performance in our lives

Sometimes it’s a struggle to maintain consistency on our goals, whether it be for our career or personal life. I’ve been feeling fatigued lately so my level of effort on my exercise, meditation, and fictional writing has dropped. My main focus has been on my business projects, but after that, I feel tired and sleepy. I forced myself to run outdoors 2 to 4 miles a couple of times this week, and meditated while lying in bed because of my lack of motivation, and this has helped a tiny bit to keep me moving forward. Whatever it takes to keep us going right? Today, Sept. 23, 2017, I woke up with my hair standing up, and put my exercise clothes on to motivate me to go to the gym. Step by step to get back to my highest level of performance. If you are feeling down, I support your little steps to get back to peak performance. I wish you the best in your efforts on your goals!!!

Music Video of Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow

I’ve always been filled with imagination since I was a little kid.  As an adult, I still dream and work hard until it’s hard to believe I’m living things I’ve imagined.  Fiction plays a huge role in inspiring our reality.  And vice versa, writers often infuse reality into fiction. Storytelling has a way of bringing us humans closer because it draws out our emotions.  I believe as adults, we should never stop imagining, and if we have a story, don’t be afraid to share it.  You never know, you may change the world.

Here’s a nice music video of Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow, characters of the Game of Thrones novel and television show.  The song “If You Leave Me Now” by Foxes matches the scenes from this awesome show.  Last Sunday, in Episode 6 of Season 7, Daenerys and Jon’s romance blossomed.  I love romance.  Nothing beats that warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you love someone.

I don’t watch much television or movies that much, but Games of Thrones is the exception.  I also have the books.  They’re so good, and a nice break from work.  Though, Games of Thrones inspires me to work harder.  Author and Executive Producer George R.R. Martin is so inspirational!

A Sparrow Came to Speak to Me

A little brown sparrow came to me on my window sill. It chirped to me comforting words, “Right now the sun is shining and the trees are swaying. I am here and everything seems to be alright. But at night, I will be gone, and they will come for you. Darkness has won here. Close your eyes and go back to your world. She will be waiting for you in the garden by the stream, sitting on the bench under the cherry blossom tree. You know who I am talking about.”

The bird hopped along and faced its back towards me at the edge, ready to launch into flight.

“Wait, why are you telling me this?” I asked.

The sparrow twitched his head backwards at me and chirped, “Because you created us. We want you to see the beauty of what you’ve done for us. The people here don’t know who you really are, but we do. Don’t give up on us just because of the pain you’re feeling here.”

He turned his head back forward and took off into flight, flying high above the coconut trees, becoming smaller and smaller until he became a speck and disappeared.

I wiped away a tear that trickled down my cheek. I knew what he meant, and I understood what I had to do.

Win-Win Thinking!

Like many of you, I strive for things that have a great amount of uncertainty that create anxiety and stress. I wish I was a superhuman, immune to such feelings but I’m not. So I make an effort on overcoming anxiety and stress with many practices like gratitude, mindfulness, win-win thinking, exercise, balanced diet, writing, music, nature, time with positive people, sensory therapy, meditation, and such. Whenever I work on any of my goals that has a high risk of losing time and money such as elected politics, business projects, and fiction and nonfiction books, I try to mitigate my risk with research, strategy, and hard work, but no matter what, a degree of uncertainty will always exist.

To alleviate my anxiety on the uncertainty, I practice win-win thinking or positive thinking by telling myself, “When I invest time and money into a project I’m passionate about, at worse, I get a higher education like attaining another college degree. At best, I get a return on my investment on top of my education!” By looking at my goals in this manner, I see the outcome as a win no matter what the outcome because my time and money are used towards bettering myself in gaining more knowledge, skills, and relationships, but if I succeed, I can get a higher education and make a living out of what I love! Stay positive everyone!

My 4th Novel

A sprinkle of stars illuminated the sky with layers of blue and purple as a lightly filled tree stood guard near us. Every so often a cool breeze would create a soothing rustle with the showery leaves of the tree. This meditative moment was what the three of us needed. We were looking beyond our embattled past at another world we had envisioned before we met. Now, together as a team, we were determined to get there.

Walk with me, I want to show you my world.

“Walk with me. I want to show you my world.”  We left the Japanese garden filled with pink cherry blossom trees that lined along the beautiful clear stream. The green grass carpet that was similar to the type at luxurious golf courses, turned into dirt, rocks, and weeds. I led Kaylee into the forest as the sun began to set behind the tall tree-line. It became darker as we proceeded further into the forest, but golden rays from the sun seeped through the many branches high above. These spotlights guided us along the trail.

I grabbed Kaylee’s hand and pulled her with me off of the walking path. We cut through ferns and brush. I made sure I took the brunt of the leaves and stems that rubbed against us. Once we got out of the wild growth of the forest we reached a large circular patch of wild grass with small yellow flowers scattered throughout it. In the center was a green mound, like a miniature mountain. I smiled at her. “We’re here.”

Her eyes fixated on the grass hill. She turned to me with a grin. “How did you find this place?”

“I needed to escape. They show us what they want us to see. But oftentimes there’s beauty hidden. Sort of like what society expects from us. So I walked out of the beautiful man-made park and found this. I meditate on top of that grassy hill regularly.”

Kaylee kicked off her sandals. “Let’s go!” she blurted. She ran ahead towards the mound. I chased after her, but had to stop when my wallet flew out of my front pocket. I picked it up, placed it back in my pocket, and continued running after her. Her light white dress flew up with the breeze as she skimmed through the many yellow flowers. I got close to catching up to her but she beat me by a couple seconds as we hopped onto the top of the little mountain. We breathed in and out heavily from our sprint. I bent over with a hand on each knee. From the side of my body I felt an impact, and ended up falling onto my back with Kaylee on top of me. I took a couple of breaths that I had lost from the fall. “Why do you always do this to me?”

She laughed, “I like to knock you down and be on top. It’s a new era. It’s time for us girls to run the world.”

I chuckled. “Yes. You girls are intimidating. That’s why I was scared to meet you.”

“You were?”

“Very.”

“Well I’m glad you got the courage to approach me.”

“Me too.” I felt a few small drops of water land on my arms. I looked at the sky, which looked pinkish with the remaining light of the sun glowing onto the puffy white clouds that formed above us. “I think it’s going to rain. Do you want to go under the trees?”

She shook her head in disagreement. “Let’s stay here.” More clouds moved above us and they unleashed their reserves on us with many huge drops of rain. Our clothes became so drenched that they wrapped the form of our bodies. Still on top of me, Kaylee’s wet dangling hair dripped water onto my face. She gently pushed my bangs that covered my eyes to the side, and slowly lowered her face towards mine until our lips met.

Stories Within Stories

I jumped into my old gun metal truck and drove to my late night hang-out, a coffee shop on the top of the hill above my house, after one of those weeks that furiously flew by. I pulled into the parking lot, and right in front of the coffee shop was a prime parking space that was positioned almost directly in front of the main entrance. I pulled the brake and shut off the engine. While patting the dash of my truck, I sent my thoughts of gratitude to it, “Thank you for taking care of me.” I counted this moment as my tenth win for the day.

I pulled my brief case from behind my seat and exited my truck, locking it with my key. My  remote control had long been discarded in a drawer within my personal office. It’s just something I didn’t care to fix after all these years.

I entered the coffee shop and paused by the display glass filled with sandwiches and pastries so I could pull out my smart phone from my front pocket of my jeans and open the app for the coffee shop, which I used for my transactions since you could get rewarded a free drink after a certain amount of purchases.

“Hey Riki, how are you?” asked Kelly, a cute barista with a mixture of Asian and Caucasian ethnicity who I’ve gotten to know over my many visits. She was always so welcoming.

I walked up to her cash register. “Good to be back at the office.”

“What will you get tonight?” Just as I opened my mouth to speak, Kelly blurted, “Wait, let me guess.”

I chuckled. “Alright.”

She closed her eyes and then opened them with a wide smile. “Hot, medium, Green tea latte?”

“Yes. I swear you have a gift.”

“Well, it’s either that or your hot, medium, plain old green tea. So my odds are pretty good in guessing your drink. Tonight you look a bit stressed and that’s when you go for the sweet stuff.”

“You’re really observant. I have to finish drafting a couple contracts for a friend.”

“Got to get paid right?”

“I don’t know. I only get paid if my friend gets paid.”

A frown formed on Kelly’s perplexed facial expression.

“If the deal doesn’t go through, I get nothing for all the work I do.”

“Damn.”

“It’s the nature of what I do.” If only she knew that I didn’t get paid even when I closed some deals with a couple of former business partners I had. I didn’t fight for anything that was owed to me, I just cut my losses and simply moved on.

I flashed my app on the screen of my smartphone in front of the scanner fronting the cash register. After a “beep” sound, I tapped a button and returned my phone back into my front pocket of my jeans.

“Well, I wish you the best on that deal. Have a productive session.”

“Will do. Thank you.”

I proceeded over to the counter where other customers waited to receive their orders. After a few minutes, my order was called by the barista who made my beverage, a young man named Todd with surfer blonde hair.

I strolled over to my favorite corner of the coffee shop where the counters rode along the windows, and lined up beside it were a number of high stools. I placed my briefcase on an unused stool next to me to my right. I pulled out my laptop from my briefcase and fired it up. I opened up a partial draft of one of the agreements I was working on for my friend. I stared at the words on the screen, which began to blur as I dozed off into another world. When my vision cleared up, I was no longer sitting on a stool in front of the window in my regular coffee shop. Instead, I was leaning back on a black leather couch in the more trendy coffee shop with dimmer lights that I’ve become so familiar with over my eight years of writing and reading this scene over and over.

Across the shop I saw Ken sitting at a small square table in front of Kaylee. He had already given her a chocolate cupcake in his attempt to liven up her spirits. He looked just as nervous as I had envisioned. I smiled and giggled quietly because I knew that he was changing the course of the future between the two of them. If only Ken and Kaylee could know how much a part of me has always been with them. Every bit of their pain has been mine, and every time they’ve experienced joy, I’ve felt it just the same. For it’s through their journey that I’m finding my way. If they can make others feel what I’ve felt, then I’m certain many others will find their way as well.

“Excuse me. Excuse me.”

I snapped back to reality and saw a young college-aged Asian girl standing next to me. “Is it okay if I plug my laptop into the outlet?” she asked and glanced under the counter. I followed her eyes and noticed the outlet just to the left of my leg.

“Oh yeah, sure. Go ahead.” I moved off my stool and stood to the side as she plugged in her laptop and returned to sit at a table behind me.

I got back onto my stool and returned to staring at my draft of the agreement on my computer. The minutes kept changing to higher numbers on my clock located near the upper right corner of my laptop, and still, I didn’t write anything new. “Screw this,” I murmured under my breath. I closed the document and opened up my query letter that was addressed to a boutique literary agency based in New York City. I took out my headset from my briefcase and played the songs from my playlist. I bobbed my head to a catchy song “Something Like This” by The Chainsmokers and Coldplay as I proceeded to re-write my query letter.

Vanessa Hudgens Would Be A Top Choice For Lead Female Character In My First Novel

If I were ever so lucky to get my first novel published and made into a movie, a paranormal romance and suspense based in Hawaii, my top choice for the lead female role would be actress Vanessa Hudgens because the lead female character in my novel is Asian and Caucasian like her.  Moreover, she would play the personality of the character nicely who is loosely based off of someone who was once a small part of my life.

To change popular culture in the United States to be more reflective of its diversity, it is very important for writers, producers, and entrepreneurs to develop stories, novels, movies, products, and services that share the unique cultural and ethnic diversity in our country rather than what we mainly see in popular culture in the United States today. It has gotten better, but it still isn’t truly reflective. I’m optimistic that commercialized story-telling will become much broader.

Try

It’s better to try and know, than to never have tried and wonder.

James Altucher

thumb_7151_james-altucher-itunes_1024

James Altucher, an entrepreneur, author, and podcast show host has helped me in my life and career since my friend Ryan Sanada told me to listen to his podcast in April 2015 after my life took a slight downfall.  Altucher’s advice: Generate 10 ideas a day if you can; Idea sex or mix various ideas together; Work with others who have skills and ideas that compliment yours; Take care of your health; and most importantly, “Choose Yourself” – pursue all areas of your passions and dreams.

What makes James Altucher so appealing is his openness to not just his success, but his failures.  He has mentioned how he made millions of dollars and then lost it all; going through divorce; and feeling depressed to a point where he wanted to die. Yet through it all, he comes back and make millions of dollars again, evolves with new business ideas, and networks with other amazing people.

Here’s a link to James Altucher’s website: www.jamesaltucher.com

Also, download his podcast show “The James Altucher Show” and another podcast show that he co-hosts with entrepreneur Stephen J. Dubner called “Question of the Day” where they answer questions and give advice.

They Move in Sync to the Thumping of Our Hearts.

We crawl to the edge and peek over.

The dark blue waves far below us,

crashing against the rocky walls of our cliff.

They move in sync to the thumping of our hearts.

This is how I felt when I first met you.

– Jon Riki Karamatsu, August 10, 2016 –

This song matches my poem.  It’s called “So Good To Me” by Chris Malinchak.

What Is, Is.

What is, is.

What will be, will be.

We can’t dwell on what has happened, and worry about what will happen.

If we do, it will depress us, slow us down, and even kill us.

Good things will happen and so will bad things.

We have to appreciate what we have and focus on what we can control.

By accepting what is and what will be, we can keep moving forward.

To help us overcome our hardships, I dedicate this song to you called “Light It Up” by Major Lazer ft. Nyla and Fuse Dog.

A song that takes us into the worlds where only my characters exist.

When I listen to this song, I can picture us in the worlds where only my characters exist – Walking through a Japanese garden filled with white and pink cherry blossom trees and a trickling stream with a crystal clear waterfall; Dancing to a song on a cliff overlooking the dark blue ocean with two small islands placed in it; Swimming in the warm ocean as the shooting stars streak across the sky; Admiring the snow capped mountains from the white palace’s balcony; and Running and stumbling through the snow past the glowing ice sculptures and into the forest so we can lie on our winter coats to gaze at the stars beyond the evergreen trees.

Death has always loved Life.

Death has always loved Life like a boy who knows he can never be with the girl he loves. Rather than being jealous of us for having Life, he wants us to appreciate her.

Death seeks us because it wants us to appreciate Life.

Death will always seek us. It wants us to acknowledge its presence, and even befriend it. Why? Because it wants us to be aware of our mortality to motivate us to appreciate what we have and what we can do now. So when the time comes, though hard as it may be to leave our loved ones, we can embrace death upon our last breath because we had embraced life.
