I counted 1,400 wins in 2017, the latest practice within my self-development system, an ever-evolving program I’ve used since I was about 10 years old. We’ve written our always-changing plan for our life, New Year’s Resolution, and our daily goals scheduled in our calendars. On top of these plans, I enjoy counting my daily wins, which keeps me moving towards my life goals and annual resolutions, boosts my happy chemicals of dopamine with every accomplishment, and keeps me mindful of all the good that is happening in my life daily, critical to show me that life is good, even during my darkest times. On my last night visiting my sister Mia and her family in the Bay Area, California, I was playing make-believe with my niece Elyse, as we did a number of times while I was there. We gained supernatural powers and met with mystical and magical beings and creatures in various realms. A poison dragon exhaled some poison. I covered my mouth and told my niece that I was poisoned. “No, it’s trying to help you,” Elyse exclaimed. She grabbed a thick book belonging to my sister and read, “It is what it is. And what will be, will be.” I needed to hear those words, and its impact was huge because it came from my 5-year-old niece.

Today was a good day for work. I will be working with a client, an entrepreneur with a one to one and employee coaching company. Submitted a document for support services for the aviation company I’m building with my business partners. The highlight was signing a land deal with a public notary on behalf of my business partners for 15.15 acres for our aviation company. I signed the agreement with my Parker pen, a college graduation gift that I’ve been using since December 21, 1997, which is also the date of my birthday. 2018, here we go!!!

Since April 7, 2015, I’ve been working quietly on a few start-up companies and taking in business clients once in a while that need legal or government affairs services. I often joke to my friends or acquaintances who wonder what I’m up to, by telling them that I’m training quietly at a planet in the outer rim called Tatooine where Obiwan Kenobi and Luke Sywalker were in hiding, and rebuilding the way of the Jedi. On the eve of 2018, I reflect on the things I’ve done in 2017 such as spending time with my family on 83 occasions or days; being with my sister Mia and her family who lives in the Bay Area, California for 12 days, and when apart, video conferencing them 27x with my parents and sister Lara; exercising (running, lifting weights, and swimming) 144x; running 550 miles; finishing the Honolulu Marathon and Great Aloha Run; writing 68,979 words for my 2nd novel; receiving a finalized land deal just before the end of the year that I will sign on behalf of one of the companies I’m building; working on 3 other start-up projects in the preliminary stages that’s slated for launch in 2018; and traveling to Beverly Hills, California in February 2017 for work and San Mateo, California in December 2017 to share the Holiday Season with my immediate family. Excited for 2018!!!

Yesterday, my mom dropped off turkey jook (turkey and rice soup) at my home. I’m super grateful for the thoughtfulness of my mom. I love her! Today, my energy is low, and I’m feeling mentally down even though I received good news early this morning on one of my projects, got a nice email from a new friend and potential business partner, and glad for a couple of decisions I made on two stocks. Yet, I feel down. Strange how we can have these mixed emotions. Thus, my mom’s soup really gave me some comfort today. I will attempt to do some work tonight to lift my spirit! Even when I’m tired, I get up excited to be working on a few projects that I’m passionate about that have the potential to positively impact Hawaii and the Pacific rim with more revenue, jobs, services, and products – maybe even the world. I fear failure, but I learn and develop relationships from both, success and failure, which continues to build my ideas, skills, and network, so like a music producer/DJwho mixes different sounds and talent, I can mix my ideas, skills, and friends across different sectors of our economy to create a different service or product for people to enjoy. When I was a politician, I did the same technique to create or better programs and laws. Building things through entrepreneurship and lawmaking is much more fun than fighting and breaking apart things through litigation, which I also do once in awhile. I recently got an arbitration case closed, which I’m so happy about. Here I am reviewing about 750 pages of documents for one of my projects. Notice I have my good friend, my Macbook Pro. I’m feeling much happier today, September 18, 2017 after feeling anxiety in my personal life and career for the past 11 days or so. At 8:00 A.M., I had the first part of my annual physical at the hospital. Throughout the morning, I was texting my business partners in a different time zone/country. Then at 10:00 A.M., I took the minutes of the Hawaii Buddhist Council (Higashi Hongwanji, Mission of Hawaii, honda Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii, Jodo Mission of Hawaii, Koyasan Shingon Mission of Hawaii, Nichiren Mission of Hawaii, Soto Mission of Hawaii, and Tendai Mission of Hawaii) as it Secretary for 2017. After the meeting, Jodo Mission of Hawaii Bishop Emeritus Gensho Hara gave me a gift. Next, I reviewed and signed an EPA review for the repair and maintenance that we are contracting a Hawaii company to repair and repaint our buildings for Jodo Mission of Hawaii. Also, I reviewed a trust from a deceased member of Jodo Mission of Hawaii who was the secretary for my political influencer, Governor John A. Burns, and she had left some money for our organization.
When I returned home, I received a couple of good news from my business partner who I was texting in the morning in regards to traction for our project. Then I opened my gift from Bishop Gensho Hara, and was so delighted to see this glass display of Buddha. As President of Jodo Mission of Hawaii for 7 years, I was fortunate to have worked with Bishop Hara who served as Bishop for 8 years. He has shared with my so many teachings of compassion, and touching stories of people who have come to his temple at Lahaina, Maui from different walks of life and with diverse ethnicities. They sought refuge from life’s problems, and prayed/meditated for strength to attain inner peace. One 30-something-year-old Vietnamese woman prayed everyday at about 5 A.M. before the large statue of Buddha at his temple, and she’s now becoming a leader of Buddhism on the U.S. mainland. A middle-aged Caucasian male who was a U.S. military veteran of the Vietnam War would visit him, enjoying the rice that Bishop Hara’s wife made. He was sad with the passing of his wife a couple of years ago, and ended up shooting himself to death. It’s these touching stories that taught me the importance of love, compassion, empathy, mindfulness, and gratitude. When I told Bishop Hara that someday, after I make money, I can do more, he would gently shake his head with a slight smile – I understood his gesture, that even our simple acts of kindness can go very far to touch another’s soul. We can spread peace, even without money.

Peace Day Hawaii briefly recognized me for introducing legislation in 2007 to make Hawaii the first State in the U.S. to recognize Peace Day on September 21st. I chaired the organization in 2007, 2008, and 2009.

With Hawaii Attorney General Doug Chin at Peace Day Hawaii 2017 at SGI USA, Honolulu, Hawaii on September 16, 2017. Attorney General Chin and I met at my office when I was Chairman of the Judiciary Committer in the Hawaii State House of Representatives in 2009 when he was First Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for the City and County of Honolulu. Chin made a speech on equal rights. I thanked him for all his work. I’m so proud of him. He’s been defending equality for immigrants from policy moves made by U.S. President Donald Trump. My friend Mari came to Hawaii from Japan and learned hula. Since then, she has done a terrific job in creating a business franchise in teaching hula, while still performing it professionally and modeling. She is also venturing into other areas of business. Her support means a lot to me. Mari is definitely an inspirational entrepreneur, and more importantly, a great friend to have.
