My niece and I riding the open-air bus at San Diego Zoo on 10/17/2018 in San Diego, California. My brother-in-law is behind us, my niece’s dad.
For me, I do my best to spend as much time as I can with my family. My nieces changed everything drastically because time is clearly reflected by how fast they grow up, just like my hair. ๐

In life, we take chances. After studying, learning, planning, and strategizing, we have to take that leap if we want to find out what’s possible. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. Everytime we grow.
– Jon Riki Karamatsu, Haiku Poem #189, 11/6/2018 –
First, we all have problems, death of loved ones, attacks from our opposition and haters, legal woes, financial hardship, broken relationships, bad working environment, and such. To put things in perspective, there are children who are dying because there’s no drinking water. Our problems are tough but we can make it through them.
Second, most people don’t care whether we’re alive or dead. The only ones who do are our loved ones and haters. Avoid the haters and focus on our loved ones.
Third, practice things that counters our anxiety and depression such as but not limited to getting enough sleep, gratitude, exercise, eating well, getting sunlight, going to our happy places, appreciating nature, being around positive people, listening to happy music, writing our hearts out, helping another, meditation, lighting a nice smelling candle or wearing an uplifting scent, having a nice hot or cold shower or bath, working on our passions, and updating our vision board and life plans. I have much more practices that I will share with you in the near future after I finish editing my second novel.
I’m in emotional pain right now so I feel you if you’re going through anxiety or depression. I’ve been through these lows before so I know I can get through them. As mentioned above, I have a long list of practices that I execute to get myself back to my happier levels. I’m with you on your comeback. Sending you my love.

No matter how hard life gets, whether it be financial hardship, a death of a loved one, or a broken heart, we have to do our best to see all the good we have in our life. Day by day as we work at our projects, we get better and a bit closer to our dreams. In person and through social media, we can support one another. We’re in this together.
I took this picture in Waikele, Hawaii on 10/30/2018.
– Jon Riki Karamatsu, Haiku Poem #185, 10/28/2018 –
Have empathy for angry people who limit themselves by their anger into small boxes, but create your dream life in blank spaces where anything is possible, and be happy while they destroy themselves.
– Jon Riki Karamatsu, Haiku Poem #186, 10/28/2018 –
Sometimes we need to cut ourselves off from the noise and hate so we can rebuild and reinvent ourselves. When we return, we’ll have more value and love to offer others and our society in a way where our critics and haters no longer recognize us.
The children of a neverending summer jumping off a stepladder into the ocean. As adults, life can come at us hard. Children remind us to live in the present moment. They clearly define mindfulness by the way they live. Beautiful Haleiwa, Hawaii with my friend Mike who added comments on the moment. We reminisced when we were children. We could relate on how these children felt, not wanting the moment to end, playing until the last drop of sunlight.
We all face stressful events and people. For me, practicing a positive mindset, reframing the stressful events as challenges, exercise, sleep, happy music, reading and listening about positive practices performed by others, creative writing, meditation, and positive relationships help me in maintaining my mental and physical resilience against stress. Here’s a great article on how we can better manage our stress.
This evening I walked 1.5 mile to Office Depot in Waikele to buy printer cartridges, then ran 2.5 miles. Love my Bose Soundsport. Grateful for my Nike shirt from my sister Lara. My shoes, Asics Kayano. Visor, Nike. Exercise plays a big role in maintaining my physical and mental health.
Having enough sleep is important for our mental and physical health. It’s a challenge for me because I’m always thinking, even when I want to sleep. I can read and write for many hours, even until sunrise, which I’m trying to avoid. If I get 7 or more hours of sleep, I add a win to my daily wins journal. I had almost 9 hours of sleep last night, my 70th time sleeping 7 or more hours for 2018.
To distract me from worrying about tomorrow, I work on what I can today.
At times we decline opportunities to pursue our dreams, which causes us stress. I’ve been through it with my political and legal career, and now I’m going through it with my recent goals in the private sector. Focusing on what I can work on now has helped me move forward on my journey, even through the roughest parts. I wish you the best in your journey. I’m feeling you and cheering for you!
Music plays a big role in my life. I listen to instrumental or classical when I need to do deep thinking. To evoke my creativity, I enjoy pop, EDM, alternative, and reggae. When I’m feeling down or stressed, EDM is my favorite. When I think about it, EDM is my favorite for a lot of things: exercise, dance, chores, and writing.
Combined with gratitude, exercise is a powerful practice because it not only develops our body, but our mind. Mental health is key in maintaining a positive outlook, which tremendously supports our career and personal life.
For many of us, dreams and goals make life exciting. ย I enjoy coming up with ideas, expanding my skill-sets, and building relationships. ย However, sometimes in the midst of our hustle to do well in our lives, we forget the importance of having gratitude for what we have now and accomplished thus far. ย We get too fixated on what we want and get frustrated when all our efforts are not taking us there. ย We all love success, but with every dream and goal we pursue, there will be challengesย and even failure. ย Some statistics say 8 out of 10 businesses started will fail. ย Many have pursued the pathย to become a U.S. Senator or President of the United States and have fallen short. ย Others have attempted to reach the highest levels in their field of work but have failed to attain that level. ย Failure is only failure if we don’t appreciate what we currently have and what we have gained. ย Shoot to be number one in the world, but number 50ย is still pretty darn good. ย We can make peace with ourย mind knowing that we didย our best, and won’t have the pain of wondering “What if I had given my idea a shot?” ย Through failure, we gain knowledge in areasย we may have not been familiar with; build new relationships; and even come up with more ideas to pursue. ย With failure, we change and evolve, often leading us to worlds we’ve never experienced. ย When we embrace failure as part of success, weย can keep moving higher to a level where we can keep failingย until we succeed, and keep succeeding until we fail.

Nuggetโs Wisdom: The real reason we donโt move creatively ahead is always and only fear.
Afraid they donโt have talent; afraid of rejection; afraid of criticism.
Nuggetโs Wisdom: I have no desire to become a fearless person.
Only people who are fearless are psychopaths and toddlers.
Fear is a necessary companion.
Fear is the reason why weโre alive today. Fear protects us.
Nuggetโs Wisdom: Creativity will always provoke your fear.
Acknowledge the importance of fear and invite it along. Iโm just writing a poem. Itโs not life or death.
Nuggetโs Wisdom: You canโt let fear have control over your creative choices.
Fear can shut your creative choices one by one. No donโt do that โ No, too risky.
Nuggetโs Wisdom: Guaranteed itโs already been done, but itโs not yet been done by you.
40,000 years of the art and pretty much itโs been done before.
Shakespeare borrowed stories and told them in a way thatโs never been told before.
Artists have always been responding to stuff but you can add to the pile.
What moves me is the humanity in the authentic piece of creation. My heart and mind has changed. The world looks different.
โAll love eventually becomes help.โ Inspired by Paul Tillich.
You will radiate a thing that people wants to be near.
Every pursuit comes with a shit sandwich. What do you love but willing to eat the shit sandwich?
7 years of rejection letters. Are you willing to still eat the shit sandwich?
Even when you succeed, your shit sandwich will be media criticism, people criticism, etc.
Is this still better than nothing doing it? If yes, then youโre on the right path.
Nuggets of Wisdom: People murder their creativity by insisting theyโre not truly creative unless their creativity pays the bills.
Jump and the net might catch you. What would do even if failure wasnโt a word youโre thinking of.
You may or not get everything you want.
Donโt be fixated on how much money your creativity makes. You work on your creativity because you love to work on it.
Donโt get so battered that you lose your house, family, etc. that you shut down and never want to work on your creativity.
Be child-like, not childish. Donโt be childish โ I want it and I should get it. People get rage, resentment etc. for failure. Doย be child-like and be open to creativity like a child.
I wish there was a shortcut for personal and spiritual growth, relationships, health, but thereโs not. It takes a lot of work.
Nuggets of Wisdom: Perfectionism is a serial killer.
I donโt want to be perfect, I want it to be finished.
Thereโs a lot of good unfinished work.
If your standards are so high, youโll never finish you work.
The contract I made was to be a writer, not a good writer.
I promised the universe that I would be a writer, not a good writer.
I donโt want to go to my grave with 50 pages of an unfinished novel.
If you donโt like it, go write your own fucking book. And you know what, you wonโt.
Nuggets of Wisdom: What will make you finish it is not discipline, but self-forgiveness.
Forgive yourself for not doing well.
Iโm not Hemingway, but Iโll keep trying.
Nuggets of Wisdom: Thereโs no better thing to spend your life doing that saying yes to that invitation.
When did inspiration promise you anything – other than the amazing experience you have dancing with it for some time? Inspiration will watch you fall off the cliff and smile and ask you, โDo you want to do it again?โ
Find ways to cushion the fall. Despite the pain, one of these days, you will say yes to inspiration again.
You will create something that you love and then you may hate it later. You love it and you dismiss it. Itโs okay.
Itโs not a baby. Itโs just a thing I made. People will criticize it, attack it, hate it.
Itโs independent of you. Your creativity was making you as you were developing it. When you finish it, forget about it.
Nuggets of Wisdom: There are two kinds of creators in the world: the martyrs, and the tricksters.
Reject the martyr way. I will do this even if it kills me.
Trickster: I didnโt come here to get hurt.
Tricksters do things in a transgressive way. They play with things, turn things upside down. Down have to treat things as a holy way.
Trickster trusts the universe. Put it out there and see what happens. Donโt be so heavy. Thereโs no one way.
We live in a take, take world. Whenย ourย energy is drained to the point where ourย health begins to fade, it’s time to pause to review our life and then make the changes necessary to recover.
To combat this, we have to focus on thoseย who fill usย with positive energy and who truly care for who weย are. We also needย to work on what we’re passionate about and provide value that helps others. Somehow,ย whenย we do this, good things come back to us.
With innovation, hard work, relationship-building, and a relentless pursuit of success, comes a higher level of jealousy, envy, and scrutiny. It doesn’t matter how good our intentions are. We are often told that we knew what we were getting into. The message is clear: If we wanted to avoid such negativity, we should’ve settled with an average life. But that message goes against everything that our parents and teachers taught us – that we can go as far as we want to go.
I believe that we should continue to pursue our dreams and develop friendships that last a lifetime. We must keep working hard to create products and services through our ideas. If others want to judge us by extraordinary standards, then we just have to live super extraordinary lives.
Though I’m no longer serving in the public sector, I will do my best to help Hawaii and America’s economy through the companies that I’m a partner of. In the spirit of the music events business that I’m involved with, here is an uplifting song “We Don’t Stop” by Kaskade that encourages us to keep doing the best weย can in ourย pursuit of happiness.
At times, our greatest enemy is ourselves. Our negative thoughts push aside our positive ones, which in turn,ย affects our actions and everything around us. We get hard on ourselves for our failures when there wasย so much that we gained from taking that journey.ย We dwell on the past and what we don’t have, when the future is so bright with endless possibilities.ย We mourn the dead even though they never did leave us. Meanwhile, there are so many people who love us, and many more who are cheering us on to make ourย next move. So why stay still and let the darkness consume us? We have to make our move, and then another, and then many, many more.ย The future is relying on what we do now. To maximize what’s ahead of us, we need to be alive in the here and now. By practicing gratitude and compassion, we can transcend past our fears and into the light of happiness.
Below is a song called “Spirits” by the Strumbellas that reflect my feelings in my journal entry above.
As I mentionedย in my “Positive Living Practice and Stages Practice” post, I’m creating a Positive Living Practice series thatย highlightsย products and services that can help us with our health, wealth, and happiness so that we can live a happy and fulfilling life. By “health,” I mean good physical, mental, and spiritual health. For “wealth,” I define it as time, knowledge, and ideas. And “happiness” is the wonderful joy we get from gratitude, compassion, and love.
Today, I’m discussing a challenge that we all face within our lives – “Stress.”ย Have you ever receivedย another person’s wrath because of that person’s weakness in not being able to handle his or herย stress? Or worse, have you ever directed your anger at another person and blamed your bad behavior because of the stress your were going through?
How often we experience stress is within our control.ย I personally believe that 99% of all challenges we face are either minor or can be resolved. In regards to theย 1% of challenges that we can’t control, we can become stronger by accepting it, learning from it, and moving on.
Studies have shown that stress can cause us emotional and physical problems. Further, if we manageย it in the wrong way, we could hurtย our relationships and reputation. Instead of handling stressย in a destructive way that hurts ourselves and others, we can address it in a positive way that spreads waves of positive energy to others. In this post, I will share with you my strategies to reduce stress. I also include a poster on how to beat stress and boost happiness by Happify, a company that helps you to develop happiness skills through its online activities and articles. You can check out Happify at http://www.happify.com.
If we can reduce stress, we willย be healthier physically, mentally, and spiritually; and be stronger in our practice ofย gratitude, compassion, and love. With good health and happiness, we can make the best use of our time, absorb more knowledge, and come up with more ideas.
The following are some of the things thatย I like to do to reduce stress:
Exercise: Run indoors or outdoors and lift weights.
Dream of what I want to achieve.
Type my ideas.
Write down and update my goals.
Envision the outcome of my goals.
Listen to music.
Spend time with my family.
Be around positive people.
Have gratitude for all the good things I have in my life.
Meditate.
Self-Reflect.
See the positive in every failure.
Try to get a good sleep and take a nap when I need a boost.
Listen to podcast shows that highlight positive and successful people.
Write fictional stories.
Read novels.
Learn through reading or practice.
Watch a television show or movie that inspires me.
