Work at Starbucks

In the afternoon of Saturday September 2, 2017, I moved my work from my home to Starbucks in Waipio, Hawaii. I gave it a shot to try and finish an analysis on another redline of the contract for our land deal. I spent 4.25 hours, but it looks like I have to continue later. My energy level has been boosted though. I love my Apple MacBook Pro, which allows me to work anywhere and anytime!!! Let’s go some more!!!

My Attempt to Build Energy and Motivation

This morning of Saturday September 2, 2017, I’m trying hard to build energy and motivation to analyze another redline of our agreement for a land deal for a company my partners and I are building. I have a birthday party tonight, and tomorrow I have a Jodo Shu service and board meeting, a community event with my family, and my weekly Skype with my sister Mia and 2 young nieces, thus, I want to try to get it done in 3 to 4 hours today. I had about 7 hours of sleep, so to add to the energy I got from my sleep, early this morning, I exercised at 24 Hour Fitness in Mililani, Hawaii – weightlifting and running the treadmill. Then I cooked up some breakfast: bacon; omelette with 3 types of cheddar cheese, onion, bell pepper, and my homegrown green onions; brown rice with furikake; and Ka’u coffee. I keep telling myself for nearly 2 years on this project that the sweat, tears, and struggle will be worth it. I’m grateful to have this opportunity. Let’s go!!!

Is Peace Forever Elusive?

Is peace forever elusive? It seems, so long as there are humans, there will always be those who hurt others emotionally and physically. Yet, it is the energy of negative people that fires up the power of those who are positive. With bad people, as much as their acts feels terrible, they make the world more challenging and gives the good people a greater purpose. If the world was perfect, we may take things for granted because there would be less bad experiences to compare to, and there would be no need for heroes. So long as there are people who harm others with words or might, it is the hero in all of us who will keep the world tipped towards compassion, empathy, and love.

How Many Stars Will I Kill Tonight?

How many stars will I kill tonight?

Thousands if I let my dark voices in with no fight.

Quel my fears with a lasso I can hold.

Yank them to the side, and focus on the things I can control.

Cherish everything that brings me joy.

Sure tomorrow can be great,

but right now is what I must appreciate.

Sleep and My Awesome Simmons Bed

Sleep is key to our physical and mental health. It provides us the energy to exercise, work, and enjoy the day. Sleep also gives us the energy to overcome challenges. When I bought my place in 2003, I purchased a Simmons plush bed, which has foam and isolated pocket springs that has great back support and isolates movement, allowing me to continue to sleep even with movement on the other side. My bed is so comfortable.

Chester Bennington of Linkin Park & My Thoughts on Facing Darkness

Chester+Bennington+2007+Projekt+Revolution+EsDFKpXLMkjl

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Chester Bennington of Linkin Park on July 20, 2017 at the age of 41.  He was also the lead singer for Dead By Sunrise and fronted Stone Temple Pilots from 2013 to 2015.  His voice had a great range for melodic top 40 tracks to the hard screaming sounds of rock and roll that sometimes blended with rap by Mike Shinoda, the other frontman of Linkin Park.

20108632_10155459201961788_3382217805980587612_n

Chester was authentic and open about his life, the struggles of his childhood when his parents became divorced, being sexually abused by an individual older than him, and getting bullied in school.  He let out his frustration and suffering in his art and music.  Much of his struggle resonates in the lyrics of the songs he helped write and through the sound of his voice.  However, Chester also turned to drugs and alcohol to numb his pain.  Even with his rise into a rockstar with amazing bands, he faced depression until he took his life.

chester-bennington-linkin-park-timothy-norris

As a politician in Hawaii, I worked on the issues of bullying, sex abuse, drugs, and mental health.  I continued with some of this work while a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney and Legislative Liaison at the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney of the City and County of Honolulu.  I left public service after being charged by the police for driving under the influence when I was stopped at a roadblock.  Half the time I served in public service, I felt like I was dealing with power trips of politicians and judges, many with temper tantrums who were unable to put the issues above themselves.  Now, I direct my efforts in helping the community through start-up business ventures, business law, and nonprofit organizations.  If I succeed in building the businesses that I’m passionate about, I want to dedicate my money on causes that I’ve failed to achieve as a politician and government attorney such as building a peace curriculum in our schools to teach our children positive daily practices to reduce bullying, sex assault, verbal abuse and physical violence; and helping orphans of war receive water, food, medicine, clothes, toys, and an education.

The death of Chester by suicide hit me emotionally.  I’ve been listening to Linkin Park since their beginning.  I’m listening to Linkin Park songs as I write this post.  I know the power of the darkness can haunt us, especially when we’re alone.  At night and early morning is when they attack me. When they win, nothing matters – nothing.  I know this.  I live because I’ve created so many goals to work on.  I work hard – so hard that it pushes away my pain – that is until I’m alone, then I have to start all over again.  But I can’t just live by working.  I want to love and be loved.  I want to have fun.  For these reasons, I created a system of practices I created that helps me to keep moving forward through gratitude, peace, and happiness.  If you are facing anxiety and depression, these are the things I do to counter the darkness:

(1) Sleep – For maximum output, 7+ hours of sleep works for me.
(2) Exercise – Run, lifting weights, and swimming are some of the exercise I do that gives me a high and a feeling of confidence that I can achieve anything.
(3) Healthy Diet – Foods that have Vitamin B-complex and Vitamin C helps us against depression and anxiety. L-Theanine in green tea has a calming affect.
(4) Gratitude – I have gratitude for not just the big things, but also the many little things.
(5) Mindfulness – I live in the moment to be aware of the beauty and wonderful things around me. Mindfulness is what energizes our gratitude. The more mindful I am, the higher the level of my gratitude.
(6) Win-Win/Positive Thinking. There are wins in everything we do, even failure and bad incidents.
(7) Goals – I plan and execute my goals by a system that rewards small wins and big wins. It’s the process of the daily practice that gives us a rush of dopamine every time we achieve small wins, and in time, we get that satisfaction from attaining our big wins.
(8) Writing – Blog, journal, social media, fiction, and nonfiction. Writing is so therapeutic, and it feels good to send positive messages to my friends and network.
(9) Positive Relationships – Stay near positive people who will fire you up with good energy, and avoid negative people who drain your energy.
(10) Music – Soothing music is great while working, and when you need a lift, play a lively song and dance.
(11) Read and listen about amazing people – Exposure to people who overcame huge challenges keeps me motivated and thinking extraordinary with a mindset that anything is possible when you consistently work hard, build relationships, and learn.
(12) Go to your happy places – My happy places are beaches in Hawaii for relaxation and coffee shops for work.
(13) Ocean Therapy and Nature – For me, swimming in the ocean does wonders by heightening all my senses and revitalizing my vision for my life.
(14) Sunlight – Vitamin D3 from the sun helps us against anxiety and depression.
(15) Sensory Therapy – I enjoy lemon scented cologne, vanilla and lavender scented candles, hot and cold showers, and massages.
(16) Learn – Right now, I enjoy learning about subjects such as self-development, health, writing, Japanese language and culture, aviation, fuel, Iraq war, and orphans of war.
(17) Meditation – This practice calms my mind, body, and soul.
(18) Travel – Experiences at other locations creates wonderful memories and recharges our mind, body, and soul.
(19) Read Fiction – Experience other lifestyles and locations, feel the beauty of love, and do extraordinary things.
(20) Inspirational Movies and Television Shows

The following song, “Shadow of the Day” by Linkin Park expresses how I feel about the loss of Chester Bennington and the darkness that haunts us all.

Here is “Heavy” by Linkin Park, another song that moves me emotionally.

“Numb” by Linkin Park is a song that resonates with the frustration we feel after working so hard to be who we are, only to be attacked by others who want something, and punished harder by others because of who we’ve become, despite us still being human.

“Sorry For Now” by Linkin Park

“Nobody Can Save Me” by Linkin Park.  On a positive note, near the ending of the song, the lyrics goes:

I wanna fall wide awake now
So tell me it’s alright
Tell me I’m forgiven, tonight
And only I can save me now
I’m holding up a light
Chasing up the darkness inside
And I don’t wanna let you down
But only I can save me!

Been searching somewhere out there
For what’s been missing right here

I want to end this entry with a positive and motivational song by Linkin Park, “Battle Symphony.” Chester will live on through his music, loved ones, and fans. My heart goes out to him and his loved ones.

Always Forgive

My friend and mentor, Hawaii Speaker Emeritus Calvin K.Y. Say and I back in 2010, speaking to a Chinese organization in Honolulu, Hawaii.  “Always forgive,” is what he told me in my early years as a politician when I was being attacked by opposition and negative people. This advice has stayed with me. Keep moving forward with peace!

Gratitude is a powerful practice.

In life, we will have happy times, but there will be periods of challenges whether it be deaths of loved ones, illness, financial hardship, difficult relationships, bad work environments, spiteful law suits, violence, and/or prison time or penalties because of false or inaccurate statements. Gratitude is a powerful practice that helps us to always be mindful of all the good that we have in our lives. Through gratitude we can proceed through even our darkest days with the things we can control such as time with positive loved ones, exercise, meditation, writing, learning, passionate projects, helping others, and other positive things that keep us high above the things we can’t control, like negative events and people. Gratitude keeps our energy positive with love, compassion, and empathy that helps us rise over anxiety, sadness, and anger. Positivity spreads when we share it with others. Some of the most beautiful pictures of light occur when it pierces through darkness. Likewise, gratitude makes us appreciate the light or good even among darkness. I took this peaceful picture of sunlight glowing around the dark clouds at Haleiwa beach on July 6, 2017. If you have challenging times, I hope this post helps you to still appreciate and enjoy life. May peace be with you. With Warmest Aloha, Jon

Great article on 7 steps to be happy.

Great article on 7 steps to be happy. Here they are with my interpretation and input! Strive for a great day everyday!

  1. Have something to look forward to: Plans with a friend or a treat for yourself such as nice dish or dessert.
  2. Manage your mood: Do what gives you a feeling of control. Avoid doing things that throws your emotions off, save it for later in the day.
  3. Eat breakfast: Studies show that breakfast makes us feel emotionally happier.
  4. Do something you dread: Getting something done that is challenging or has been bothering you provides a sense of accomplishment.
  5. Send a “thank you” email or text.
  6. Plan how you’ll deal with challenges: Think about the worst that could happen and it probably won’t but if it does, you will feel prepared and ready to handle the issue.
  7. Kiss somebody you love: I don’t have anyone to kiss so I’ll pretend. When I do have someone to kiss, I will definitely kiss her whenever we go our separate ways.

Win-Win Thinking!

Like many of you, I strive for things that have a great amount of uncertainty that create anxiety and stress. I wish I was a superhuman, immune to such feelings but I’m not. So I make an effort on overcoming anxiety and stress with many practices like gratitude, mindfulness, win-win thinking, exercise, balanced diet, writing, music, nature, time with positive people, sensory therapy, meditation, and such. Whenever I work on any of my goals that has a high risk of losing time and money such as elected politics, business projects, and fiction and nonfiction books, I try to mitigate my risk with research, strategy, and hard work, but no matter what, a degree of uncertainty will always exist.

To alleviate my anxiety on the uncertainty, I practice win-win thinking or positive thinking by telling myself, “When I invest time and money into a project I’m passionate about, at worse, I get a higher education like attaining another college degree. At best, I get a return on my investment on top of my education!” By looking at my goals in this manner, I see the outcome as a win no matter what the outcome because my time and money are used towards bettering myself in gaining more knowledge, skills, and relationships, but if I succeed, I can get a higher education and make a living out of what I love! Stay positive everyone!

Jon Morrow has been paralyzed from the neck down since birth, but despite his challenges he has done amazing things in his life including creating multi-million dollar businesses.

Linked below is one of the most inspiring interviews I’ve listened to. Entrepreneur, author, and podcast show host James Altucher interviews Jon Morrow who has been paralyzed from the neck down since birth, but despite his challenges he has done amazing things in his life including creating multi-million dollar businesses.

I cried several times as I listened to this podcast interview late one evening earlier this week while I was laying in my bed in the dark, in my attempt to sleep. Jon Morrow is such an inspiration.

When he was a very little boy, he almost died a number of times because his disease caused him to get pneumonia, and because his lungs were so weak, his mother would push down hard on his chest to get the mucous out of his lungs so he could breathe and survive. However, by doing this, young Jon was in great pain because his ribs got fractured by his mothers’ pressure.

At [26:25] of the interview,  Jon stated: “When I got into kindergarten, another kid called me disabled, and I said, ‘What does that mean?’ And, he started laughing.” Jon’s teacher came over and said, “You don’t know what that means?” He didn’t. So he asked his mom. She thought about it and said, “It means you can’t do something as well as someone else. But it also goes the other way.” She said, “Everyone in the world can’t do something as well as someone else…” So everyone in a sense is disabled. Jon took inventory of his skills. Then he mastered them.

Later, Jon almost died from a multi-vehicle accident. He went through a lot of pain and surgeries. In another bad turn of events, Jon had been successfully raising multi-millions of dollars for his father’s development company but the company went down after the 2008 market crash and at that time, to make it worse, his mother lost her job. Despite these challenges, he went to Mexico where he could get better healthcare than the United States and spent long hours day after day in developing his online training and education companies in regards to finance, writing techniques, blogging, online web development, online marketing, etc. With great effort and perseverance, in combination with his prior years of work and blogging, Jon mixed his various skills and experiences to successfully launch his companies.

How do we deal with negative people?

How do we deal with negative people? My practice is to stay professional with them, do what we have to do, and get out as soon as we are done. Negative people are not happy with their lives so they take it out on others, or are numb to other people’s feelings. Sure, they swear and yell at us, or do bad things in front of us or behind our back, but the best way to live is always with positivity and happiness. Surround ourselves with positive people and the law of attraction will do its part. Hopefully, in time, those who are negative will awaken and find peace within themselves, and in turn share empathy and compassion with others. #peace #innerpeace #empathy #compassion #positivity #positiveliving #quote #quotes #awakening #awakening #karma #lawofattraction #forgive #forgiveness #buddhism #bodhisattva #awaken #nirvana #happiness #love #practice #habits #habit #domesticpeace #worldpeace #aloha

Gratitude Prayer and Meditation.

IMG_20170419_115449_197

I like to do a gratitude prayer to the universe in the morning, followed by a meditation. I start off by lighting a pair of candles on a display with stones and an oil diffuser. Then I start an app on my smartphone that plays soothing sounds of water and calming instrumental music.

In my gratitude prayer, I express my thanks for my loved ones, the ability to experience life, useful things I have, the beauty of nature, and much more. Throughout the day, I would continue to be thankful for many things.

I meditate by clearing my thoughts and breathing slowly. After some minutes in emptiness, I envision what I will accomplish for the day.

To practice this, all you need is ten minutes, but you can always go longer. It’s a good way to start your day with positivity and clarity. Sometimes I do a gratitude prayer and meditation at night or whenever I need to stabilize my soul after facing some challenges. There are studies that show how gratitude and meditation practices reduces stress and benefits your overall health. Have fun with your gratitude and meditation practice! Aloha!

The light is so much brighter when we’re in the dark.

The light is so much brighter when we’re in the dark. For it is darkness that makes us appreciate the light. The challenges of life and the evils of humankind should make us even more grateful for what positive things we have in our lives, and the many good people there are among us. Let the force of darkness motivate us to maximize our daily practice of love and compassion.

Sending my warmest aloha,

Jon Riki Karamatsu

Path to true love may start with your BFF

Path to true love may start with your BFF. With Valentine’s Day near, here is a nice CNN article on how important it is to have an intimate partner who is also your best friend. According to the article, “Friends enjoy spending time together, share similar interests, take care of each other, trust each other and feel a lasting bond between them. It isn’t a coincidence that these all happen to be qualities that also define successful intimate relationships.”

Tim Ferriss on Depression and Thoughts of Suicide.

Linked below is an article on depression and suicide by Tim Ferris, an entrepreneur, investor, author, and podcast host who has studied and practiced self-improvement strategies and techniques that we can all incorporate into our daily lives in our quest for happiness. He is well known for his book “The Four-Hour Workweek” and his latest book “Tools of the Titans” is in the market.

All of us from time to time will face challenges that will make us sad, hurt, disappointed, and even angry. However, Tim Ferris, like my other favorite entrepreneurs/self-improvement coaches James Altucher and Marie Forleo – they encourage us to practice daily habits that make us positive and productive human beings.

In this article, Ferris wrote:

Most “superheroes” are nothing of the sort. They’re weird, neurotic creatures who do big things DESPITE lots of self-defeating habits and self-talk.

Here are some of my coping mechanisms for making it through the day:

1) Wake up at least 1 hour before you have to be at a computer screen. E-mail is the mind killer.

2) Make a cup of tea (I like pu-erh like this) and sit down with a pen/pencil and paper.

3) Write down the 3-5 things — and no more — that are making you most anxious or uncomfortable. They’re often things that have been punted from one day’s to-do list to the next, to the next, to the next, and so on. Most important usually = most uncomfortable, with some chance of rejection or conflict.

4) For each item, ask yourself:

– “If this were the only thing I accomplished today, would I be satisfied with my day?”
– “Will moving this forward make all the other to-do’s unimportant or easier to knock off later?”

5) Look only at the items you’ve answered “yes” to for at least one of these questions.

6) Block out at 2-3 hours to focus on ONE of them for today. Let the rest of the urgent but less important stuff slide. It will still be there tomorrow.

7) TO BE CLEAR: Block out at 2-3 HOURS to focus on ONE of them for today. This is ONE BLOCK OF TIME. Cobbling together 10 minutes here and there to add up to 120 minutes does not work.

8) If you get distracted or start procrastinating, don’t freak out and downward spiral; just gently come back to your ONE to-do.

9) Physically MOVE for at least 20 minutes each day. Go for a long walk, lift weights, take a free online yoga class (YouTube), anything. Ideally, get outside. I was once asked by friend for advice on overcoming debilitating stress. The answer I repeated over and over again was: “Remember to EXERCISE daily. That is 80% of the battle.”

10) Follow a diet that prevents wild blood sugar swings. This means avoiding grains and refined carbohydrates most of the time. I follow the slow-carb diet with one cheat day per week and have done so for 10+ years. Paleo also works great. Don’t forget to eat plenty of fat. High protein and low fat can give you low-grade symptoms of rabbit starvation.

11) Schedule at least one group dinner with friends per week. Get it on the calendar no later than 5pm on Monday. Ideal to have at least three people, but two is still great medicine.

12) Take a minute each day to call or email someone to express gratitude of some type. Consider someone you haven’t spoken with in a long time. It can be a one-line text or a 5-second voicemail.

Congratulations! That’s it.

Those are the rules I use, and they help steer the ship in the right direction.

Routines are the only way I can feel “successful” despite my never-ending impulse to procrastinate, hit snooze, nap, and otherwise fritter away my days with bullshit. If I have 10 “important” things to do in a day, I’ll feel overwhelmed, and it’s 100% certain nothing important will get done that day. On the other hand, I can usually handle 1 must-do item and block out my lesser behaviors for 2-3 hours a day.

And when — despite your best efforts — you feel like you’re losing at the game of life, never forget: Even the best of the best feel this way sometimes. When I’m in the pit of despair with new book projects, I recall what iconic writer Kurt Vonnegut said about his process: “When I write, I feel like an armless, legless man with a crayon in his mouth.”

Don’t overestimate the world and underestimate yourself. You are better than you think.

Tim Ferris’ link to his article is here: https://www.google.com/amp/tim.blog/2015/05/06/how-to-commit-suicide/amp/

“Failure” and “success” are both wins because we made an effort to embark on a journey by working on an opportunity. What makes “failure” and “success” both a win is when we appreciate what we’ve learned, the skills we’ve developed, and the people we’ve built relationships with. So even on our hardest day when we feel worthless, like Ferris wrote, we can list the things that are making us anxious, and choose to work on that one thing that would make us feel accomplished for the day and make all the other things on our list less important or easier to knock off later. Exercise, meditate, write our goals down, listen to music, take a walk, spend times with positive friends, or do an activity that will boost our happy chemicals and make us feel more accomplished. The small wins and accomplishments mean a lot, because when we achieve many of these small wins, we will eventually achieve the huge wins! On our goods days, we could rack up a dozen or more wins a day, but on our toughest day, even if we just make an effort to accomplish one very important task, that is a super huge win – huge!

Sincerely,

Jon Riki Karamatsu

Dogs teach us about unconditional love and gratitude.

We humans can learn a lot from dogs such as unconditional love, loyalty, and mindfulness. Dogs appreciate the present moment, one of the key teachings in Buddhism, in that we must have gratitude for our lives, loved ones, and opportunities.  With gratitude, we can overcome the challenges of life, and achieve peace and happiness for a great majority of our precious life.

James Altucher

thumb_7151_james-altucher-itunes_1024

James Altucher, an entrepreneur, author, and podcast show host has helped me in my life and career since my friend Ryan Sanada told me to listen to his podcast in April 2015 after my life took a slight downfall.  Altucher’s advice: Generate 10 ideas a day if you can; Idea sex or mix various ideas together; Work with others who have skills and ideas that compliment yours; Take care of your health; and most importantly, “Choose Yourself” – pursue all areas of your passions and dreams.

What makes James Altucher so appealing is his openness to not just his success, but his failures.  He has mentioned how he made millions of dollars and then lost it all; going through divorce; and feeling depressed to a point where he wanted to die. Yet through it all, he comes back and make millions of dollars again, evolves with new business ideas, and networks with other amazing people.

Here’s a link to James Altucher’s website: www.jamesaltucher.com

Also, download his podcast show “The James Altucher Show” and another podcast show that he co-hosts with entrepreneur Stephen J. Dubner called “Question of the Day” where they answer questions and give advice.

Sometimes “Doing” Does Nothing

Entrepreneur and Author James Altucher wrote a nice article, which is linked below my article. Mr. Altucher wrote, “The world doesn’t need more DO-ers.”  He also stated, “Stillness ultimately creates, Doing often destroys.”

Sometimes “doing” does nothing such as having meetings that have no new information or purpose, just rehashed things that were already in motion. There are times when “doing” is destructive such as having a meeting where people are offended or where we cannot commit to an action because we didn’t complete the preceding tasks yet. At times, waiting on action such as actions by the government or investors can be a good thing because new investors and opportunities pop up that could never have happened had things progressed faster. Patience is a key to success when “doing” does nothing.

Like A Child, I Create Another Dream and Do It All Over Again.

My sisters are princesses. My nieces are now princesses. They rule the world. Since I was young, I’ve wanted to save everyone from evil. I keep coming up with ideas and mix them with other ideas – some good and some bad. Then I pursue them until I live my imagination. But every now and then, my fantasy comes crashing down. Like a child, I create another dream and do it all over again.

Multiple projects and issues are jumping around in my head.

Multiple projects and issues are jumping around in my head while calls and messages keep coming in. So much so that I made an error the other day on one of my tasks. Studies have shown that multi-tasking reduces our performance. It’s much better to focus on one task at a time to maximize our output and results.

multitasking-o

With all the different projects and goals that I have to accomplish, I think my mind is going as fast as this song “Alone” by Marshmello.

Death has always loved Life.

Death has always loved Life like a boy who knows he can never be with the girl he loves. Rather than being jealous of us for having Life, he wants us to appreciate her.

Death seeks us because it wants us to appreciate Life.

Death will always seek us. It wants us to acknowledge its presence, and even befriend it. Why? Because it wants us to be aware of our mortality to motivate us to appreciate what we have and what we can do now. So when the time comes, though hard as it may be to leave our loved ones, we can embrace death upon our last breath because we had embraced life.

Power and Money.

Power and money will attract the good and the bad. The bad get worse with their desire for it, and they get even worse when they get it. People are only around them because they have to. However, when the bad get taken down, without power and money, they lose their identity, and no one wants to be near them anymore because there’s no reason to be.

With or without power and money, the good stay the same. Power and money don’t define them. Its love and compassion that attract people around them.

To all of you getting yelled at in your careers, attacked by greed, judged by your success, and laughed at for your failures, stay positive with your love and compassion. We all love you and are cheering you on.

Anytime, you’re feeling down because of negativity, play the song below “Hype” by Calvin Harris and Dizzee Rascal because there will always be a hype around you, and we all need that special gift that only you can bring to this world!

Note: This type of concert would be fun in Hawaii!

Lyrics of “Hype” by Calvin Harris and Dizzee Rascal:

Top of the roster
Real deal, you can see it in my posture
I feel like Leo with a Oscar
The price just changed, no sour, it’ll cost ya
And I’m not an imposter
My style don’t borrow or foster
My enemies will not prosper
Seems like every time they take a shot they hit the crossbar
And I move like Neymar
Them boys ain’t even on my radar
I do my own stunts, no saviour
That’s why I gotta stunt so major
They say I go mad for the paper
I think I need a shrink and a tailor
But I do not think about failure
I’m a star, I should get my own trailer

Hype!
Every time I’m around there’s a hype
Touchdown and the crowd get’s hyped
Straight gassed, got the whole place hype
I’m a bad boy and I do what I like
Every time I’m around there’s a hype
Touchdown and the crowd get’s hyped
Straight gassed, got the whole place hype

[Beat break]

Hype
Every time I’m around there’s a hype
Touchdown and the crowd get’s hyped
Straight gassed, got the whole place hype
I’m a bad boy and I do what I like
Every time I’m around there’s a hype
Touchdown and the crowd get’s hyped
Straight gassed, got the whole place hype

[Beat break]

Straight gassed, got the whole place hype

I’m so legit
I do not slip, I just stick to the script
Fully equipped, there is no stopping me
I do not quit, I do not cip
Ready for action, I’ve gotta be physically fit
Sit-ups and burpees and dips
Gettin’ a grip and it’s making me physically sick
Somehow I still get a kick

Hype
Every time I’m around there’s a hype
Touchdown and the crowd get’s hyped
Straight gassed, got the whole place hype
I’m a bad boy and I do what I like
Every time I’m around there’s a hype
Touchdown and the crowd get’s hyped
Straight gassed, got the whole place hype

[Beat break]

Straight gassed, got the whole place hype

Hype
Every time I’m around there’s a hype
Touchdown and the crowd get’s hyped
Straight gassed, got the whole place hype
I’m a bad boy and I do what I like
Every time I’m around there’s a hype
Touchdown and the crowd get’s hyped
Straight gassed, got the whole place hype

Consistency

Since I was young, I’ve been setting goals and then practicing, studying, and doing whatever it takes everyday to achieve the smaller goals in order to reach my larger goals.

As a young soccer player in elementary school, I wasn’t big and strong like some of the other players.  I did have quickness and speed, but to better myself, I had to train everyday on my ball handling skills and playmaking skills.  I read books, watched videos, and practiced with the soccer ball everyday at parks, in my yard, and even in the house.  Eventually, over the years, when I reached high school, I made it to the select teams I wanted and was recognized with awards.

Likewise, to become a politician, I started training to be a politician from my teens by studying political science and then later law, volunteering for politicians at their office and for their campaigns, joined the Young Democrats, business organizations, jaycees, and even got appointed to the Pearl City Neighborhood Board.

When I ran for the Senate and then Vice President of the Associated Students of the University of Hawaii at Manao (ASUH), I would post my posters at 1 A.M. to 3 A.M. in the morning, go to sleep, and then wake up at 6 A.M. to pass out my fliers that had my goals for the university to student commuters walking onto campus from the parking lot and students walking onto campus from the dorms. In between classes I would pass out my fliers to students walking through the mall on campus, with some of them avoiding me by walking around me and onto the grass.  At lunch breaks or in the evening, I spoke to the various student organizations about my campaign and what I was going to do for them.  I went door-to-door at the dorms passing out easter eggs that my mom and I wrote my name and office on, and I posted my posters on dorm doors of my supporters.  I did this for months and was successful in winning a Senate seat in ASUH in 1996 and then the following year, the Vice Presidency.

While in college, in 1996, I typed out my campaign plan and gathered all the necessary information to run for a Hawaii State House seat or Hawaii State Senate seat in Pearl City that was so thick that I had to put it into a binder.  After campaigning a number of small political races and even mayor and governor races, by 2002, I was ready to launch my own campaign for the Hawaii State House, but all the Pearl City races had an incumbent.  However, the Waipahu, Waikele, Village Park, and Royal Kunia district had an open race due to redistricting.  I moved to Waikele and re-typed my entire plan to fit this district. Over the years, I had collected contact information from family, friends, and acquaintances and built a database, which I used to raise $16,000.  I mailed three mailers and walked the district 3 times, which is over 18,000 homes over a period of 7 months and lost 20 pounds and burned holes into my pants because of the constant rubbing of my bag that held my campaign material.  Like my college student government elections, people told me they voted for me because of my ideas and their respect for my hard work.  Over my 8-year political career, I walked my district over 10 times, which is over 60,000 households.

In soccer and politics, I consistently worked hard mentally and physically until I was fortunate to reach my goals.

As far as my career in law, consistency in my studies and efforts helped me to make a comeback after I received bad grades and was placed on probation while attending the  University of Hawaii at Manoa.  I had a 3.2 GPA but it plunged during a time when I broke up with my first girlfriend.  My college counselor asked me what I wanted to be, and I told her, “a lawyer.”  She looked at my grades and then looked back at me and asked, “Do you like helping people?”  I answered, “Yes.”  She continued, “How about being a social worker?”  I smiled, unable to agree with her.  After that I made my comeback by getting 4.0 grades for several semesters and if I did fall short, I had a 3.8 grade point average for that semester.

Now, after leaving the public sector in April 2015, and pursuing a number of projects in the private sector, either on my own or with business partners, I’m facing a lot of hardship.  Some projects had to end, while others keep moving forward.  Everyday, I make sure I work on tasks that will add up in helping me and my team in achieving a larger goal.  A couple of projects are getting close to fruition – just need to get past a few more walls.  It’s exciting and depressing at the same time.  Sometimes you’re enthusiastic, while other times you want to cry.

I try my best to surround myself with positive and inspiring people like my friend Brandon who is always upbeat and optimistic.  Basically, he’s my life coach.  My mom is my number one supporter who has encouraged me to try many things since I was a child.  My father’s tenacious style of work ethic has rubbed off on me as I relentless push forward despite my failures.  A girl I know who’s from Japan came to Hawaii to learn hula, and now has 4 halaus in Japan and performs and teaches in Hawaii.  That would be like me going to Japan to learn sword fighting and the Japanese language, mastering it, and creating schools back in Hawaii.  She’s an inspiration to me.  My business partners for my various projects always find a positive point even when things are going bad, just like how my mom taught me to look at a glass half-filled as half-full rather than half-empty.

Below is a video by Marie Forleo, an entrepreneur who I’m inspired by, and in it she recommends 5 things to do to stay committed on your goals.

  1. Keep your eye on the “why.”  Why you want to do what you do?
  2. Pick your battle.  Pick one thing and stick with it.  Don’t try to do everything at one time.
  3. Schedule it.  Schedule your priorities.  Build you life around your priorities.
  4. Ignore your feelings.  Ignore the voice in your head that cries and says, “I don’t feel like it.”  Override that voice because you know the power of consistency.
  5. Catch that wagon.  Don’t have an all or nothing mindset.  You will fall off the wagon.  Just run and catch that wagon.

“Success doesn’t come from what you do occasionally, it comes from what you do consistently.” – Marie Forleo.

Here is a song called “Try Everything” by Shakira to inspire you as you consistently pursue your goals, whether it’s for your career, health, or personal life.  My wish for you is to be happy in this life and the next!  I’ll celebrate with you at the finish line, no matter what place we come in!

To Do or Not To Do?

In life, we often come across opportunities or get involved with something that seems good, but it’s out of our comfort zone. We can analyze the pros and cons, get opinions from others, and follow our intuition.

Sometimes our situation will be more obvious when red flags start popping up everywhere and people advise you to stay away or leave. At other times, there may not be any noticeable problems for us or anyone to analyze. In either situation, we will get an intuition, if not at that earlier moment, it will occur along our journey.

Marie Forleo, an entrepreneur, life coach, and author said it best in her Youtube Show Marie TV that is linked below, “Do you feel expansive? Or do you feel contracted?” Does your shoulders open up and do you feel excited? Or does your body pull in, your head start to shake, where you dread about it?

Our body doesn’t lie. When you talk about something you shouldn’t do, you start to look pasty and depressed. But when you’re excited about what you’re working on, you light up like a Christmas tree.

Great advice that we can apply in our lives and career.

Punching in a Dream.

I really like this band, The Naked and Famous.  I’m feeling the lyrics.

They’ll get through.
They’ll get you.
In the place that you feel it the most.
When you’re cornered.
When it’s forming.
In the place that you wish was a ghost.
