Preparing the otobas for obon services for Jodo Shu Hawaii.

This morning of Sunday July 7, 2019, members and friends of Jodo Shu Hawaii set up the otoba for obon services. This year, the set up is in the social hall because the outdoor structure we had was getting old and was large and heavy so the amount of manpower needed was hard on our aging volunteers. The otobas have the names of our loved ones who passed away. Obon services and Bon Dance is a special time when our ancestors are with us, though we pray to them throughout the whole year so they’re always with us. I’m serving my 9th year as president and 14th year as a board member of the organization. 😊

Get ready for the new kids!

Who are we to know what’s right?

Even as adults we’re still trying to figure out our own life.

Get ready for the new kids.

They’ll rise, they’ll fall.

No matter what, they’ll find their way through it all.

– Jon Riki Karamatsu, Poem, 5/31/19 –

Every older generation seems to criticize the younger ones. We can guide the younger generations in a positive way, but in the end, the children will choose their own destiny by trying, failing, and succeeding on their interests and passions.

We control our own destiny, and influence those coming up. The children are our future. They learn by observing us adults. If we yell and scream all the time, they’ll become adults yelling and screaming at their family and at people at work, maybe even at strangers in the public. Peace starts with us, and it continues with the legacy we leave behind by those who were influenced by us. Let’s choose kindness, love, empathy, and compassion to make our world more peaceful!

With Warmest Aloha,
Jon

Death has been a strange friend of mine. I love death as much as I love life because death has taught me how to live.

I think about death every day. It has been on my mind since I was brand new to this world. A time when I could count my age with one hand. I remember thinking about it when my uncle Dwight had died. I asked my dad, “What happens after you die?”

He answered, “When you die, you die, that’s it.”

I went to my bedroom and cried on my bed. With the urging of my mom, my dad came to my room and told me that there’s a nice place where people go to after they die.

Understanding my impermanence has been my greatest motivator ever since. I go all-out on every passionate vision that crosses my mind. I’ve tried so many things because of it. I had some nice experiences and some not so nice experiences, but one thing’s for sure, I have no regrets. I would rather try and fail than to not try and wonder what if I had given it a shot? And for the times I did win, man it’s an indescribable feeling of euphoria where you’re so happy you cry in a higher realm because of all the suffering you went through in order to achieve your goal.

No matter how bad life can be, as long as we’re alive, we can still do a lot of damage. You’ll never know what your limits are unless you push yourself to break them. When you befriend death, you love life more. You don’t waste time on petty things many people complain about. Nor do you hate and judge others. These negative types of people may only realize the most important things in life when they face their own imminent mortality if they are lucky enough to have some time to think before they die.

With this state of mind, death has been a strange friend of mine. I love death as much as I love life because death has taught me how to live.

The Internet exposes who we already are!

The Internet exposes who we already are! If we’re angry and judgmental, it shows. If we’re compassionate and empathic, others feel it. If we’re authentic and vulnerable, we become even more real to others. Don’t fear being broken. At some point in our lives, we all are. Let the perfect and judgmental people stick together in their own world. Together, in our authentic tribe, we rebuild and rise again! I’m honored that we can connect on the Internet from all over the world! I love you all! Keep crushing it!!! 😃👊❤

Peace is my purpose.

Peace is my purpose.

I became a lawyer and politician with this goal in mind through the laws and programs I created or supported.

I enjoy business because #commerce can connect people when a great value is provided.

I love writing fiction because you can touch the souls of people by evoking their emotions through the struggles your characters go through. If you can make a reader have compassion and empathy for a character they would have disliked or even hated but for the story, then you’ve played a small role in bridging the division created by human judgment. Such stories can be adapted into audio and visual form such as audio books and movies to reach a greater audience.

Nonfiction writing can play a role in our self-development in not just our career but our personal development to attain inner peace. If all of us are at peace, the world will be at peace.

So what do you think about attaining world peace? If we break it down into bite size pieces and work on ourselves and help others every single day, it’s possible right!

May peace be with you! Sending you positive energy!

With Warmest Aloha,
Jon

I’m hopeful that love, compassion, and empathy will overcome anger, hate, and discrimination. Together, we’ll make this world better!

Being a 5th generation American on my mom’s side of the family and 4th generation on my dad’s and born and raised in Hawaii where there is a mixture of ethnicities with no majority, I was surprised to experience discrimination in Eastern Washington when I lived there and Idaho where I frequented with my law school friends for snowboarding and events. In Idaho, on a snowboarding trip, my law school friends Paul from Hawaii (hapa: Caucasian and Japanese), Joe from Southern California (Filipino), Marx from New Orleans, Louisiana (Jewish), and I went to a venue where we weren’t served. Not quite sure if my friend Karlin (Inupiak Eskimo and Caucasian) was there since he snowboarded with us. Also, in Cour d’alene, Idaho, on 4th of July, white supremacists drove by in their 4×4 trucks and jeeps yelling bad stuff with their Confederate and Nazi flags. Our country, the United States is not doing too well on these issues with a number of very public incidents.

My late great uncle Roy Okubo, my late grandma Bessie Karamatsu’s baby brother enlisted in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, 522nd Artillery during World War II to prove the loyalty of Americans of Japanese Ancestry despite the racism and mass imprisonment done by our country.

When I became a politician in Hawaii, I pushed for equal rights for all, including legislation for gay marriage for the LBGT community and support of programs for single mothers and survivors of abuse. My political career has been overshadowed by my legal bouts with driving under the influence. Thus, now, I’m directing a good portion of my energy towards writing fiction, nonfiction, poems, and creative writing, on top of my business projects and legal career. Through stories, we can touch people’s souls by reaching into their emotions. Laws can’t do this in the way storytelling can. I’m hopeful that love, compassion, and empathy will overcome anger, hate, and discrimination. Together, we’ll make this world better!

Lovely Angel of Darkness

Lovely angel of darkness.

Why do you seek me?

Your smile weakens me.

Your words break me.

Is there a way to light up your heart?

Don’t let the darkness tear us apart.

Growth Mindset

I’m a strong believer in having a positive mindset in order to be happier and more fulfilled in life.  In this post, I would like to point out the importance of us having a growth mindset, which is believing that our abilities and intelligence can be developed.  We can develop our knowledge and skills by reading and practicing everyday.  The more we work on our knowledge and skills, the better we get.  If we keep up this daily practice, over time, we may attain the knowledge and become very good at the skills we envisioned ourselves achieving.

I like to schedule in my Google calendar blocks of time to learning and building skills and I color code them according to the subject matter.  I count each 30-minute period of learning or practicing as a “win” in my Count My Wins program I created for myself.  This program gives me a natural high from the happy chemicals released when I finish each 30-minute self-development session. I’m a very curious person so I push myself even in areas I’m unfamiliar with.  I really want to become a better person mentally, spiritually, and physically.

Have fun in your self-development!  Crush it!

3 of my daily practices: growth mindset, mindfulness, and gratitude.

(I took a picture of these plants and trees in Waikele, Hawaii on March 12, 2019. They represent growth in our growth mindset practice. I’m always mindful of the beauty around me. I’m grateful to experience such simple pleasures.)

From the Middle, Suffering Expands Our Gratitude Practice!

From the middle, suffering expands our gratitude practice by making us more present and aware of the light in a mass of darkness, which is all the good things we have in our lives. Here are my 10 examples of how suffering can expand our gratitude practice:

1. When a loved one dies, we’re grateful for the time we had with that person.
2. When our romantic relationship falls apart, we’re grateful to have had the opportunity to experience romance.
3. When we fail at a goal, we’re grateful for the lessons we learned from the failure.
4. When we face financial hardship, we’re grateful for every little thing we have that helps us get by.
5. When we provide value for others and get attacked by opposition or critics, we’re grateful for our ability to create value for others and evolve.
6. When facts in litigation aren’t believed where we face fines, jail, or unfavorable rulings for business, divorce or our personal life, we’re grateful that we had the opportunity to tell what happened.
7. When we can no longer drive a vehicle, we’re grateful for public transportation.
8. When our health declines, we’re grateful for still being alive and having what abilities we still have.
9. When we are wronged by people, we’re grateful for all the positive people in our lives.
10. When our life appears to be in turmoil, we’re grateful that we were born to even have a shot at life.

3 of my daily practices are shown here: the middle way, gratitude, and listening to music (Im wearing Bose Soundsport)!

Live the middle way. From the middle, we can see the light in every dark situation.

Live the middle way. From the middle, dark and light is one. From the middle, we can see everything, dark, light, and everything in between. If you can see the light in darkness, then you can be grateful in your darkest moments.

Humans are prone to judging others and experiences. From the middle, you don’t jump to conclusion that someone is either dark or light, good or bad. From the middle, you don’t jump to conclusion that an experience is dark or light, good or bad.

When a person lashes his or her anger at you, you’re tempted to label that person as a dark person. When you’re in the middle, you’ll see the light, in even the most hateful person. You go deeper and have empathy for that person who may have suffered deeply at the hands of others.

When you experience suffering, you may feel tempted to label it as darkness, which will drag you further down into sadness, frustration, and/or anger, all negative emotions that pushes away your happiness and negatively impacts everyone you interact with. From the middle, you’ll be able to see the light in even the most darkest of situations.

From the middle, suffering expands our gratitude practice by making us more present and aware of all the good things we have in our lives. Here are my 10 examples of how suffering can expand our gratitude practice:
1. When a loved one dies, we’re grateful for the time we had with that person.

Fade Out or Keep Going?

Fade out or keep going? What are we chasing after in this competitive and sometimes cruel world? Money? Power? Fame? When you reach it, you get attacked by others and punished more severely. Is it worth it? I think most of us want to be happy and at peace. There’s something beautiful in fading out from the craziness of society to be with your own soul in a peaceful and quiet life. Maybe live a simple life near the ocean or up in the mountains. It sounds so nice to meditate, read, research, write, create art, produce content that helps others, build a service for others using technology, and only hang out with those who lift your spirit. I’m not saying to completely cut ourselves off from the world. We could still continue our hustle to create value for others from afar, only coming back to society for our loved ones and for our most passionate projects. Do you feel this sometimes? If this was possible would you try it?

This is a picture of the sunset in Waikele, Hawaii on 2/19/19.

Learn, Hustle, Live With Patience, & Be Grateful!

Since I was little, my mom and dad encouraged me to try different things, learn, & work hard. You never know, anything is possible. You may live your dreams. Some of mine came true, like becoming a politician, practicing law, building businesses, & helping nonprofits with a mission of peace within ourselves & the world.

However, when you take a chance on a dream, a vision, a value you want to share with others, you put yourself at risk of failure, criticism, & even hate. I get most of my anxiety worrying about whether I will fail or if someone will attack me or my organization. Most of these anxieties are about things I can’t control. To lessen this darkness that slows down my progress & deflates my happiness, I practice what I can control: (1) Always keep learning & building new skills; (2) Hustle like I’m a fiercely determined soccer striker with #7 on the back of my jersey, practicing my craft everyday so I can play for that championship title; (3) Have patience in the process, as I understand many big goals take years to achieve; & (4) Be grateful from the moment I wake up until I sleep. I appreciate the chance to be alive, all the good things in my life, the lessons of my failures, the ability to learn new things, Hawaii, travel, & my loved ones.

It’s not always easy. We all have our down days. Yet, tomorrow is always another day to crush it! And yes, with a positive mindset, we can achieve great heights & fill our lives with happiness a vast majority of our time. So attack your dreams! Learn, hustle & live with patience. Most importantly, be grateful for your shot at life & all the wonderful things around you!

With Warmest Aloha,
Jon

My Cousin’s Wedding Rehearsal Dinner

My entire immediate family and most of my extended family attended the wedding rehearsal dinner for my cousin Laura at Alamo, California on 10/14/2018.

I have to make it clear, that I’m nothing if it weren’t for my parents and sisters. Now, I have my three nieces who inspire me to keep hustling on creating value for others and making our world more peaceful. On top of that, I’m lucky to have great uncles, aunties, and cousins. I love them all.

Who Cares If I Die?

Falling from the sky

into the depths of darkness.

Who cares if I die.

– Jon Riki Karamatsu, Haiku Poem #189, 11/6/2018 –

First, we all have problems, death of loved ones, attacks from our opposition and haters, legal woes, financial hardship, broken relationships, bad working environment, and such. To put things in perspective, there are children who are dying because there’s no drinking water. Our problems are tough but we can make it through them.

Second, most people don’t care whether we’re alive or dead. The only ones who do are our loved ones and haters. Avoid the haters and focus on our loved ones.

Third, practice things that counters our anxiety and depression such as but not limited to getting enough sleep, gratitude, exercise, eating well, getting sunlight, going to our happy places, appreciating nature, being around positive people, listening to happy music, writing our hearts out, helping another, meditation, lighting a nice smelling candle or wearing an uplifting scent, having a nice hot or cold shower or bath, working on our passions, and updating our vision board and life plans. I have much more practices that I will share with you in the near future after I finish editing my second novel.

I’m in emotional pain right now so I feel you if you’re going through anxiety or depression. I’ve been through these lows before so I know I can get through them. As mentioned above, I have a long list of practices that I execute to get myself back to my happier levels. I’m with you on your comeback. Sending you my love.

With Warmest Aloha, Jon

Isolation

I love this song “Beggars in the House of Plenty” by Generationals. The video has nice footage of a U.S. Senate committee hearing led by the late U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii. Hawaii and the United States isn’t the same without him. I miss my grandparents; the 100th Battalion & 442nd Regimental Combat Team of World War II that my great uncle Roy Okubo was a member of who fought against fascism overseas and racism in America; the members of the 1954 Democratic Revolution who changed the discriminatory laws in Hawaii; the late Hawaii State Senator, 442 veteran, attorney & my mentor Nadao “Najo” Yoshinaga; and all my friends of this great generation.

Tired of the vindictiveness of policymakers, judges and haters, and to stay away from alcohol since I’m a social drinker, I isolated myself from anything public for 3.5 years whether it be charities, politics, or social gatherings. I’m slowly becoming involved with public service again by supporting some of my positive friends who need to be in government to keep the negative people out of power who will feed into the hate and anger that is being taught to the younger generations. It’s hard to stay away from politics, my second love after soccer. It’s a love that will never die.

Like the song says, isolation is a two-way street. We all need it sometimes to look within ourselves, to find ways to better ourselves and the world. When we make our comeback we’ll crush anything before us with all the might of love, compassion, and empathy.

Love My Aquarium!

Didn’t sleep much. Replaced the lights and cleaned my 55-gallon tank in the early morning. Got several Neon Tetras in it.

My Last Moments

I stood on the top of the ridge and admired the beautiful green trees swaying far below with the wind. The last of the blue skies were painted over with shades of gray. Ahead, dark clouds were sweeping in like an angry predator. They swallowed peak after peak and kept coming for me.

I calmly inserted my headphones in my ears and played my favorite song. The happy tune brought me a smile. My time here would be over soon, but I was content. All that came to my mind was my mom, dad, sisters, nieces, family, and my closest friends. It’s funny how we spend much of our lives building so much, pushing through all the problems and terrible people that seemed so important to do back then. Yet, in the last moments of our lives, all we think about are the ones who really mattered. Memories of joy with them came blasting in like a movie in fast forward. You see their faces and then you’re gone.

Sleep is Important

Having enough sleep is important for our mental and physical health. It’s a challenge for me because I’m always thinking, even when I want to sleep. I can read and write for many hours, even until sunrise, which I’m trying to avoid. If I get 7 or more hours of sleep, I add a win to my daily wins journal. I had almost 9 hours of sleep last night, my 70th time sleeping 7 or more hours for 2018.

I work on what I can today

To distract me from worrying about tomorrow, I work on what I can today.

At times we decline opportunities to pursue our dreams, which causes us stress. I’ve been through it with my political and legal career, and now I’m going through it with my recent goals in the private sector. Focusing on what I can work on now has helped me move forward on my journey, even through the roughest parts. I wish you the best in your journey. I’m feeling you and cheering for you!

With Warmest Aloha, Jon

Build Value and Peace

Our “why” is what will motivate us to provide value for others.

Our desire to learn and ability to work with others will give us the “how.”

Our daily work and patience towards the long game will determine our “when.”

The above is our sweat equity for our vision.

If . . . no, when we build our own abundance of capital, we can add it to our sweat equity to power a value-making system that creates jobs, services, and products for others.

Another influential practice for a human is to always be mindful and grateful, and consistently loving, compassionate, and empathetic towards all beings and the universe. Enlightening oneself to transcend beyond the suffering of life and death.

Building value and peace. May they both be with you.

Solitude, Deep Self-Reflection, and Meditation

Solitude, deep self-reflection, and meditation can bring us great power by opening up our energy towards the basics of our existence: love, empathy, compassion, mindfulness, and gratitude, which transcend our physical existence. Everything else is either a bonus or unnecessary noise.

Happy Place and Peaceful Walk

Walked home at 11 P.M. on March 6, 2018 after Starbucks closed. There’s a peacefulness in walking alone while listening to an educational podcast after a day’s work at a place that helps me to attain a level of peace, happiness, and productivity.

Death and Life Threatening Illnesses

Thinking of my loved ones who passed away, and those of you facing life threatening illnesses. If I spent five days in prison in order to have them back for a moment or to take away your suffering from killer diseases . . . I look within myself to find clarity. Love you all.

Attended Memorial Service for Miyono Shimoda and Thomas Okubo.

This afternoon of Monday February 19, 2018, I attended two funerals.  The first was at 5:00 P.M. for Mrs. Miyono Shimoda held at Jodo Mission of Hawaii where she was an active member.  My mom and I greeted the family.  As President of Jodo Mission, I represented the organization in placing incense in the incense holder to pay respect to Mrs Shimono as Bishop Yubun Narashiba and Rev. Kanjun Nakano chanted.  My grandparents Maurice and Bessie Karamatsu were friends with her and her late husband Robert “Bob” Shimoda.  I got the opportunity to spend time with Mrs. Shimoda when we volunteered at Jodo Mission of Hawaii, who was always very nice.  She passed away at age 96, and will be missed.  It saddens me to see the friends of late my grandparents leave.

At 6:00 P.M., my mom and I joined my dad to attend the funeral of Thomas Yukio Okubo at Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary, my dad’s cousin on my grandma Bessie Karamatsu’s side of the family.  He was a construction manager for Mitsunaga Associates, and passed away at 65 years old, a young age for our time period.

I feel vulnerable.  The impermanence of my existence and those I know becomes more and more real with each passing day.

Let the old religion that develops killers die with us.

The Jedi religion creates killers. So does our societal system, as it provides the knowledge and skills needed for one’s selfish desire to rise to power just for the almighty feeling of having control. Like Luke Skywalker, maybe we need to detach from the current practices and instead, seek the middle within us, that calm and peaceful zone, just as the thousands of Bodhisattvas and Buddhas attempted before us. Let the old religion that develops killers die with us.
