You can have a meaningful life through your attitude!

You can have meaning in your life through your attitude! If you have a positive attitude, you can find meaning in your life even under difficult circumstances.

Do all you can to have a positive attitude, a super power that will help you through your darkest times.

Having a Meaningful Life – Part 3 of 3. ❀

You can have meaning in your life through your (1) creativity, (2) experiences, & (3) attitude. ❀

Today, we highlight how your attitude has a role in attaining meaning in your life. If you have a positive attitude, you can find meaning in your life even under difficult circumstances. The foundation of this 3-part article is from Dr. Victor Emil Frankl (1905-1997), an Austrian neurologist, psychiatrist, & Holocaust survivor. He was able to have meaning in his life despite going through the horrors of being imprisoned in a Nazi death camp. His father died of illness & his mother, brother, & wife were killed by the Nazis. Dr. Viktor Frankl’s tragic optimism focuses on (a) affirmation of the meaning & value of life, regardless of circumstances; (b) acceptance of what cannot be changed; (c) self-transcendence in serving a higher purpose; faith in others & in something beyond our realm; & (d) courage to face adversity. πŸ™

The following dialogue between Dr. Frankl & his patient, an elderly, depressed man who could not overcome the loss of his wife shows the depth one’s attitude has on one’s meaning in life:

Dr. Frankl asked, “What would have happened if you had died first, & your wife would have had to survive you?” πŸ’”

“Oh,” replied the patient, “for her this would have been terrible; how she would have suffered.” πŸ’”

Frankl continued, “You see such a suffering has been spared her; & it is you who have spared her this suffering; but now, you have to pay for it by surviving her & mourning her.” The man said no word, but shook Dr. Frankl’s hand & calmly left his office. ❀

This conversation brought tears to my eyes. My friends, no matter what you’re going through, no matter how tough it is, you have the ability to see the light & keep moving forward. ❀

You can have meaning in your life through your experiences!

You can have meaning in your life through your

Experience things that brings you joy!

Having a Meaningful Life – Part 2 of 3! πŸ‘Š

You can have meaning in your life through your (1) creativity, (2) experiences, and (3) attitude. Let’s go over experiences. πŸ˜ƒ

In addition to your creativity, you can have meaning in your life through your experiences, both good and bad. For instance, when you complete a challenging goal, say running a marathon after a year of training, you feel extremely good! Maybe you spend many months teaching a child math skills. When you see the child solving the math problems, you feel joy! 😊❀ πŸ€—

Even when you fail at something, you can gain more meaning in your life. Although your failure is emotionally painful, you can become more driven to make your comeback. You try harder or reinvent yourself by trying new things. You learn, grow, and evolve from your failure so you can succeed again! πŸ™Œ

You can have meaning in your life through your creativity!

Having a Meaningful LifeΒ – Part 1 of 3! πŸ‘Š

In the mission statement of Positive Masters, we want you to be happy & have a fulfilling life. One of the key points to achieving this, is to have meaning in your life. You can have meaning in your life through your (1) creativity, (2) experiences, & (3) attitude. In this article, let’s discuss creativity. πŸ’‘

When you create a value for yourself & others through a service or product, you have purpose. If you’re passionate about that service or product, then even better because your work doesn’t feel like work because you enjoy doing it.Β You ever notice how time passes by smoothly & quickly when you’re working on something you’re passionate about? Notice how your focus on your passionate project pushes away any of your worries &/or sadness. You’re in the flow! This is the greatest state to be in to create value for yourself & others. For me, writing this article for you gives me great joy! 😊❀

Fun Homework: Write down 10 things you enjoy that could provide value for yourself & others. Then write down 10 ways or variations on how to execute on your creation of each of those 10 things you enjoy. There may be a company or non-profit organization that you could join to create those passions of yours. If not, you could create a new company or non-profit organization to provide this value. Have fun on this! ✍ πŸ’» πŸ“‘ ✌

Monkey Mind has been a part of our DNA for survival since the primitive days of the human race. However, we now live in a time where our daily threats are often our fear of failure in our careers and relationships. A saber tooth tiger is not after us every day. Then there are those days when my Monkey Mind takes over. β€œYou’re not good enough,” he taunts. β€œYou’ve never done this before. Heck, no one has done this before. The haters are going to attack you. Play it safe. Do what you know. Do what you’re already good at.β€Β πŸ΅

I counter him, β€œGet out of my head Monkey Mind! I can learn. I can reinvent myself. If I fail, I’ll still gain skills, knowledge, & relationships. What I’m creating isn’t for the haters, it’s for my tribe, those who want to be happy & have a purposeful life. I’m being me, the best I can be!” 😫

Be present to absorb the beauty around you!

Live in the present an absorb all the beauty around you!

Practice mindfulness every day to consistently be aware of the beauty around you!

Mindfulness is a simple and powerful daily practice to boost your happiness. Simply be present to enjoy all the good things around you. Wherever you go, look around to enjoy the sight. Here’s a beautiful picture of the trees, plants, sky, and clouds in Waikele, Hawaii as I walked to the coffee shop. The contrasting colors are amazing! πŸ˜ƒ

How to be productive when you’re anxious about your problems.

Be productive and crush your anxiety by being present, letting go of things you can't control, working on one thing at a time.

Be present, let go of things you can’t control, and work on one thing at a time that you can control!

Productivity is something I’m constantly working on. On some days, I’m in the zone. Everything flows. I get amazing ideas! I’m able to figure things out rather smoothly! And importantly, I execute on a significantΒ amount of work!

Then, there are those days when my problems overwhelm me, stagnating my ideas, overwhelmingΒ my willpower to overcome issues, and slowingΒ my progress on work.

To increase my productivity on my challenging days, I do the following, which helps me tremendously:Β (1)Β Be present and put aside my fear of what may or may not happen tomorrow;Β (2) Focus on what I can control; and (3) Work on one thing at a time.

Being present keeps me in the moment. I can’t see the future, nor can I fully control it, so why should I waste more of my time worrying about it?

Second, I let go of thinking about things I can’t control.Β Instead, I redirect myΒ focus on all the things I can control that’ll move me forward towards my vision of where I want to go.

Then I get myself to startΒ working on my small tasks that I can control, one at a time. Once I finish a task, I feel much better. Then I complete another task, causing my mood to feel even better, so I keep going. EachΒ little win really packs an awesome power boost of positive energy! Further, completing all these small goals are huge because they add up over time! This is the power of compounding many small wins!

When you try to look back in time, a lotΒ of our problems seem much smaller. In fact, you may not remember every single detail of all the issuesΒ that bothered you.Β However, you can see clearly before you, all the work, knowledge, and skills you developed from that time period.

On your bad days, just focus on 1 to 3 of the most important things that you need to get done that day and execute on them!

Here’s an article I wrote for Positive Masters at www.positive masters.com, an e-commerce store that provides lifestyle practices, creative writing, apparel, accessories, and fashion to boost your happiness and counter any stress, anxiety, and sadness you may be facing.

When times are difficult, focus on one to three of the things that if you complete, you will fill much better.

On your bad days, just work on 1 to 3 of the most important things that you need to do, and more importantly, by completing them, you know you will feel better. That alone is huge!

On some days, you wake up with less motivation to attack your day. Maybe you’re stressed about the overwhelming amount of work you have to do. Maybe you’re down because things aren’t going as you planned? You’re wondering if something will or will not happen, causing you angst. Are you worrying about a relationship, the break-up of one, or being lonely? The death of a loved may have hit you hard. Maybe it’s because someone yelled at you at work or the critics are attacking you. Heck, it could be all of the above.

You turn off your alarm, wishing you could fade away into a wonderful dream where you’re smiling and sipping a favorite beverage as you overlook the glisteningΒ blue ocean with puffy white clouds floating through the teal blue skies. Aaaaaahhh, that would be wonderful!

No, you can’t do that. Not now. So you drag yourself out of bed and freshen up. Then you return to your bedroom and make your bed to get your first win of the day. You tell yourself, “No matter what happens today, I can make my bed, and when I return, it’ll be welcoming me!”

You execute on your favorite practice, gratitude. “I’m so luckyΒ to be alive to have a shot in this universe,” you say to yourself. You’re mindful of all the useful and memorable things in yourΒ home and express yourΒ gratitude. As you make yourΒ breakfast, you use your late grandma’s plate and quietly express yourΒ thanks as you think of your grandma. You see items from yourΒ other late grandparents and yourΒ parents, causing positive energy to pour into your soul.

With yourΒ breakfast, you drink green tea for its benefits such as L-Theanine to calm yourΒ anxiety and mellow its caffeine, which gives youΒ the calm type of clarityΒ that you need.

In addition to yourΒ mindful and gratitude practices, you do a quick self-reflection on all the good qualities you have and how you’re going to apply them to get closer to your dreams of your future. On your worse days, you meditate to clear yourselfΒ of all yourΒ negative thoughts.

Okay, Now you’re ready to take on the day. However, you powerΒ up your computer and stare at it. Damn, you feel nothing.

You ever feel like this? I do. We all have these challengingΒ days because we’re human. We can’t expect to always have those awesome days when ideas flow smoothly and problems getΒ resolved rather simply. Those terrificΒ days when you put in 10 hours of fulfilling work that didn’t feel like work because you were enjoying the process.

On yourΒ bad days, just focus on 1Β to 3Β of the most important things that you need to get done that dayΒ and execute on them. That’s all you have to do. When coming up with the 1 to 3 things you need to work on, don’t add up many tiny tasks, instead, lump them into broad categories to fit into those 1 to 3 things you need to complete for the day. It’s psychologically beneficial to simplify what you need to do. We’re telling ourselves, “I got this. I can do this.” Don’t allow the gloomy side of your mind to sabotage your plan by overcomplicating and even exaggerating the work you have before you. For that day, you don’t have to achieve a million things, onlyΒ on those few key goals you set for yourself. Accomplishing these goals, even if they’re little are huge because every single accomplishment will add up over time. Getting those few things done will also boost your happy chemicals. Praise yourself for this accomplishment!

This is a part of the process of what I do to keep myself moving forward on my not so good days. It works for me. If it can help you in some way to feel better on your terrible days, it would make me happy!

Play It Safe or Go For Your Vision?

[I wrote this article at www.positivemasters.com, an e-commerce website that provides lifestyle practices, writing, apparel, and accessories to boost your happiness and counter any stress, anxiety, and sadness you may be facing.]

Play it safe or go for your vision? With planning, research, and strategy, you can lessen your risks in pursuit of your dreams!

Choosing a career that’s relatively safe, although no job is truly safe, may bring peace for you. However, you may have that itch to do the things you’ve always wanted to do, but there’s a higher risk of failure and attacks from haters and critics. The question is, “Will you regret not giving a shot at your dreams?”

You’ve got one shot in your life, make the most of it! The fact that you’re born into this world and still alive reading this article, demonstrates how lucky you are. Scientists estimate that the chance of you existing are about 1 in 4 hundred trillion. That’s crazy odds! Not only are you lucky, you’re a one of a kind with your own personality and way of thinking. This makes you lucky and special!

When I was young, my parents made my two younger sisters and I try many sports and activities. From there, my sisters and I gravitated towards certain sports and community organizations that we enjoyed and had an interest in. My sisters and I continue to do this as adults, trying new things for our careers, community, and personal lives. We push ourselves into uncomfortable territory, but find pleasure in learning, developing skills, and building relationships. However, by exposing ourselves to risk, the greater potential of failure and criticism can be stressful. I’ve had my share of failures. I see failure as part of the process to learn, grow, and evolve. Everyone has a different stress tolerance so its good to assess your goals and strategize on how to execute them. By writing your thoughts and research down, you get a better feel of the system you’ll create for yourself, the daily work placed into your calendar that you’ll need to accomplish in order to get to your various stages of your vision. By doing this, you mitigate some of your risk.

Further, the risks you take to fulfill a dream you have is not going to kill you, unless, you’re planning to do something that risks your life. Yet, your animalistic fears still get triggered when you get anxious of the future such as whether your project will fail or whether you’ll be attacked and ridiculed by critics. You feel like a saber tooth tiger is pursuing you. Your mind can blow your fears out of proportion. Focus on what you can control and don’t let the uncontrollable things take you down. When you succeed, all the worries will be for nothing. If you do fail, you’ll learn, and then pivot to make your next moves, evolving as you proceed on. Either way, you still gain a lot a value: skills, knowledge, and relationships that will propel you forward!

Even if the world is unkind, the greatest war is in your mind.

[I wrote the following article for +positive masters+ at www.positivemasters.com, an e-commerce store that provides lifestyle practices, creative writing, books, apparel, accessories, and fashion to boost your happiness and crush your anxiety and depression.]

With a positive mindset, we can be more happier and face difficult situations with more grit.

Much of our happiness and suffering is determined by our mindset.

History has shown how resilient humans can be, even under very difficult situations. Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela, and Daniel K. Inouye are a few examples of individuals who accomplished so much to make our world better despite mental and physical challenges weighing against them. πŸ‘Š

With a strong will and an understanding of what you can and can’t control, you will accomplish great things by working on your small wins day by day! πŸ˜ƒ

Deep Breathing, a Remedy for Stress, Anxiety, & Anger.

[I wrote the following article at www.positivemasters.com, an e-commerce store that provides lifestyle practices, creative writing, books, apparel, accessories, and fashion to boost your happiness and crush your anxiety and depression.]

Relieve stress, anxiety, and anger with deep breathing!

It takes years to build a good reputation, yet, it takes only a moment to destroy it. Our greatest mistakes in life often occur when we’re stressed, anxious, or angry.

Whenever you feel stressed, anxious, or angry, one remedy you can apply that’s really simple to do is deep breathing. As soon as you feel your heart rate picking up, your muscles tightening, and/or your head feeling nauseous, take a deep breath and count to four, then exhale slowly while counting to four. Keep repeating this slow breathing technique until you feel your heart rate normalize, your muscles relax, and clarity return to your mind.

Even if you’re not stressed, anxious, or angry, try this breathing technique. You’ll feel much more relaxed and ready to accomplish things.

Creative Writing, a Remedy for Stress, Anxiety, & Sadness.

Counter stress, anxiety, and depression by writing in you diary, journal, or blog. Write a novel or nonfiction.

[The following content is from a blog post I wrote at www.positivemasters.com, an e-commerce store that provides lifestyle practices, creative writing, books, apparel, accessories, and fashion to boost your happiness and counter your anxiety and depression.]

Creative Writing, a Remedy for Stress, Anxiety, & Sadness.

You’re grieving the latest round of loved ones who passed away, a close family member and a dear family friend, both with caring and happyΒ personalities, and both Positive Masters. You’re putting out fires fueled by personality clashes in a non-profit organization you’re leading that’s suppose to promote inner peace. Phone calls and emails get thrown at you from your business partners and vendors, telling you everything that’s going wrong. Payments aren’t coming in from your clients while your attorney defending you for your driving under the influence case is needing his payment. Oh, and for thatΒ driving under the influence case, the court threw the book at you for not being a good role model as a politicianΒ so you’re facing five days in jail. Business events, charities, and parties with alcohol was your escape from your stress back then. In your inner circle, a close friend is in the lowest point of his life and another is going through a painful divorce. On top ofΒ this, you’ve got so many things to do on a couple of other start-up business projects that gives you anxiety. When you stop working,Β your dark monkey mind haunts you at night and as soon as you wake up, telling you everything that could go wrong.

Your muscles tense up, your heart beats harder, and your breaths become shorter. A part of you wants to fade out. You picture Luke Skywalker meditating on theΒ large, flat rock on a cliff on a remote island on the planetΒ Ahch-To. His spirit is being astral projected to the planet Crait to face-off the entire First Order to defend his loved ones, until his energy is depleted, andΒ ultimately, he fades away with the sun setting in Ahch-ToΒ to be one with the force, leaving the rest of us to live on, facing the dark side without him.

So you go into your office, close your door and meditate. After a few minutes,Β you feel a cozy sensation, like you’re being hugged. It’s from the presence of your grandparents on both sides of your family. Β Both of your grandmothers radiate loving warmth to you. Your mother’s father who was very close to you, gives you extreme comfort, like he did when he was alive. His positive energy is so strong, no words are needed, just his presence. Then you hear the words from your father’s father. You don’t hear it, you feel it. “Jon, it’s just money. You can make more. It’s just five days in jail. I’m investing in you. Keep going.”

“I miss you so much. I love you,” I tell them as tears stream down both of my cheeks. I feel their warmth slipping away to the chill of the air from my air conditioner. My breaths are now deeper and longer, relaxing my body, and most importantly, relaxing my soul.

I pack my loyal robots, slipping my smartphone into the pocket of my cargo shorts and placing my laptop into my favorite backpack that I’ve been using since my days in law school, and headedΒ off on my usual path to my neighborhood coffee shop to get back to work on my vision.

Work at your happy place. Focus on what you can control. Attack your small goals every day. Execute my positive life practices consistently.

Focus on what you can control. Work on your small goals daily and count your wins for a dopamine rush.

I enjoy working on my 2013 MacBook Pro and Galaxy S7 Edge smartphone. These two machines are my pals. I’m super grateful for them. They’re an extension of me.

Here’s my work set-up at Starbucks @starbucks @waikelestarbucks on the 4th of July, 2019. To control my anxiety, I keep attacking my writing, logistics, designing, and reading to execute on my many small goals every day. πŸ’» By the way, I love my @apple Macbook Pro and my Samsung @samsungmobile Galaxy S7 Edge, my pals.

When I stop working, that’s when my dark thoughts take over so I counter them with all my lifestyle practices until I can get myself to sleep: mindfulness, gratitude, exercise, good food & beverages, time with positive people, work at my happy place, breath techniques, write from my heart, read books to improve myself, listen to music, update my daily goals and wins in my calendar, meditate, get some sunlight, look at the sky, drink green tea, smell an uplifting or relaxing scent, pray to my loved ones who passed away, talk to my mom, talk to my friend, and much more. My friends, do your daily practices every day to keep your soul bright.

Have a Growth Mindset!

Have a growth mindset! You can self-develop yourself by engaging, learning, experiencing, and evolving.

Master 7, leader of the Positive Masters and master of positive mindset wants you to have a growth mindset so you can be the best you can be! Engage, learn, fail, evolve, and always keep growing!

[I wrote the following article for the blog of +positive masters+, an e-commerce store that provides lifestyle practices, creative writing, books, apparel, accessories, and fashion to boost your happiness and crush your anxiety and depression at:Β www.positivemasters.com]

Have a Positive Mindset!

Specifically, let’s go over growth mindset versus fixed mindset, made famous by psychologist and authorΒ Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., who wrote “Mindset The New Psychology of Success,” which you can find at bookstores and Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Mindset-Psychology-Carol-S-Dweck/dp/0345472322. Dr. DweckΒ is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of motivation and is the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University.Β She has held professorships at Columbia and Harvard Universities, has lectured all over the world, and has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

So what is the difference between the two mindsets? People with a growthΒ mindset, achieve expertise by purposeful engagement. Everyone can change and grow through application and experience. Scientists are learning that people have more capacity for lifelong learning and brain development than they ever thought. A person with a growth mindset will stretch himself or herself into areas beyond his or her current reach and consistently work at it, learn, evolve, and grow, even when things aren’t going well. A person’s true potential is unknown. It’s impossible to see what is possible with years of relentless work, experience, and practice. Many things that may have appeared extremely difficultΒ to accomplish become possible. Failure is a part of the learning and evolving process. Since change and growth are possible, there are still many paths to success.

In contrast, people with a fixed mindset believe that every person has a fixed ability. There is only so much one can do with the abilities he or she is born with. They believe that success is about being more gifted than others. Some in this category feelΒ failure does measure you, and that effort is for those who can’t make it on talent.

Whether we have a growth mindset or fixed mindset is critical. With a growth mindset, you’re determined to go as far as you can. By attacking your goals and vision with continuous effort over time, you may do things that seemed impossible years before. Even if you fail, you learn, adjust, and keep moving forward, maybe not on the same path, but on some new or hybrid path. You don’t want to chain your potential down with a fixed mindset. No, you will push yourself into uncomfortable territory. You will keep going for it with all you’ve got! By the end of your life, you will have the satisfaction that you truly maximized who you could be!

My happy office!

I got out of my office and went to work at my fun office, Starbucks @starbucks @waikelestarbucks on June 25, 2019!! I bumped into an acquaintance from college. Also, as usual, my former business partner behind me was trying to get me to do free work for a former client. 😐 I’m a week behind on my internal deadline on one of my own projects.

Practices: Work at my happy office to increase my productivity. Listen to music to lift my spirits. Get those small wins by consistently working on my projects every day. Be present and grateful.

Crush it my friends!!!

Practices: (1) Focus on what I can control; (2) Work on one thing at a time to maximize my productivity; and (3) Be present and put aside my fear of what may or may not happen tomorrow.

My anxiety level is up today so seeing this post by @riskhappy is motivating me to snap out of my terrible feeling. I’m going to focus and work on what I can control. First, my appointments and work I have to finish dealing with my immediate deadline, followed by another deadline, and then another, and then paying a big bill. The first is extremely important because if I succeed in executing it, I can complete what I need to do for the other three areas in the short-run and long-run.

Practices: (1) Focus on what I can control; (2) Work on one thing at a time to maximize my productivity; and (3) Be present and put aside my fear of what may or may not happen tomorrow.

What are your strategies to alleviate anxiety and stress? I hope you’re doing well! ❀

The darker I go, the more I grow.

The darker I go, the more I grow.

I talk to parts of me I didn’t know.

Sparks light up everywhere, causing a glow.

I’ll come back stronger a thousand-fold.

– Jon Riki Karamatsu, Poem, 5/26/2019 –

I dedicate this poem to all of you going through your challenges. It came to me in my meditation. I greatly appreciate my darkness because it always generates sparks of inspiration, ideas, and plans that I’ve executed on since I was a kid. Go deep into the depths of darkness and use the dark energy to create light!!!

Make our suffering strengthen our purpose!

Make our #suffering strengthen our purpose! πŸ‘Š

We can be selfish with our suffering or we can be #loving with it. If we are selfish with our suffering, we get frustrated and angry and then blame people, events, and things for the pain we feel. When we are loving with our suffering, we embrace its painful power and use its energy to #improve ourselves and execute on our #goals and #vision for a better life and world. Once we boost ourselves with positive energy, we are able to help others and our environment. In turn, these people will help others like a domino effect that will cause the environment and culture to shift. One practice will destroy you, the other will #empower you.

Jon

Growth Mindset

I’m a strong believer in having a positive mindset in order to be happier and more fulfilled in life. Β In this post, I would like to point out the importance of us having a growth mindset, which is believing that our abilities and intelligence can be developed. Β We can develop our knowledge and skills by reading and practicing everyday. Β The more we work on our knowledge and skills, the better we get. Β If we keep up this daily practice, over time, we may attain the knowledge and become very good at the skills we envisioned ourselves achieving.

I like to schedule in my Google calendar blocks of time to learning and building skills and I color code them according to the subject matter. Β I count each 30-minute period of learning or practicing as a “win” in my Count My Wins program I created for myself. Β This program gives me a natural high from the happy chemicals released when I finish each 30-minute self-development session. I’m a very curious person so I push myself even in areas I’m unfamiliar with. Β I really want to become a better person mentally, spiritually, and physically.

Have fun in your self-development! Β Crush it!

3 of my daily practices: growth mindset, mindfulness, and gratitude.

(I took a picture of these plants and trees in Waikele, Hawaii on March 12, 2019. They represent growth in our growth mindset practice. I’m always mindful of the beauty around me. I’m grateful to experience such simple pleasures.)

Like A Child, I Create Another Dream and Do It All Over Again.

My sisters are princesses. My nieces are now princesses. They rule the world. Since I was young, I’ve wanted to save everyone fromΒ evil. I keep coming up withΒ ideas and mix them with other ideas – some good and some bad. Then I pursue them until I live my imagination. But every now and then, my fantasy comes crashing down. Like a child, I create another dream and do it all over again.

Death seeks us because it wants us to appreciate Life.

Death will always seek us. It wants us to acknowledge its presence, and even befriend it. Why? Because it wants us to be aware of our mortality to motivate us toΒ appreciate what we have and what we can do now. So when the time comes, though hard as it may be to leave our loved ones, we can embrace death uponΒ our last breath because we had embraced life.

Punching in a Dream.

I really like this band, The Naked and Famous. Β I’m feeling the lyrics.

When you’re cornered.
When it’s forming.
In the place that you wish was a ghost.

Keep failing until we succeed, and keep succeeding until we fail.

For many of us, dreams and goals make life exciting. Β I enjoy coming up with ideas, expanding my skill-sets, and building relationships. Β However, sometimes in the midst of our hustle to do well in our lives, we forget the importance of having gratitude for what we have now and accomplished thus far. Β We get too fixated on what we want and get frustrated when all our efforts are not taking us there. Β We all love success, but with every dream and goal we pursue, there will be challengesΒ and even failure. Β Some statistics say 8 out of 10 businesses started will fail. Β Many have pursued the pathΒ to become a U.S. Senator or President of the United States and have fallen short. Β Others have attempted to reach the highest levels in their field of work but have failed to attain that level. Β Failure is only failure if we don’t appreciate what we currently have and what we have gained. Β Shoot to be number one in the world, but number 50Β is still pretty darn good. Β We can make peace with ourΒ mind knowing that we didΒ our best, and won’t have the pain of wondering “What if I had given my idea a shot?” Β Through failure, we gain knowledge in areasΒ we may have not been familiar with; build new relationships; and even come up with more ideas to pursue. Β With failure, we change and evolve, often leading us to worlds we’ve never experienced. Β When we embrace failure as part of success, weΒ can keep moving higher to a level where we can keep failingΒ until we succeed, and keep succeeding until we fail.

Marie Forleo’s interview of Elizabeth Gilbert.

Hi Everyone,

Here’s a great interview of Elizabeth Gilbert by Marie Forleo in regards to unleashing your creative self. Β Ms. Gilbert is an entrepreneur, author, and motivational speaker. Β Below the video are my notes from this amazing interview. Β It’s sure to lift your spirit and keep you motivated as you pursue your creativity.

Jon’s Notes on Marie Forleo’s interview of Elizabeth Gilbert – Author

Latest Book: β€œBig Magic”

Nugget’s Wisdom: The real reason we don’t move creatively ahead is always and only fear.

  • Afraid they don’t have talent; afraid of rejection; afraid of criticism.

Nugget’s Wisdom: I have no desire to become a fearless person.

  • Only people who are fearless are psychopaths and toddlers.
  • Fear is a necessary companion.
  • Fear is the reason why we’re alive today. Fear protects us.

Nugget’s Wisdom: Creativity will always provoke your fear.

  • Acknowledge the importance of fear and invite it along. I’m just writing a poem. It’s not life or death.

Nugget’s Wisdom: You can’t let fear have control over your creative choices.

  • Fear can shut your creative choices one by one. No don’t do that – No, too risky.

Nugget’s Wisdom: Guaranteed it’s already been done, but it’s not yet been done by you.

  • 40,000 years of the art and pretty much it’s been done before.
  • Shakespeare borrowed stories and told them in a way that’s never been told before.
  • Artists have always been responding to stuff but you can add to the pile.
  • What moves me is the humanity in the authentic piece of creation. My heart and mind has changed. The world looks different.

β€œAll love eventually becomes help.” Inspired by Paul Tillich.

  • You will radiate a thing that people wants to be near.

Every pursuit comes with a shit sandwich. What do you love but willing to eat the shit sandwich?

  • 7 years of rejection letters. Are you willing to still eat the shit sandwich?
  • Even when you succeed, your shit sandwich will be media criticism, people criticism, etc.
  • Is this still better than nothing doing it? If yes, then you’re on the right path.

Nuggets of Wisdom: People murder their creativity by insisting they’re not truly creative unless their creativity pays the bills.

  • Jump and the net might catch you. What would do even if failure wasn’t a word you’re thinking of.
  • You may or not get everything you want.
  • Don’t be fixated on how much money your creativity makes. You work on your creativity because you love to work on it.
  • Don’t get so battered that you lose your house, family, etc. that you shut down and never want to work on your creativity.
  • Be child-like, not childish. Don’t be childish – I want it and I should get it. People get rage, resentment etc. for failure. DoΒ be child-like and be open to creativity like a child.

I wish there was a shortcut for personal and spiritual growth, relationships, health, but there’s not. It takes a lot of work.

Nuggets of Wisdom: Perfectionism is a serial killer.

  • I don’t want to be perfect, I want it to be finished.
  • There’s a lot of good unfinished work.
  • If your standards are so high, you’ll never finish you work.
  • The contract I made was to be a writer, not a good writer.
  • I promised the universe that I would be a writer, not a good writer.
  • I don’t want to go to my grave with 50 pages of an unfinished novel.
  • If you don’t like it, go write your own fucking book. And you know what, you won’t.

Nuggets of Wisdom: What will make you finish it is not discipline, but self-forgiveness.

  • Forgive yourself for not doing well.
  • I’m not Hemingway, but I’ll keep trying.

Nuggets of Wisdom: There’s no better thing to spend your life doing that saying yes to that invitation.

  • When did inspiration promise you anything – other than the amazing experience you have dancing with it for some time? Inspiration will watch you fall off the cliff and smile and ask you, β€œDo you want to do it again?”
  • Find ways to cushion the fall. Despite the pain, one of these days, you will say yes to inspiration again.

You will create something that you love and then you may hate it later. You love it and you dismiss it. It’s okay.

  • It’s not a baby. It’s just a thing I made. People will criticize it, attack it, hate it.
  • It’s independent of you. Your creativity was making you as you were developing it. When you finish it, forget about it.

Nuggets of Wisdom: There are two kinds of creators in the world: the martyrs, and the tricksters.

  • Reject the martyr way. I will do this even if it kills me.
  • Trickster: I didn’t come here to get hurt.
  • Tricksters do things in a transgressive way. They play with things, turn things upside down. Down have to treat things as a holy way.
  • Trickster trusts the universe. Put it out there and see what happens. Don’t be so heavy. There’s no one way.

Our Take, Take World.

We live in a take, take world. WhenΒ ourΒ energy is drained to the point where ourΒ health begins to fade, it’s time to pause to review our life and then make the changes necessary to recover.

To combat this, we have to focus on thoseΒ who fill usΒ with positive energy and who truly care for who weΒ are. We also needΒ to work on what we’re passionate about and provide value that helps others. Somehow,Β whenΒ we do this, good things come back to us.

Kaylee and Ken

Today April 23, 2016, I finished my 15th draft of my Writing Project #1, a fictional story that I created back when I couldn’t sleep on October 11 to 12, 2006. In the story, the young male protagonist Ken whose health is ailing meets a girl named Kaylee in his dreams who suffers from memory loss, regret, and deep sorrow. As his relationship develops with her, he realizes that his strange dreams are much deeper than ordinary dreams. While in the dream world, he discovers a powerful secret about energy that can not only help KayleeΒ with her memory loss and sorrow, but save his life and bring balance between good and evil. However, by helping Kaylee attain happiness, Ken realizes that he would lose her forever.

The love between Kaylee and Ken will empower us to play a role in making our universe more positive. I dedicate “Us” by Kaskade & CID to all of you.

Love Songs to Inspire

After 32 days of non-stop work on a development project in Kona, Hawaii and an EB-5Β Regional Center based in Hawaii, I’m typing my 15th draft of my first novel that I started in October 2006Β that currently consists ofΒ nearly 80,000 words,Β a love story between a young male protagonist and a dead girl that brings forward our fears of being alone, not finding true love in our lifetime, losing the battle againstΒ negative people, and dying without resolving the pain resulting from heartbreak and broken families. This weekend, I’m also going to continue working on my novel based in Iraq during the U.S. occupation – aΒ love story that is sure to draw controversy because itΒ is surrounded by violence, something you may either understand or disagree with, depending on where you stand on certain political issues. Nonetheless, the bottom line is that love can guide us through anger, death, and our darkest moments.Β I began writing myΒ second story in May 2013 and it has just under 44,973 words.

The song “Unconditionally” by Katy Perry describes the emotional depth that the characters in my novels have with with each other despite their flaws and all the craziness around them. Even if the world is burning around them and their fate seems doomed, you yearn for their love to succeed. This music video has a ballroom scene. Likewise, my first story has a climax chapter with a ballroom scene. Such a powerful song.

Today, I just listened to theΒ song below “Graduate” by Handsome Ghost and I immediately liked it. Β The song connects to my stories because the characters in my novels have enormous obstacles that’s preventing them from being together.

“Swept Away” by Christoper Cross is one of my all-time favorite love songs ever, so much so that I wrote it into my first novel. Every time I listen to it, it brings out this warm feeling in my chest, and when I’m alone or writing a love story, it bring so much emotions out of me.

“Seeing for the First Time” by Britt Nicole is another song that represents the love that the characters in my novels have for oneΒ another.

I hope you enjoyed this entry and the songs! Β Take care and may happiness be with you always.

With Warmest Aloha,

Jon Riki Karamatsu

If they judge you by extraordinary standards, then live super extraordinary lives.

With innovation, hard work, relationship-building, and a relentless pursuit of success, comes a higher level of jealousy, envy, and scrutiny. It doesn’t matter how good our intentions are. We are often told that we knew what we were getting into. The message is clear: If we wanted to avoid such negativity, we should’ve settled with an average life. But that message goes against everything that our parents and teachers taught us – that we can go as far as we want to go.

I believe that we should continue to pursue our dreams and develop friendships that last a lifetime. We must keep working hard to create products and services through our ideas. If others want to judge us by extraordinary standards, then we just have to live super extraordinary lives.

Though I’m no longer serving in the public sector, I will do my best to help Hawaii and America’s economy through the companies that I’m a partner of. In the spirit of the music events business that I’m involved with, here is an uplifting song “We Don’t Stop” by Kaskade that encourages us to keep doing the best weΒ can in ourΒ pursuit of happiness.

Into the Light of Happiness.

At times, our greatest enemy is ourselves. Our negative thoughts push aside our positive ones, which in turn,Β affects our actions and everything around us. We get hard on ourselves for our failures when there wasΒ so much that we gained from taking that journey.Β We dwell on the past and what we don’t have, when the future is so bright with endless possibilities.Β We mourn the dead even though they never did leave us. Meanwhile, there are so many people who love us, and many more who are cheering us on to make ourΒ next move. So why stay still and let the darkness consume us? We have to make our move, and then another, and then many, many more.Β The future is relying on what we do now. To maximize what’s ahead of us, we need to be alive in the here and now. By practicing gratitude and compassion, we can transcend past our fears and into the light of happiness.

Below is a song called “Spirits” by the Strumbellas that reflect my feelings in my journal entry above.

I will comfort you in that realm of inner peace.

I will comfort you in that realm of inner peace where it doesn’t matter if we’re awake or not.

Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is the truth.

The greater your success, the greater your punishment.

“With greater success, comes stifferΒ scrutiny, higher bias, and extraordinaryΒ judgement, even if you have the greatest intentions. It’s a punishment for those who innovate and work hard, which makes you wonder if it’s better to be average.” – Jon Riki Karamatsu, March 19, 2016.

With this in mind, I no longerΒ recommend any of the upcoming generations to enter public service in an elected or appointed position. Β It’s not worth it.

Greed

“‘Greed’ can ride you with minimum or no effort while maximizing all your work until your services are no longer needed.” – Jon Riki Karamatsu, March 17, 2016.
