The Valuable Lessons I Learned as a Pearl City High School Charger!

The Valuable Lessons I Learned as a Pearl City High School Charger!

The Valuable Lessons I Learned as a Pearl City High School Charger!

Since I was asked to write for my Pearl City High School’s 50th Anniversary Book (1971-2021) by my former teacher, Mrs. Arlene Aranita who I reconnected at a funeral for a close family friend, Mr. Eric Kanemoto who was my soccer coach, Cub Scout Master, and Pearl City Highlands Intermediate School teacher, and my dad’s really close friend, I thought I could hit two goals in one strike by writing about for the Positive Masters’ blog. For those of you unfamiliar with Hawaii, Pearl City High School is located in Pearl City on the island of Oahu, State of Hawaii. The draft of my article is as follows:

The education and life skills taught by our teachers in our public grade schools are extremely valuable. High School is the last phase for us before we enter the “real world.” In the Fall of 1989, at thirteen years old, I entered Pearl City High School, home of the mighty Chargers. I was excited to be a part of an institution that has helped to develop productive citizens in the professional sectors, trades, and non-profit arena. Our school has also produced politicians, entrepreneurs, movie stars, musicians, and influencers in other creative fields.

Many of my childhood friends from soccer, scouting, and other community organizations that I was involved with attended Pearl City High School, a number of whom I still keep in touch today. While a Charger, I played for the varsity soccer team for four years, played the trumpet in the marching band for four years, volunteered as a member of the Interact Club, served as a member of the Computer Club, participated in an after-school math group led by a math teacher, and was a participant of the Homecoming Court in 1989 and Senior Prom Court in 1992. I expanded my network with students of different backgrounds and interests. Public school gave me an opportunity to learn from personalities who faced different challenges in their lives, which helped me tremendously years later when I became a lawyer in 2001 and a politician and businessperson in 2002.

Besides building relationships with people, I learned about many subjects such as social studies, history, English, math, science, computers, music, and Japanese language. My best grades were in social studies, followed by English. I was average in math and science. My worse grades were some Ds and Fs from band and my last year in Japanese language, which caused me some worries in regards to my chances of getting accepted into the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the only university I applied for. Fortunately, I got accepted, where I received my bachelor’s degree in political science, and then continued on with my education at Gonzaga University School of Law where I attained my law degree. I sincerely wanted to learn the language of my ancestors but remembering the strokes to write kanji was challenging for me. As for band and marching band, well, I kind of joined them because that’s where most of the student body hung out, not to mention the cute girls.

Some of my teachers in high school were extremely influential in my life. During the first semester of my Freshman year, my social studies teacher, Mr. Wagner had us read portions of U.S. Senator and World War II veteran Daniel K. Inouye’s biography, which sparked my interest in equal rights and politics. All of my English teachers such as Mrs. Aranita, Mrs. Chun, and Mrs. Abe were strict in a good way and very inspiring. They truly wanted the best in us. English teacher, Mrs. Abe recommended that I audition for the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, which I did and was chosen to perform in plays with my fellow cast members before Intermediate schools around Oahu, Hawaii. I ended up acting in theatre at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a few local television commercials and programs.

Through the inspiration of my English teachers, I continue to read and write to improve my writing skills, a lifelong process that’s still occurring. Besides writing for my work in law and government affairs, I wrote two unpublished novels. The first is Princess Cupcake, which takes us on a journey of a young politician, Ken who leaves his body while he sleeps to travel to a realm of the dead where souls are trapped because they were unable to accomplish things while they were alive. While there, he falls in love with a young woman, Kaylee and becomes a target of a dark force upon discovering the secrets of what happens after you die and how the living can affect the power of the dead. My second unpublished novel is Princess & the Terrorist. Struggling with the new realities of living in a war-torn Iraq caused by the American invaders two months earlier, 12-year-old Mustafa becomes friends with Amira who is the same age as him, while recovering at a hospital after they were nearly killed by a suicide bomb. They’re torn apart when Amira’s well-to-do family yanks her out of the hospital to flee Iraq to the United Kingdom. With both of his parents killed by the war and no one to care for him, Mustafa gets placed in an abusive orphanage. Through the help of his best friend, Mustafa runs away from the orphanage with a five-year-old boy he protects from a gang of older bullies. In consideration for shelter and a salary, they join the Freedom Fighters of Iraq, a militia rebelling against the Americans, Iraqi government, and their coalition. Years later, Mustafa and Amira, now in their teens bump into each other on a street in Baghdad, Iraq. They fall deeply in love with each other. However, they’re no longer the innocent kids who met at the hospital, daydreaming of flying away to enchanted places on a magic carpet. In a war destroying everything it touches; its grips are quickly closing on Mustafa and Amira. Creative writing and storytelling has played a huge role in comforting my soul.

I really enjoyed playing for the Pearl City High School Chargers’ varsity soccer team. We were lucky to always be one of the top teams in the State of Hawaii, consistently winning the Oahu Interscholastic Association title and continuously playing in the semifinals for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s state championship tournament, even coming in second place in a state championship match.

An important life lesson that classes and sports taught me is how to handle losing, a much more valuable lesson than all the wins I achieved. In life, you’ll get knocked down but you have to get back up, grow from your failures, and keep going. My Pearl City High School soccer coach Ron Mata told us to be tenacious like bulldogs that bite and never let go. If you have a vision of what you want in your life and in the world, you have to put in a lot of work, thousands of hours of work. Every day, attack your small goals, which will add up over time. In time, you’ll be able to achieve some big wins!

Happiness is what I wish for my fellow Pearl City High School classmates, alumni, teachers, and staff. As best as you can, don’t be fixated on things you can’t control. Rather, focus on what you can control. Keep developing your mind, body, and soul. Always be grateful for all the good things in your life. Spend time with positive people who lift you up. Cherish your time with your loved ones. If you have visions of what you want, go for them now!

With Warmest Aloha,

Jon Riki Karamatsu

We can improve the way we perceive and process reality!

We can improve the way we perceive and process reality. See an event as it is. Don't let your emotions take over your mind and make you judge the event as bad or good. It just is. Look for the good or a lesson in every challenging situation or person. What positive action can you take to move on? Take this action, move forward, and let the unpleasant event be.

Being positive is way cooler than being negative!

Being positive is way cooler than being negative! Your daily acts of kindness can put a smile on a person's face, even motivate others to live a happier life!

To achieve world peace, we must start with ourselves. If we can maintain peace within ourselves, others may be encouraged to do the same. If a majority of the human race can be at peace within themselves, only then can we achieve world peace.

Being positive is way cooler than being negative! Your daily acts of kindness can put a smile on a person’s face, even motivate others to live a happier life! In contrast, negative people drain your energy with their anger, impatience, pessimism, complaints, and tantrums. When you maintain peace within yourself, you can handle challenging situations in a calmer manner. Only when everyone is at peace with oneself will we attain world peace. Leave a positive legacy filled with love, compassion, and empathy for the younger generations to follow! 😃🙌

Here’s our Plus Sign Logo Unisex T-Shirt, available at www.positivemasters.com!!! The plus sign design on the t-shirt represents your positive lifestyle. It also represents adding up your daily wins such as your small goals for the day, wonderful interactions with others, simple pleasures, and time with your loved ones! ❤

You encourage yourself to learn & try challenging things. You push the limits of your mind, body, & soul. You research a lot & then execute on goals that are difficult to achieve or even seem impossible. When you achieve a goal, it’s one of the most thrilling experiences! However, if you’re unable to accomplish it, you have the satisfaction knowing that you gave your greatest effort & tried every possibility to achieve it. The lessons you learned from a failure become a part of your foundation for your growth. ❤

In contrast, a pessimist will shoot down his/her abilities before working on them. A pessimist will also shoot down the possibility of success for any other person or organization attempting to achieve something difficult. 💣

If you want to see how far you can go in positively impacting your career, personal life, community, & even the entire world, keep practicing rational optimism & surround yourself with those with this superpower mindset. Here’s a poem to motivate you to go after your dreams by writing your small goals down in your calendar, notebook, and/or apps!

I grab my pen and design my next day.

It’s a game, so I play.

Scratch out all the hate.

It’s just my feelings that are dead.

Go ahead.

You can see what’s in my head.

I’m still alive.

It’s just my feelings that are dead.

– Jon Riki Karamatsu, Poem, 9/28/19 – ✒

We all go through sadness. All of us also face our worries. But have you ever felt nothing? ❔

For me, whenever I feel sad or worried, I embrace these feelings because they’re so pure. You feel them because you care about someone or some important issue. A lot of my best work are fueled by these feelings because they motivate me. 😊

However, there have been a few times in my life where I felt nothing. It’s like you feel numb to anything. That’s the worse place to be in. There’s no energy to push you forward. Fortunately, I’ve developed 71 practices thus far that I use to prevent myself from falling that deep into darkness. If I do fall, I’m able to snap out of it because of these practices. I wrote about a number of my positive practices in my personal blog at http://www.jonriki.com and at Positive Masters’ blog at http://www.positivemasters.com. If they can help you, I would be super happy. ❤

Part 3 of 3: Live the middle way. From the middle, you can see the light in every dark situation.

Live the middle way. From the middle, you can see the light in every dark situation. It's a super power that will expand your gratitude .

Live the middle way. From the middle, you can see the light in every dark situation. It’s a super power that will expand your gratitude power, another super power, making your positive lifestyle even stronger.

Part 3 of 3: Live the middle way. From the middle, you can see the light in every dark situation.

From the middle, you can see the connection between dark and light because from the middle, you can see everything, dark, light, and all the shades in-between. If you can see the light when you’re in darkness, even a glimmer, then you can be grateful in your darkest moments.

In fact, the more you practice being in the middle, you’ll be able to expand your gratitude practice because you can always see the good (light) in all your bad (dark) situations. This is definitely a super power to have! Here are my 10 examples of how suffering can expand your gratitude practice despite a challenging experience:

1. When a loved one dies, you’re grateful for the time you had with that person.
2. When your romantic relationship falls apart, you’re grateful to have had the opportunity to experience romance.
3. When you fail at a goal, you’re grateful for the lessons you learned from the failure.
4. When you face financial hardship, you’re grateful for every little thing you have that helps you get by.
5. When you provide value for others but get attacked by opposition or critics, you’re grateful for your ability to create value for others and evolve.
6. When facts in litigation aren’t believed by the trier of fact where you face fines, jail, and/or unfavorable rulings you’re grateful that you had the opportunity to tell what happened.
7. When you can no longer drive a vehicle, you’re grateful for public transportation and private sector transportation programs.
8. When your health declines, you’re grateful for still being alive and having what abilities you still have.
9. When you’re wronged by people, you’re grateful for all the positive people in your life.
10. When your life appears to be in turmoil, you’re grateful that you were born to even have a shot at life.

Focus on what you can control! Don’t let your anxiety control you.

Focus on what you can control! Don't let your anxiety control you.

Focus on what you can control! Don’t let your anxiety control you.

As soon as you wake up, express your gratitude for all the good things in your life and do a 5 to 10-minute meditation if you have time. Freshen up, listen to uplifting music, and have a nice breakfast. Avoid your phone and computer until you’re charged up with positive energy because there may be messages and emails in your devices that will raise your cortisol and stress you out before you even had a chance to mentally prepare yourself for your day. It’s like preparing yourself for a match in sports, you want to be mentally ready!

Then when you address your challenges for the day, attack the tasks that you can control. Understand the problems that you can’t control but push them to the side so you can achieve your wins for the day.

Live the middle way. From the middle, you can see the light in every dark situation.

The middle way. From the middle, you can see the light in every dark situation.

Part 2 of 3: Live the middle way. From the middle, you can see the light in every dark situation.

From the middle, you can see the connection between dark and light because from the middle, you can see everything, dark, light, and all the shades in-between. Darkness won’t consume you because you’ve trained yourself to see the light, even if it’s only a speck, which will make you appreciative of your life in your darkest moments. Nor will you be blinded by light and overlook the darkness hidden beneath it all so you’ll be ready for any negativity that could emerge.

In Part 1, we talked about how we humans are prone to judging others. We can also be very judgmental on our experiences, labeling them as either bad (dark) or good (light). When you experience suffering, you may feel tempted to label it as darkness, which may cause you stress, anxiety, frustration, sadness and/or anger, all negative emotions that pushes aside your happiness and negatively impacts everyone you interact with. From the middle, you’ll be able to see the light in even the most darkest of situations because you’ll be able to recognize the good that came out of a bad situation.

For example, when you fail at something, you’ll be able see the lesson in that failure, a lesson that will make you grow only if you embrace it. You’re able to use that failure as a huge motivator in your self-improvement process.

When someone you love passes away, you’re able to be grateful for all the experiences you shared with that person. You know that your loved one would want you to be happy and that he or she would be so sad to see you suffering over his or her death.

So live in the middle to always see the positive in every bad experience. You’ll also be prepared for anything bad that may arise from what you thought was a great situation.

Part 1 of 3: Live the middle way. From the middle, you can see the light in every dark situation. 😊

Live the middle way. From the middle, you can see the connection between dark and light because from the middle, you can see everything, dark, light, and all the shades in-between. If you can see the light when you’re in darkness, even a glimmer of light, then you can be grateful in your darkest moments. 🌅

We humans are prone to judging others and our experiences. We label people and our experiences as either bad (dark) or good (light). From the middle, you don’t jump to a conclusion that someone is either dark or light, bad or good. From the middle, you don’t jump to a conclusion that an experience is dark or light, bad or good. 🌄

When a person lashes his or her anger at you, you’re tempted to label that person as a dark person. When you’re in the middle, you’ll see the light in even the most hateful person. You go deeper and have empathy for that person who may have suffered deeply at the hands of others. 🙏

For my career, my worst experience was working in a courtroom with an elder judge who was often grumpy and giving tantrums. I was so broken down by this man that my close friend Brandon took me to the beach in the middle of my workday to lift my spirit up. Being in the Vietnam War was his backstory. There was probably more to his story. He would break the law and give leniency to veterans of war. He was always kind towards beautiful women. In contrast, he would slam the book at ordinary citizens, even sending a kid to prison for a number of days for racing his car on a street. Instead of hating the judge like some of the other attorneys, staff, and citizens attending the hearings, I did my best to look deeper to see how he may have suffered emotionally from the war or maybe even by the way his parents raised him. By doing this, I could wish the judge happiness. ❤

Exercise your mind daily to be grateful for all the good things in your life!

Every day be grateful for all the good things in your life.

From the moment you wake up until you go to sleep, be appreciative of all the good things in your life. For me, this is one of the most powerful practices. once it becomes a habit, it can power you through your darkest periods of your life.

Exercise your mind daily to be grateful for all the good things in your life. Darkness can strike at any time. It can happen gradually or suddenly. No matter what difficulty you’re facing, there’s always things to be grateful for. 😊

For me, gratitude has been one of the most important lifestyle practices. I start my day by being grateful for having an opportunity at life. When I make my breakfast and beverage, I use my dishes and kitchenware with gratitude, many of which were from my loved ones, some who had passed away. My gratitude practice can make my problems look smaller. The key though is to practice it daily with other positive lifestyle practices such as getting enough sleep, focusing on what I can control, exercise, etc. If I slip and don’t apply myself to these practices, my problems start appearing larger than they should, allowing darkness to cloud my vision. That’s when I have to reset myself or be near a positive loved one who can boost me back up to get back into my rhythm with my positive lifestyle practices. ❤

You can have meaning in your life through your creativity!

You can have meaning in your life through your creativity!

Having a Meaningful Life – Part 1 of 3! 👊

In the mission statement of Positive Masters, we want you to be happy & have a fulfilling life. One of the key points to achieving this, is to have meaning in your life. To attain this, you must have a wide view of your life in order to see the whole spectrum of meaning & values that you can embrace. If your view of yourself is narrow, you may miss those precious gems within you that could sparkle joy in your life. ❤

You can have meaning in your life through your (1) creativity, (2) experiences, & (3) attitude. In this article, let’s discuss creativity. 💡

When you create a value for yourself & others through a service or product, you have purpose. If you’re passionate about that service or product, then even better because your work doesn’t feel like work because you enjoy doing it. You ever notice how time passes by smoothly & quickly when you’re working on something you’re passionate about? Notice how your focus on your passionate project pushes away any of your worries &/or sadness. You’re in the flow! This is the greatest state to be in to create value for yourself & others. For me, writing this article for you gives me great joy! 😊❤

Fun Homework: Write down 10 things you enjoy that could provide value for yourself & others. Then write down 10 ways or variations on how to execute on your creation of each of those 10 things you enjoy. There may be a company or non-profit organization that you could join to create those passions of yours. If not, you could create a new company or non-profit organization to provide this value. Have fun on this! ✍ 💻 📑 ✌

Welcome Monkey Mind to the Positive Masters Universe!

Positive Masters' Monkey Mind Unisex T-Shirt encourages us to overcome our Monkey Mind. Stop worrying on what you can't control. Focus on what you can control.

Monkey Mind has been a part of our DNA for survival since the primitive days of the human race. We had to worry about the downside in order to survive against the threats of nature, other creatures, and our own kind. However, we now live in a time where our daily threats are often our fear of failure in our careers and relationships. A saber tooth tiger is not after us every day. Quick on actions. Patience on results.

Be quick on your actions. Have patience on your results.

Be quick on your actions. Have patience on your results.

Be quick on your actions. Whenever I have an idea, I start typing it down as soon as possible on my app for notes on my smart phone or laptop. Sometimes I write it down in my notebook. Next, I research and write my plan and strategy. If it looks doable, I execute my actions stated in my plan. I do my best to work on my small goals daily. Over time, these small goals compound, and so does my knowledge, skills, and relationships. If it’s a physical activity, I read up on it and then begin practicing it. If I enjoy the activity, I add it to my arsenal of physical exercises.

Have patience on your results. Many successful people say it takes 10 years or more to achieve our big goals. I don’t consider myself a successful person, but for all the things I’ve envisioned achieving, it took me about 6 to 7 years to accomplish them, whether it be a high-scoring soccer player in my teenage years, becoming a lawyer and politician, and reaching certain benchmarks for my business ventures. Of course, on my journey towards my goals, I’ve had numerous small failures and a few big ones. However, my failures gave me valuable lessons, skills, and some good relationships that adds to my ever-growing foundation. Currently, I’m reinventing myself and working on several business projects that has been very challenging, even uncomfortable at times. I’ll keep working hard to succeed, yet always be ready to adjust and evolve when things don’t go as planned. I’m doing all I can to be patient with my results.

If you’re impatient on your results, you’ll get frustrated with your failures and criticize your progress as being too slow. Further, your stress and anxiety will rise. Impatience on your results may cause you to give up on your dreams before you could fully know your potential. For me, it would kill me to not know the extent of my potential, win or lose.

I hope these practices can help you as much as it helps me. I wish you the best in all your endeavors!

Benefits of Cold Showers!

Cold showers increase your alertness, relax & repair your muscles, make your skin & hair glow, burn fat, & alleviate stress & depression.

Need a boost, take a cold shower!

Hawaii has been extremely humid for the past 2 months, the worse I’ve ever experienced in my lifetime living here. Besides loving the air conditioning, I like to take a cold or cool shower that gives me a refreshing feeling! Well, there are a number of benefits of cold showers as I learned from reading articles from medical websites. 😊

For one, a cold shower is good to wake you up. When the cold water hits your skin, you get a bit of a shock that increases your heart rate & oxygen intake. You’ll notice a greater alertness. 😉

Second, after a workout, a cold shower will help relax & repair your muscles. 🏃‍ 🏃‍
Third, our skin & hair gets a healthier glow because the cold water constricts & tightens our blood flow. Cold water tightens your cuticles & pores, which prevents them from getting clogged. Cold water can tighten the pores in the skin & scalp too, preventing dirt from getting in.

Fourth, when we expose our body to cold water, some fat cells like Brown Fat can generate heat by burning fat, thus, we can lose some weight. Adults have small reserves of Brown Fat stored around the shoulders & neck. 😊

Fifth, by taking a cold shower, you can help alleviate some of the symptoms of stress or depression as a result of the intense impact of cold receptors in the skin that send a great amount of electrical impulses from the peripheral nerve endings to the brain. You may feel an improvement in your mood . As an alternative to a cold shower, have a swim in the cool ocean, lake, or swimming pool on a nice sunny day or go on a hike & take a shower from a cold waterfall so you get an increase of happy chemicals from exercise, Vitamin D from the sun, & therapy from nature because your senses are being exposed to the lapping sounds of water, refreshing touch of the cool water, smells of the fresh air, & sight of the beautiful scenery. ❤

As a note, medical professionals don’t recommend exposing yourself to cold water when you’re already feeling cold or undergoing an illness.

Whew it’s hot in Hawaii, I’m ready for another cold shower! 😃

Be present to absorb the beauty around you!

Live in the present an absorb all the beauty around you!

Practice mindfulness every day to consistently be aware of the beauty around you!

Mindfulness is a simple and powerful daily practice to boost your happiness. Simply be present to enjoy all the good things around you. Wherever you go, look around to enjoy the sight. Here’s a beautiful picture of the trees, plants, sky, and clouds in Waikele, Hawaii as I walked to the coffee shop. The contrasting colors are amazing! 😃

On your bad days, just focus on 1 to 3 of the most important things that you need to get done that day and execute on them!

Here’s an article I wrote for Positive Masters at www.positive masters.com, an e-commerce store that provides lifestyle practices, creative writing, apparel, accessories, and fashion to boost your happiness and counter any stress, anxiety, and sadness you may be facing.

When times are difficult, focus on one to three of the things that if you complete, you will fill much better.

On your bad days, just work on 1 to 3 of the most important things that you need to do, and more importantly, by completing them, you know you will feel better. That alone is huge!

On some days, you wake up with less motivation to attack your day. Maybe you’re stressed about the overwhelming amount of work you have to do. Maybe you’re down because things aren’t going as you planned? You’re wondering if something will or will not happen, causing you angst. Are you worrying about a relationship, the break-up of one, or being lonely? The death of a loved may have hit you hard. Maybe it’s because someone yelled at you at work or the critics are attacking you. Heck, it could be all of the above.

You turn off your alarm, wishing you could fade away into a wonderful dream where you’re smiling and sipping a favorite beverage as you overlook the glistening blue ocean with puffy white clouds floating through the teal blue skies. Aaaaaahhh, that would be wonderful!

No, you can’t do that. Not now. So you drag yourself out of bed and freshen up. Then you return to your bedroom and make your bed to get your first win of the day. You tell yourself, “No matter what happens today, I can make my bed, and when I return, it’ll be welcoming me!”

You execute on your favorite practice, gratitude. “I’m so lucky to be alive to have a shot in this universe,” you say to yourself. You’re mindful of all the useful and memorable things in your home and express your gratitude. As you make your breakfast, you use your late grandma’s plate and quietly express your thanks as you think of your grandma. You see items from your other late grandparents and your parents, causing positive energy to pour into your soul.

With your breakfast, you drink green tea for its benefits such as L-Theanine to calm your anxiety and mellow its caffeine, which gives you the calm type of clarity that you need.

In addition to your mindful and gratitude practices, you do a quick self-reflection on all the good qualities you have and how you’re going to apply them to get closer to your dreams of your future. On your worse days, you meditate to clear yourself of all your negative thoughts.

Okay, Now you’re ready to take on the day. However, you power up your computer and stare at it. Damn, you feel nothing.

You ever feel like this? I do. We all have these challenging days because we’re human. We can’t expect to always have those awesome days when ideas flow smoothly and problems get resolved rather simply. Those terrific days when you put in 10 hours of fulfilling work that didn’t feel like work because you were enjoying the process.

On your bad days, just focus on 1 to 3 of the most important things that you need to get done that day and execute on them. That’s all you have to do. When coming up with the 1 to 3 things you need to work on, don’t add up many tiny tasks, instead, lump them into broad categories to fit into those 1 to 3 things you need to complete for the day. It’s psychologically beneficial to simplify what you need to do. We’re telling ourselves, “I got this. I can do this.” Don’t allow the gloomy side of your mind to sabotage your plan by overcomplicating and even exaggerating the work you have before you. For that day, you don’t have to achieve a million things, only on those few key goals you set for yourself. Accomplishing these goals, even if they’re little are huge because every single accomplishment will add up over time. Getting those few things done will also boost your happy chemicals. Praise yourself for this accomplishment!

This is a part of the process of what I do to keep myself moving forward on my not so good days. It works for me. If it can help you in some way to feel better on your terrible days, it would make me happy!

We understand the generations before us when we become them.

[I wrote this article for +positive masters+ at www.positivemasters.com, an e-commerce store that provides life practices, creative writing, apparel, accessories, and fashion to boost your happiness and counter any stress, anxiety, or sadness you may be facing.]

We understand the generations before us when we become them.

I appreciate my late grandparents and parents even more now that I’m older.

During our time from children to adults, we observe our parents and grandparents. The world is new to us. We keep learning and exploring.

As we grow older, our grandparents and their friends fade away and our parents become the seniors. We’ve got careers and responsibilities. Some of us have kids, some of us don’t. It’s at this point that we begin to understand the sacrifices our parents and grandparents went through because we’ve become them. Once, our parents are gone, we have to take on their role. It’s surreal when you think about it, to say goodbye to our parents and their generation. As time marches on, our generation will also fade out, so we have to make the world the best it can be for the younger ones coming up. Time is the most precious resource. Let’s make the most of it. Do the things you want to do with your love your loved ones and love them with all you’ve got!

Deep Breathing, a Remedy for Stress, Anxiety, & Anger.

[I wrote the following article at www.positivemasters.com, an e-commerce store that provides lifestyle practices, creative writing, books, apparel, accessories, and fashion to boost your happiness and crush your anxiety and depression.]

Relieve stress, anxiety, and anger with deep breathing!

It takes years to build a good reputation, yet, it takes only a moment to destroy it. Our greatest mistakes in life often occur when we’re stressed, anxious, or angry.

Whenever you feel stressed, anxious, or angry, one remedy you can apply that’s really simple to do is deep breathing. As soon as you feel your heart rate picking up, your muscles tightening, and/or your head feeling nauseous, take a deep breath and count to four, then exhale slowly while counting to four. Keep repeating this slow breathing technique until you feel your heart rate normalize, your muscles relax, and clarity return to your mind.

Even if you’re not stressed, anxious, or angry, try this breathing technique. You’ll feel much more relaxed and ready to accomplish things.

Have a Growth Mindset!

Have a growth mindset! You can self-develop yourself by engaging, learning, experiencing, and evolving.

Master 7, leader of the Positive Masters and master of positive mindset wants you to have a growth mindset so you can be the best you can be! Engage, learn, fail, evolve, and always keep growing!

[I wrote the following article for the blog of +positive masters+, an e-commerce store that provides lifestyle practices, creative writing, books, apparel, accessories, and fashion to boost your happiness and crush your anxiety and depression at: www.positivemasters.com]

Have a Positive Mindset!

Specifically, let’s go over growth mindset versus fixed mindset, made famous by psychologist and author Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., who wrote “Mindset The New Psychology of Success,” which you can find at bookstores and Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Mindset-Psychology-Carol-S-Dweck/dp/0345472322. Dr. Dweck is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of motivation and is the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. She has held professorships at Columbia and Harvard Universities, has lectured all over the world, and has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

So what is the difference between the two mindsets? People with a growth mindset, achieve expertise by purposeful engagement. Everyone can change and grow through application and experience. Scientists are learning that people have more capacity for lifelong learning and brain development than they ever thought. A person with a growth mindset will stretch himself or herself into areas beyond his or her current reach and consistently work at it, learn, evolve, and grow, even when things aren’t going well. A person’s true potential is unknown. It’s impossible to see what is possible with years of relentless work, experience, and practice. Many things that may have appeared extremely difficult to accomplish become possible. Failure is a part of the learning and evolving process. Since change and growth are possible, there are still many paths to success.

In contrast, people with a fixed mindset believe that every person has a fixed ability. There is only so much one can do with the abilities he or she is born with. They believe that success is about being more gifted than others. Some in this category feel failure does measure you, and that effort is for those who can’t make it on talent.

Whether we have a growth mindset or fixed mindset is critical. With a growth mindset, you’re determined to go as far as you can. By attacking your goals and vision with continuous effort over time, you may do things that seemed impossible years before. Even if you fail, you learn, adjust, and keep moving forward, maybe not on the same path, but on some new or hybrid path. You don’t want to chain your potential down with a fixed mindset. No, you will push yourself into uncomfortable territory. You will keep going for it with all you’ve got! By the end of your life, you will have the satisfaction that you truly maximized who you could be!

If you observe happy people, they light up everyone around them, and their positive energy pushes them through their challenges. In contrast, negative people are uncomfortable to be around and they fall seem to always fall apart with tantrums, anger, and/or sadness.

Death has been a strange friend of mine. I love death as much as I love life because death has taught me how to live.

I think about death every day. It has been on my mind since I was brand new to this world. A time when I could count my age with one hand. I remember thinking about it when my uncle Dwight had died. I asked my dad, “What happens after you die?”

He answered, “When you die, you die, that’s it.”

I went to my bedroom and cried on my bed. With the urging of my mom, my dad came to my room and told me that there’s a nice place where people go to after they die.

Understanding my impermanence has been my greatest motivator ever since. I go all-out on every passionate vision that crosses my mind. I’ve tried so many things because of it. I had some nice experiences and some not so nice experiences, but one thing’s for sure, I have no regrets. I would rather try and fail than to not try and wonder what if I had given it a shot? And for the times I did win, man it’s an indescribable feeling of euphoria where you’re so happy you cry in a higher realm because of all the suffering you went through in order to achieve your goal.

No matter how bad life can be, as long as we’re alive, we can still do a lot of damage. You’ll never know what your limits are unless you push yourself to break them. When you befriend death, you love life more. You don’t waste time on petty things many people complain about. Nor do you hate and judge others. These negative types of people may only realize the most important things in life when they face their own imminent mortality if they are lucky enough to have some time to think before they die.

With this state of mind, death has been a strange friend of mine. I love death as much as I love life because death has taught me how to live.

Want to be productive? Grow your hair long and/or closely watch children grow up.

Here’s two strategies I use for my productivity: (1) Grow your hair long and cut it when you finish some of your goals; and/or (2) Have your sibling or siblings or an immediate family member have children because you will watch very closely how fast they grow up, which will make you work harder to get things done.

We can grow our hair long anytime. I’ve been doing it since I was a teenager, even when I was a politician and government attorney. As for our loved ones having children, well, this is a bit more tricky. Have fun with this strategy!

Here are pictures of my 10-month old niece and I with our long bangs on October 20, 2018 in San Mateo, California.

Growth Mindset

I’m a strong believer in having a positive mindset in order to be happier and more fulfilled in life.  In this post, I would like to point out the importance of us having a growth mindset, which is believing that our abilities and intelligence can be developed.  We can develop our knowledge and skills by reading and practicing everyday.  The more we work on our knowledge and skills, the better we get.  If we keep up this daily practice, over time, we may attain the knowledge and become very good at the skills we envisioned ourselves achieving.

I like to schedule in my Google calendar blocks of time to learning and building skills and I color code them according to the subject matter.  I count each 30-minute period of learning or practicing as a “win” in my Count My Wins program I created for myself.  This program gives me a natural high from the happy chemicals released when I finish each 30-minute self-development session. I’m a very curious person so I push myself even in areas I’m unfamiliar with.  I really want to become a better person mentally, spiritually, and physically.

Have fun in your self-development!  Crush it!

3 of my daily practices: growth mindset, mindfulness, and gratitude.

(I took a picture of these plants and trees in Waikele, Hawaii on March 12, 2019. They represent growth in our growth mindset practice. I’m always mindful of the beauty around me. I’m grateful to experience such simple pleasures.)

Fade Out or Keep Going?

Fade out or keep going? What are we chasing after in this competitive and sometimes cruel world? Money? Power? Fame? When you reach it, you get attacked by others and punished more severely. Is it worth it? I think most of us want to be happy and at peace. There’s something beautiful in fading out from the craziness of society to be with your own soul in a peaceful and quiet life. Maybe live a simple life near the ocean or up in the mountains. It sounds so nice to meditate, read, research, write, create art, produce content that helps others, build a service for others using technology, and only hang out with those who lift your spirit. I’m not saying to completely cut ourselves off from the world. We could still continue our hustle to create value for others from afar, only coming back to society for our loved ones and for our most passionate projects. Do you feel this sometimes? If this was possible would you try it?

This is a picture of the sunset in Waikele, Hawaii on 2/19/19.

Gratitude & Maximize Tools for Our Self-development!!!

I’m grateful for all those who create value for us, especially the tools we use in our self-development! I often post about my gratitude for my @apple Macbook Pro because it’s my biggest tool I use to learn and produce value for others. Here, @asics shoes, specifically the Asics Kayano running shoes plays a huge role in my health since this is my go to shoes for running, walking, and casual wear. I already wore them for the 2019 Great Aloha Run @greataloharun !They’re supportive, light, and very comfortable! I also love the design and colors, which plays a role in lifting my spirit! 🥇 👟

Get products that are not only practical but visually and spiritually uplifting! That way we’re productive and mentally lifted!!! 🥇

These are 2 of my daily practices: gratitude and maximize tools for our self-development!!! Attack your vision and dreams my friends!!! With Warmest Aloha,
Jon

We’ll Rewrite the Pain We Know

Remove me from this world.

They can destroy themselves.

Let me sail away on a wave of music.

Her gentle voice calls me.

She says, “Here’s where we begin.”

“We’ll rewrite the pain we know.”

Sending Love to Those Who Compare, Complain, & Hate.

I ran my 11th Great Aloha Run, an 8.15 mile race from Aloha Tower to Aloha Stadium! It felt nice to get out in the sun & run, one of my practices to lower my anxiety, stress, & any low feelings.

I recently lost my aunty, a really sweet & kind person. I’m still in shock & grieving. Her passing has hit me really hard.

Today, I got blasted by a blogger for my efforts on an aviation business project I’ve been working on w/ my business partners since 2015. It really hurts. My business partners & I have been working tirelessly w/ no pay for about 3.5 years. I’ve never been so poor in my life. For those business people who told me they lost or almost lost their home because of their sacrifice to build a service or product, I totally understand. There have been times where I’ve cried by myself, wondering why I put myself through such struggle. Yet my business partners & I keep working despite the pain because we have so much passion in what we do & believe in the potential it will provide for the community. The critics should try putting themselves out there & risk their money & time on business, politics, & the arts. Maybe they would feel empathetic for those who put their heart & soul on a value for others to use or enjoy. I don’t understand how humans can be so cold as to try & damage others & even desire suffering onto others. I invite my critics to spend a week with me as I draft documents, meet w/ community leaders, write fiction & nonfiction, read books & laws, create branding content for a restaurant, volunteer for a nonprofit, meditate, do my gratitude prayers, play with my little nieces & 2nd cousins, go through anxiety on my business projects, & face the deaths of people I love. Maybe then, they will see me. I hope by the end of that week, they can feel that I care for them to find happiness within themselves. Creating & working with others is much more upbeat & positive than always comparing, complaining, & hating. Heck, there is nothing positive w/ comparing, complaining, & hating. I wish these people love & happiness.

Pain is my Power

Kick my broken bones.

When they heal, I will return.

Pain is my power.

– Jon Riki Karamatsu, Haiku Poem No. 216, 12/31/2018 –

When you get taken down, take that negative energy to power your comeback. Rebuild, have empathy for your opposition, and keep providing value for others. Positivity will always rise.

2018 Sinaitenians of Oahu Christmas Party

I had a great time with my friend Allen Yadao and his family at a Christmas Party for the Sinaitenians of Oahu at the Airport Honolulu Hotel. I gave a short message on what Christmas means to me. I told the audience, “The positive energy we are all sharing tonight in this room is what Christmas means to me. To share our love, and laugh. I hadn’t laughed this much in a while, like how I’m laughing all night with my buddy (I pointed to Allen). It feels so good!” I enjoyed greeting and taking pictures with everyone. That was special a night!

[I forgot to post this in December 2018!]

Sunset with my niece and mom in San Diego, California

My mom, niece, and I at our Airbnb in San Diego, California on 10/16/2018. We are enveloped by the warm glow of the sunset.

Having some sunlight a day helps us produce Vitamin D, which assists us in having strong bones and prevents cancer. It also helps us better our mood, combatting depression since studies have shown a correlation with Vitamin D deficiency and depression. Just don’t overdo it, which can harm your skin.

So enjoy some time in the sun to get Vitamin D. I enjoy going to the beach to swim and watching sunsets. Take care.

With Warmest Aloha,
Jon

Inside You’re Crying

Holding another.

Secure your nets, flaunt your wins.

Inside you’re crying.

– Jon Riki Karamatsu, Haiku Poem #202, 11/23/2018 –

Everything is not always as it seems. Especially in this time of widespread use of social media. It’s okay to be vulnerable. I feel you.

Spend Time With Your Loved Ones

Personally, I believe in spending fun time with our loved ones. When I was a politician, my calendar was extremely packed with events. As a result, I missed out on some gatherings with my family. Now, I put way more effort to spend time with those who will always be there for me in good times and bad. In our career, people are often around us because they want something for their cause, career, business, or personal lives, which is natural. I’m just saying when you’re down in the gutter, sad, financially broke, sick, or dying, who will be there to comfort you, even help to pick you up? Those few people will be your loved ones. Go and enjoy things with them!

Here, my 3-year-old niece is petting a goat at the San Diego Zoo on October 17, 2018. Cute stuff!

Inbetween your hustle for your dreams, have fun with your loved ones my friends!

With Warmest Aloha,
Jon

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving! I have so much gratitude for my family. Their love and support has a huge impact on me. I’m able to keep moving forward because of them. Here’s a picture of my family at MW on 11/16/2018 for my mom’s birthday and Legoland and California in October 2018.

I’m extremely thankful for the opportunity to be alive. The odds of each of us being born is about 1 in 400 trillion. We’re super lucky to have a shot at life!

Wishing more happiness and peace in your life!

With Warmest Aloha,
Jon

San Diego Zoo

My niece and I riding the open-air bus at San Diego Zoo on 10/17/2018 in San Diego, California. My brother-in-law is behind us, my niece’s dad.

For me, I do my best to spend as much time as I can with my family. My nieces changed everything drastically because time is clearly reflected by how fast they grow up, just like my hair. 😂

Have fun with you family and friends!

With Warmest Aloha,
Jon
